Ted Haggard and "Focus on the Family"

This one tickled me today.... Ted Haggard, former evangelical leader, is going to be involved in an immersion recovery program through the Colorado Springs christian evangelical group, Focus on the Family.

The VP of Focus on the Family left this wonderful morsel in an interview regarding the "recovery" program Haggard will be going through:

""I see success approximately 50 percent of the time," said H.B. London, vice president for church and clergy at Focus on the Family, the conservative Christian ministry in Colorado Springs. "Guys just wear out and they can no longer subject themselves to the process."
Those who fail "end up selling cars or shoes or something, and being miserable and angry the rest of their lives," London said."

What a gem, and what a wonderful feeling that those of us involved in the business of selling something other than, I guess, Jesus, can have about how the right feels about normal citizens, engaged in normal jobs.

I hear ya.
This guy is a real piece of shit.  Years of bashing gays and bashing drug users in the name of the lord, and now it turns out he likes to hire gay prostitutes and smoke meth while getting it in the ass.
Now, lemme guess, all he has to do is repent?

This gacked out tubesteak smuggler should be executed.......in the name of the lord.  He should be executed for lying and cheating in the name of the lord.

Lying and cheating is not an executable offense, but lying and cheating in the name of the lord should be.  Look at this subhuman!!  This guy became a millionaire due to his hatred of gays, and he used that money to pay one or more male prostitutes for gay sex.

It doesnt get more ironic than that.  You think this guy was praying while he was tweeked out, bent over the hotel room sink taking it up the ass?

The problem with that idea for me is that this guy was one of the nation's leading evangelical leaders -- spending a lot of time influencing our elected officials to waste their time on non-issues like gay marriage. Poseurs such as this guy, with their petty and neurotic paranoia about gays and abortion distracted too much attention in our country from that which we should truly be worried about.

You're right, the anger should be directed at the elected officials who cowtowed to twisted idiots such as this one.

True, Bro, and good point.  I made an effort to vote on all of my local officials and state measures.
I disagree, though, that this person (or way of life) is not worth my anger.  This is one of the leaders that has been preaching (no pun intended) a certain way of life.  This person, this leader, is a complete false, a fraud.  This leader specifically and intentionally broke at least 5 of the 10 'rules' for living.  This person degraded gay people and said hurtful things about them, however, it turns out this guy not only likes gay sex, he first smokes meth with his prostitute gay sex partner so that he can get his ass pounded for an extra long time.

Thats fucked up, and it pisses me off that so many people hide behind god and use god.  I dont even believe in god and it pisses me off.  I cant imagine how someone would feel if they were religious.

hypocrisy is mighty distasteful coming from the high and mighty.
Just like the Catholic Priest abuse stories.

Did they forget the CHristian lesson of humility?

hell yes.

...that's why I can't take things on faith anymore.

"The Rev. Ted Haggard has been fired amid allegations of gay sex and drug use, but the evangelical leader can still be seen at the height of his powers _ preaching to thousands and condemning homosexuality _ in the documentary "Jesus Camp."

In one scene of the film, which follows a group of children as they develop evangelical Christian beliefs, directors Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady visit Haggard's 14,000-member New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colo. He tells the vast audience, "We don't have to debate about what we should think about homosexual activity. It's written in the Bible."

Then Haggard looks into the camera and says kiddingly: "I think I know what you did last night," drawing laughs from the crowd. "If you send me a thousand dollars, I won't tell your wife."

Later, another joke for the filmmakers: "If you use any of this, I'll sue you." "

London offers a ready made excuse for him already.  I wonder if his "recovery" program involves advising Haggard to either preach the virtues of forgiveness to his following for his own gain now or end up a shoe salesman.     Wink

Oh trust me, this guy is one of the biggest pieces of shit walking on two legs.  But he doesn't affect my life at all, all those guys (tv evangelists) are frauds and you will never see any of them in heaven.  Nowhere in the Bible does it say "become wealthy by preaching the gospel".  But the hypocrasy, lying, cheating and stealing that happens everyday to taxpayers goes unnoticed by so many people, but this chump gets the spot light to deflect attention from those who are really hurting our country on so many different levels.

And don't forget Jimmy Swaggard. He tried to "save" his cousin (Jerry Lee Lewis) while quietly sinning to beat the band. When he got caught (and he had worse taste than Bill Clinton) he went on national TV and cried to be forgiven. Guess he got forgave cause he was still brining in the money and preaching the gosple the last time I heard.

And I loved the "air-conditioned" dog house that Jimmy and Tammy had for their pooch. My dogs have been bugging me for one ever since they heard about that.  Smiley

there's no joy here dude. i'm disgusted by the hypocrisy.

as my initial post was stating, that those of his ilk then go on to degrade normal guys who sell shoes and cars as a place where those who are fallen from grace end up. hubris and hypocrisy. its disgusting and sadly whatever abuse they take in the process is deserved (and probably less than they deserve).

Scott,

You should read your post... it comes across as very anti-gay... There are better ways to express your anger at that jerk.  I find your post offensive, and I am a straight married man.  Sorry, this is not to start a fight, but please read your post and see if you can see what I'm saying.

No, I can't see what you are saying. Each of my posts on this thread have attempted to point out the hypocrisy of people like Ted Haggard and other evangelicals who attempt to sell homophobia as another way to fill the coffers and the pews.

I have several close friends that are gay. Folks like Haggard and others who denigrate gays, and the religious right with their indignation toward gays, disgust me and offend me and those relationships I have with those friends. Which I believe I have repeated now in three other posts on this thread. Whatever others have posted regarding specific homosexual acts I have not responded to, nor do I intend to.

Maybe you can read my post and help me understand which part you misinterpreted, because I can tell you I am about farthest you can be from being anti-gay, here on this thread or anywhere else.

(unless you missed the glaring sarcastic nature of my first post.....)

You bet.

These are the bottom feeders that have turned my old GOP into the bizarre mess that it is. These so-called evangelicals are all over the place blowing out FM stations, snooping in our windows and generally making life miserable for most of us. They are anti-science and against anything that might feel good.

Since someone got caught, I'm delighted that it turns out to be one of these Jesus-Jolly Bible thumping, larcenous "preachers" that would have us believe that The Flintstones is a documentary because they ride around on dinosaurs. It's a delight for someone like me.

All these guys hide out in "rehabs" somewhere blaming booze and others for behaving like pigs.

They are horrible people.

Believe what you like but leave the rest of us alone.
