Railroad Ranch/Harriman State Park--Pics

'Evening,

Elizabeth just got back from Harriman State Park (Railroad Ranch) in eastern Idaho, after her company completed their contract to catalog artifacts in the cabins there.  Some of you may remember that this property was donated to the state by the Averill and Roland Harriman families.  Averill Harriman was once governor of New York State.

The ranch is just west of the Yellowstone country, on the Henry's Fork of the Snake River, and is one of the most celebrated fly-fishing destinations in the world.

EJ took some pics, so I thought I'd post a few so you folks could get a peek at this magnificent country:

Railroad Ranch buildings, looking north toward Mt. Jefferson and Sawtelle Peak.

A view of the Railroad Ranch from the Harriman compound.

Two views of the Henry’s Fork of the Snake River at Railroad Ranch.  They aren’t easily seen here, but the river is crowded with trumpeter swans.

Best wishes,

George

Ah! The foreigners put on such airs
Wearing the tangerine suits
And their harlequin eyes.
The pain they inspire
Draws in harmonica melodies
And the feathers of birds
Which flame up at their touch.
It all comes to light in the sheer
Debonair.

Well, Tammy--you could put one up in Island Park, or somewhere between Last Chance and West Yellowstone, but I hope you like winter.  It's harsh country up there.  The mid-winter temps in West Yellowstone can get down to -60 Fahrenheit.

On the other hand, if you like sandhill cranes, the flats below Henry's Lake are one of the great breeding grounds for this species in the spring.  Makes up for the winter a little bit.   Smiley

I love it there.

Best,
