I've put up with the ex hubbies shit for years. I've let him get away with alot of BS that had I'd have taken to court had I the funds. But tonight takes the cake!
I've never in my life heard of a parent, after 12 years of divorce, threatening to punish their children for...get this...trick or treating.
I just talke to him on the phone, and he claims he "doesn't remember" ever threatening this. His statement was..."..once it was determined they would be with you the issue was dropped." Well maybe for him, but he failed to inform the Kids.
I reitterated that though we are divorced for 12 years now, that he has no authority over what I decide the kids will and won't do while they spend time with me.
I'd much rather they are out trick or treating with their friends, than out vandalizing property or getting into other various trouble.
After this phone conversation I talked to the kids once again. I asked if they truely believed Dad would withhold a months allowance if he found out they went trick or treating? Megan said difinatively that he said that word for word.
To threaten to punish them for something they do while with me, is unlawful, and the true sign of a control freak. I'm so glad I'm out of that. Too bad these great kids are still exposed to him.

They are "older" I'll agree to that. But there is nothing going on in our area for kids this age to do. I'd rather they are with me, and going door to door, than sneeking out and toilet papering houses while I'm off with my adult friends getting plastered at some mascarade party. I work with his girlfriends Aunt. I have a bit of inside info.
It's rediculous.

You handled it wrong, hon. Be it they are "older", the story shoulda been they were gonna help supervise the other "younger" tots....to help out the other parents in the neighborhood.

You have a very valid point. However, he'd never have believed that even if it were true. Hell, we got a letter from the White House this week about Meg being considered for the National Honor Roll Society, and he's calling it a scam.
She's runing a 3.87 GPA for goodness sake. As a freshman. She's been in student counsel for 4 years. This year she is treasurer. She also writes a news column for the monthly publication of a teen newspaper that my company publishes. He's a paranoid control freak. His girlfriend has filled Megan's mind with ideas that she is fat and unattactive. They have steadily instilled an eating disorder in Dylan where he wakes and raids the pantry in the wee hours of the night. (called night eating syndrom) they "ration" food over there. Almost to a military standard. Its sick.

So best you dont show him its upsetting you , just go out with the kids and enjoy Halloween. I wish we have Halloween here in Australia, it would be the perfect excuse for me to ditch my serious work outfits to get into something more comfortable like a pumpkin patch and walk the neighbourhood with my boys.
The children are with you, enjoy them and ignore him. He maybe punishing them for doing what kids do best : have fun! So you will just reward them double : let them have ALL the fun they can handle

I don't know if staying calm helps out with the ex-hubby, but it should help you when you deal with him.
(I use that tactics with my family this very moment.)
I'd say that if 14 and 16 are too old, your kids would know that themselves!
i've heard parents tell their kids that they will not get their allowance, but never over something that ridiculous. I hope that everything works out fine in the end.

Well it doesn't really matter what we all think of him (and personally I think "prick is much too high a life form) what MATTERS is how he is making his kids look at him.
The impression he is giving kids of how husbands and fathers behave.
The feelings of worthlessness and rage that he is inspiring.
What a truly considered approach from a caring human being - not.
Pegg, the important thing here isn't trick or treating, or allowances or any of that stuff.. it is making sure your kids see all male role models aren't utter fucking scumbags like their dad. (And I won't apologise to anyone for swearing because my feelings here warrant it!)
There are far more good men out there than bad ones, make sure they both know that!
