go into this bathroom alone? "The Metropolitan Transportation Authority agreed to allow riders to use MTA rest rooms "consistent with their gender expression," the Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund announced yesterday." http://www.nydailynews.com/news/story/464637p-390955c.html

That was the hardest part of being a single parent. When my daughter was still in her single digits I never let her go into a bathroom alone.

First off, get the terminology correct here. Transvestite/Cross-dressing is the act of wearing clothing commonly associated with another gender within a particular society. Transgender/transsexual is the state of one's "gender identity" (self-identification as male, female, both or neither) not matching one's "assigned gender" (identification by others as male or female based on physical/genetic sex). Now, for the kicker here. For a transsexual to be considered for gender reassignment surgery, they must live as the sex they wish to become for one year. That aside, can anyone provide any statistics on relating transgendered people to child molestation or rape?

| Just asking questions - its hard to separate out the concern for kids with the ridicule of people with gender issues that are unrealated to molestation. Seems the real problem is with letting a kid alone in a private space where others can corner them. Who's gonna stand at the bathroom door and do the genital check for people undergoing gender reassignment, or women like my Aunt Bertha, who is sometimes mistakenly assumed to be a man?

| Let me ask a question of all the parents out there - you have a kid of the opposite gender. You are at some public place that is semi-deserted (mall, park, wherever) and the kid needs to go really bad. Do you let your kid (lets say they are 12 years old) go into a bathroom unacompanied? Not knowing who might be in there? That's a routine occurence based on the way the rules and the architecture are set up. But dads who have daughters and moms that have sons cant walk into the restroom with their kid. So they send them in alone. The only meaningful question is whether we want to abolish our current system and make everything airplane/portapotty style. People would still get a cubicle for privacy, and that privacy would be less likely to be invaded and abused. It would be easier for parents to keep a real eye on their kids. But this discussion isn't really about improving safety, is it?

And what about the far bigger danger - when mom is out with her kids, and little Johnny, who is to old to go into the ladies room with mom, gets sent into the men's room alone. Are you telling me you would rather have the characters pictured on this page left alone with little boys than have them in the ladies room? But this discussion isn't really about improving safety, is it? |
| Kind of an expensive way to occomodate...what 0.001% of the population. Just make all bathrooms unisex. Problem solved. My problem with this law dosn't lie with transgender/transsexuals, it lies with the predators that would make use of this law to further their ways. -P.

Yeah, well I guess 'unisex' is what I was suggesting - but there are alot of people out there that are vehemently opposed to the immoral concept of a unisex bathroom, though they would accept something that was like an airplane or portapotty. And I wasn't suggesting it for the sake of the 0.00001% or whatever it is that Jonny has his pants twisted up about - more like a general concern for parents sending their kids in alone. And it goes beyond potential molesters - when mom has to send junior into the men's room, there could be other hazards - bacteriological, broken glass, whatever. A unisex would be safer for kids in that respect, as well.

| You need another hair-cut, bro. Good thing you've been living in a liberal place like Mass for the past decade - not some Taliban place like Alabamastan, where everybody "knows" that there is something wrong with men who have long hair.
