Anyone out here know anything about cars?

I have a backwords issue with my car and not sure what it could be. Any help would be nice.  I just put a new battery in it 2 days ago because it was dead and now it will start fine in the am when I go to work but after I get to work if I try to start it right away it will barely turn over and not start. If I give it like 3 hours and try to start it again then it starts fine. What the heck!!! I have someone looking at it this weekend would like to have an idea before than what to expect.  Undecided

Start your car and pull the positive side battery cable off the battery to see if your alternator needs replaced If it stays running it is something else. If it dies replace the alternator.

I am fairly knowledgable about cars. If I do that and my car dies then it would be the alternator then right?   Huh

You could just be overloading the alternator too. I've done that. Sitting in traffic with the heater going full blast, lights and windscreen wipers on and stereo belting out full blast!
You need to be making the alternator work and if you are only doing short journeys with everything else running then the alternator won't recharge the battery hence it being flat. I'd take it for a couple of good long runs (if you aren't) and if its still doing that then its likely to be a wafty alternator.
Hope that helps!

WOW thank you guys. Yah it almost seems the longer it runs the better chance of it not starting again. I appreciate all of the help.  Roll Eyes

Also check for loose or dirty battery cable terminals. I have see people install batteries and leave the cables loose.......heat from the engine causes the terminals to expand just enough to cause problems.

I will say that more than likely it's the alternator, but checking and cleaning cable ends is free and something to check as it could eliminate the problem.

Honestly it could be what Bill said, however if the alternator voltage checks out ok, my guess is it could be a bad armature or field coil, and that means a new starter. Without looking at it, we're all just guessing aubmari, thats why I asked you what color it was, but you didn't bite Grin

I am thrilled to pieces that Bill and the other  gear-heads in the group replied to this for Aub........coz my answer would have been.......

Nope, not a clue!!!. I know where the key goes and where to put the gas. I can add air to my tires and I can use the power adjust to make my set comfie in my seat-IF ya get my drift! Past that, well, I think that's why I married. Car stuff is on his side of the Honey-do list.  Roll Eyes

Hope it's a simple fix!!!

Have you checked to see if you are missing any belts or if any of the belts are noticeably loose (make sure car is not running when you check)?  Could be that you threw a belt or it is loose and the alternator is not able to recharge the battery.  If your battery cable terminals are corroded (covered in a greenish-white looking crust) you can pour some coca-cola over them to clean them then make sure they are tight against the posts on the battery.  Also, check your owners manual for the diagram of your fuse box.  Check to see if the fuse for your alternator has blown.

Words of advice.  If you have to take your car to a garage have a male friend go with you...sad, but true, a woman with little to no car knowledge is "easy pickin's" for unscrupulous mechanics/shops.  Call a couple of auto parts stores ahead of time and find out the price of an alternator and a belt for your specific make and model of car.  If the garage says you have a bad alternator and it needs to be replaced, tell them ahead of time that you want to keep your old parts.  Take the old alternator to somewhere like Auto Zone or any other parts store and they will test it for free.  The shop will tell you they will have to charge you a core charge if you keep your old parts...tell them you will bring it back after you have had it tested...sometimes that in itself will be a deterrent to keep them from ripping you off.   Some shops will also tell you that you need a new belt for your alternator.  Check your belts before you go in there and as long as they are not cracked, you really don't need one.  I have seen them go as far as cutting the belts just so they can increase the price of their parts/labor.

If you decide to test your car by removing the positive (+/red) battery cable, be careful to only remove the positve one.  Removing the negative cable first can cause a power surge and you may end up replacing your car's computer as well.

Hope this helps.

If you do that, you will need an alternator anyway, because that proceedure will kill the alternator.

Knowing what kind of car you have would be a big help also.  Wink  All cars symptoms are not indicative of the same problem.

I grew up around a garage and I've never fried one. Call the auto part store and ask how to check the altenator and they will tell you the same. Once the car is started the voltage going back to the battery recharges the battery, it is only 12V. Maybe if you arc it against the body......but otherwise it won't hurt the car.

Not to sound too high and mighty, but this is what I do for a living, and no way would I take advice from some parts jockey making 7.50 an hour on how to diagnose my car.  Modern cars 1994 and newer are complex machines, many problems can result from using standard "tried and true" methods to diagnose them.  I've seen it.  Take for instance an E-30 series BMW, it the ignition coil fails due to high resistance it takes out the main ecu, every time, installing an inferior replacement coil can have the same effect.  I just want to know what kind of car we are talking about before I will even decide if I am qualified to give any advice.  But I have yet to see what kind of car we are talking about.

Good enough for me Thomas........most of what I have owned and worked on has been American cars and older models, with the electronics in them nowadays it would probably be safest to hook it up to a computer at the dealership or trusted mechanic.....Take Thomas's advice.

Or she could just let me know what kind of car it is.  But if you are taking it to "some one", make sure it isn't a franchise shop ie, Midas, Pep Boys, Firestone, Goodyear, Tires Plus etc.
