Know your neighborhood

Halloween is coming soon and trick or treating is a must for our young un's.  Know who's door you will be knocking on this year.  The local news stations here suggested that we check out the National Registry for Sex Offenders before venturing out for a night of Halloween fun...thought it important enough to pass on along to all of you.

I just checked this database and found not one but 7 sexual offenders living within a one mile radius of my home.  ALL of the offenders crimes were those against children.  One of them is within 1/10th of a mile on the same street where I live.  How scary is that?

I hope your results aren't as startling as mine were.

Its so sad our kids are not safe!

Do like we do!

Start a new Halloween tradition like we do.

The Great Pumpkin comes alive ! Like Charlie Browns.
What we do is let JD dress up along with the rest of the family and we bake cookies, and watch semi-scary movies, in hopes the Great Pumpkin will visit us. In JD's mind, he visits all the good little goblins.

Deveny makes treasure maps and leaves throughout the house. It ends at the computer where there is a power point presentation from the great pumpkin, telling him what he needs to work on through out the year and proud he is of him. Then he gives him a final map where the treasure is located, he finds candy and a toy or two.
He loves it and looks forward to it. He knows other kids go trick or treating but he loves this. You should see the other kids when JD tells them about it ! They think thats cool.

My neighbors are safe,

So far none of the 50 deer, 5 coyotes or the 2 bears are on the list.

I do have a strange neighbor up the road but way too far to walk.

Guess living in the woods isn't all bad.

If your kids go trick or treating, go along with them--costumed or not.  It's not difficult, it's fun, and you can make sure your kids stay safe.

Somehow a six-foot-tall black-robed figure dressed as the Grim Reaper has a dampening effect on weird adults who may answer the door.....

Killing is too good for the sickass fucks!
I say stick em in a vat of acid from the waist down. And LEAVE them there.

At my old apartment, my buddy Phil wanted me to look on the IL sex offenders list, to see if any were near us (he was worried about leaving his wife on long business trips). They are fucking everywhere here, and the guy who had just moved in next to me... was on the list.
My niece was 14 at the time and liked to pop on my unnanounced without her mom knowing, and I told her not to come by my apartment ever again, unless her dad was dropping her off and I could meet her at the door.

You're better off just buying your kids a bunch of candy and having a small get-together with friends hallowe'en party. It's safer.

Peace, and parents don't forget to inspect your kids candy after they do trick or treat to make sure no 'tricks' are involved.

Peace,
Carl

Checking the neighborhood for sex offenders, namely child molesters is a good idea. I did that , and have a few that live within a FEW blocks of me. In fact, there are two who live in the next block down, RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET FROM EACH OTHER!! Jesus!

I don't have any children, but if you hadn't brought that up, DD, I wouldn't have even thought about it. Very good idea, it's always best to be safe. Too bad we can't mark their property somehow, but I suppose that would violate their rights. Yeah, right.

Be careful of the sex offenders of other crimes. There is a serial rapist living nearby, and he has bragged of raping over 100 women around the US. He stalks women, and the two houses that are across the street from his have been bought and sold about 8 times each over the last 13 years. They were owned by women. He knows exactly what he can do, and what the cops can't do to him. He's never outdoors without a hat and sunglasses on, lives with his mother, and doesn't work. He's been in prison for his crimes. I wouldn't go near his house if you paid me.

Excellent point, DD.

Well, this year Caleb decided Granny needed to be a clown, so the clown and Red Power Ranger will go T or Ting together and Granny "watches" where we go and who we take candy from.

One other thing we do -- we don't give candy, but some halloween stuff - like crayons or rings or some other junk like that. People have candy at home and that way they don't have to worry about the candy being tainted.

My son's neighborhood all turn out for Halloween. One guy gets a hay wagon put together and the kids get to go on a hayride. Everyone gets their lawn chairs and sit outside (some with spooky costumes on) and it's a lot of fun. BUT everyone knows everyone - that's the secret. If the parent turns his/her back - someone is WATCHING the kid. AND we don't go out of the neighborhood. (Oh and someone ALWAYS "rolls" Mr. Clean's yard. Larry has come to expect it and just laughs - the kids love to do it after he threatens them.)

It's a shame we have to be so careful of fun things, but that's just how the world is today.

And Jonny I'm with you -- Hang 'em HIGH and TODAY!

Hugs BD

Never thought about this one. My sixth grade teacher did time for it but he hasn't been heard from in 40 years. Probably changed his name to Karr...

Anyway, I'm probably considered the weirdest on the block....old bachelor living alone chatting with psycho pain freaks on line.  Shocked

I'll be out in the pumpkin patch waiting for the Great Pumpkin to rise up out of the pumpkin patch and bring toys to all us little children..... I'm into it. My favorite.

I've checked this website before, through other sources - it's public information - no law suits can be filed, unless you do something stupid, like put the sign in the guy's yard (although, for halloween - I think that should be made a law, just to keep the kids safe!).

Ive got two, both about 1/2 mile away from my house.  But, I live on a very short street, in a very small neighborhood (7 whole houses), and have a State Bureau Investigation agent living across the street  Grin  Doubt seriously if any perv is gonna move in my neighborhood.

What a pitiful world we live in that we even have to look up what sex offenders  might be in the neighborhood, or distrust what neighbors give us because it might be poisoned or have a razor blade in it...before our kids can go out and have a good time on halloween.

...and many other links.  Google "poisoned halloween candy urban legend" and take a look.

The poisoned/adulterated Halloween candy story is essentially an urban myth that dates to the mid-1950's.  There are few if any actual cases of Halloween candy tampered with by strangers.

Not a flame, Linda.  I believed this one for a long time myself, until I read about it on snopes.com .

We have plenty of legitimate worries for our children, though.

They actually have a proposition on Californias' ballot this year requiring sex offenders to wear GPS monitoring stuff (like they would comply Roll Eyes) and disallowing them from living near schools and parks (like they can't move about).  Looked up on our local Megans' Law website and there are 25!! sex offenders in a two mile radius around our place and in that same area there are four schools.
Think I'm going to have a small party here for a few of Mikeys' friends....and I'll give out spider rings or pencils.
If he fights it and must T or T-I will be with him-dressed as a ninja-with a friggin sword.

My youngest son has just turned sixteen and has lost total interest in Halloween now, so I dont have to worry about it now.

No doubt, he will be tucked away in his room, cos at sixteen, he doesnt actually communicate with us, watching some smut or voilence through his p.c.

Oh God, bring back the little ones.  Its easier to walk the street on Halloween with them.....

I just printed the pictures and addresses of every single "registered" child molester within a 1 mile radius of our apartment-friggin ran out of ink in my printer!-
I suppose it would be illegal for me to post these pictures along the streets these monsters live on?
I will be showing all the kids in our neighborhood and warning them not to go near those addresses- or just come to our house-or if we MUST-they can all walk with me (mutant ninja mom)

I have a few living near me as well, it is very sad that kids today can’t have the freedom we or at least my age group had when we where little. I remember running all over probably a ten block radius on Halloween with just my friends no parents and the only kind of stuff my mom was concerned about was home made goodies, we through those away but man what a hall we made.
We take our kids to my in-laws street, my wife still knows almost everyone on the street, old aria and not to many have left so we feel safe taking the kids there but we still wont let them run around with out us right behind them to make sure they are safe.

You know, you have to consider that a lot of this is because we pay attention to kids today. In the good old days, we didn't and in the really old days, the kids were blamed and perhaps just warned to stay away from the weird old man.

Also:

It was almost okay to hammer the wife and kids after working and getting hammered in your own way on the way home.

Don't tell Nancy Grace about this or it would ruin her day.
