I have a simple question.....

Quote Quote Modify Modify

This is mainly an American question, but I would love to hear from folks in other countries on this.....and maybe even how this works there.

Its a simple yes or no question, there should be NO room for discusion!

Here it is: If you vote in an election should you have to show a photo ID to prove you are a citizen?

Thats it....simple!

This should be interesting....what say you?

It is up to YOU to educate yourself and then help your doctor plan your treatment. If you just sit down in front of your doctor and say "make me better" you are setting yourself up for a great deal of pain.

Well, this is a very difficult question (not really).  Although I could answer in 1 word, I choose to be a thorn in Jonny's paw and take up a whole paragrtaph going into the question.  Is there really any doubt the answer is yes.  Any citizen can get a state issued photo ID and you SHOULD need to have it to vote.

When you register at Town Hall don't you need to show one? I forget if they did that or not.

I know when I show up at my precinct to vote they just ask me my address. They have the rest of the info on hand.

My answer to the original question would obviously be yes.

In Mass all you need is a utility bill with anyones name and address on it that lives in the state.

In Oregon, they used to accept a utility bill or a rental agreement, but just stopped this year in 2006.
You can get blank rental agreements at Office Max for christ sake.

Everytime I have voted, I had to show valid ID first. Not sure why Mass doesn't do the same thing. You would think that it would be a universal procedure and shouldn't vary from state to state.

I know this is an American question but what the heck - one year for some reason, I got left off our voting list.  When I went to vote, I had to fill out a bloody ream of paper work and show two pieces of ID - one of which had to be photo.

I believe no matter where you live, you must be a citizen of that country to vote and should have to show some proof.

Sorry Jonny for the length of the response - short answer YES!

Jonny I don't think the clerk at town hall where you register would do that, I could be wrong though.

What your telling me is if I go to any poll in your town with your utility bill, that I pulled out of your trash barrel while looking for cans, I could use it to go vote? How can that be? You got a link?

We're gonna have to change that if thats the truth.

In Switzerland you do not need a photo ID to vote in an election nor in a referendum.
should you have to show a photo ID to prove you are a citizen? only for Switzerland.... NO!!!!
by the way in Israel you do have to  show a photo ID to prove you are elagebel to vote.

Yes, I think a government photo ID like a Driver's License is a must to register and vote.  Try getting on a plane without one and watch what happens.
IP Logged

You love lots of things if you live around them. But there isn't any woman and there isn't any horse, not any before nor after, that’s as lovely as a great airplane. Man has one virginity to lose in fighters, and if it is a lovely airplane he loses it to, there is where his heart will forever be.
