Aircraft crashes into New York building POSTED: 3:02 p.m. EDT, October 11, 2006 NEW YORK (AP) -- Police say an aircraft has crashed into a building on Manhattan's Upper East Side at 72nd Street and York Avenue. It is near Rockefeller Center. There was no word on casualties. Video from the scene shows at least three apartments in the high rise fully engulfed in flames. It's unclear if it was a small plane or a helicopter.

OMG...I hope that is nowhere near my brother.... I don't know the address of his new work building and I can't recall off the top of my head the new address of his new apartment either. Gotta call the parents in a bit and make sure...

Hope it was just mechanical failure and the pilot had no other option.

I called Pepper's work. She works on 57th St. I think. They can see it from their building but they are not that close and they are fine.

OK Just got off the phone with my brother. I hadn't had the main news channels on when this story started, so Jimi's post was the first I learned of it. I called my mom at work and she said that she had heard, but neither she nor my dad had gotten through to my brother yet. I had called and left a message, and so my mom told me to keep trying. She didn't think he was near it, though. This is at 72nd and York as posted. My brother works at 47th and 3rd and lives at 48th between 2nd and 3rd. He said it's not really near to Rockefellar Center, though, for those who heard it was near there. Rockefellar Center is near 45th street. This incident has happened closer to the river in the Upper East Side... My aunts are also not in that area. My brother just said he doesn't know anybody who lives near there...someone at 89th and York, but far enough away. I'm so glad...we have so many family and close friends there. And friends who died in the WTC. This shit is scary, even if it isn't terrorist..... The news here just said that the people who live there are likely at work in the middle of the afternoon on a Wednesday. I hope that is the case and that nobody died in the condos. I'm just so glad my brother and aunts are okay........ Wow my heart rate went through the roof when I heard about this.... So relieved... Glad to hear Pep is okay, too. What about Langa? I know Ex2 is out on Long Island..b.ut does he work on Long Island, too? Who else is in NYC? -Carrie

Small Aircraft Hits Manhattan Building Oct 11, 3:45 PM (ET) By COLEEN LONG (AP) This image from television shows fire and smoke after a small plane crashed into a high-rise on... Full Image NEW YORK (AP) - A small plane crashed into a high-rise on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, raining down debris on the neighborhood and shooting giant flames out the windows, police said. Christine Monaco, a New York spokeswoman for FBI, said there was no indication of terrorism in the crash, but that officials "have been sent to the scene as a routine." FAA spokesman Jim Peters said all three New York City-area airports are operating normally. "The initial indication is that there is a terrible accident," said Department of Homeland Security spokesman Russ Knocke. The aircraft struck the 20th floor of a building on East 72nd Street, said Fire Department spokeswoman Emily Rahimi. Witnesses said the crash caused a loud noise, and flames were seen shooting out of the windows. "It's a mob scene with police and helicopters circling," said Sandy Teller, watching from his apartment a block away. "There's a dozen ambulances and lots of firemen waiting on 72nd, on the corner. There's lots of stretchers ready, gurneys. And lots of emergency people waiting." The crash struck fear in a city devastated by the attacks of Sept. 11 five years ago. Witnesses said sirens echoed across the east side of Manhattan as emergency workers rushed to the scene. The crash triggered a loud bang. Broken glass and debris was strewn around the neighborhood. "There's a sense of helpnessness," Teller said. "Cots and gurneys, waiting. It's a mess." The Federal Aviation Administration said it was too early to determine what type of aircraft was involved, or what might have caused the crash in the middle of a hazy October afternoon. Witness Sarah Steiner, who lives one block away, told CNN that "The fire was raging out of two windows on approximately the 30th floor. ... They are evacuating the building." The address of the building is 524 E. 72nd Street - a 50-story condominium tower built in the late 1980s and located near Sotheby's Auction House. The Belaire Condo, developed by William Zeckendorf Jr., has 183 apartments, many of which sell for more than $1 million. Several lower floors of the building are occupied by doctors and administrative offices, as well as guest facilities for family members of patients at the Hospital for Special Surgery, hospital spokeswoman Phyllis Fisher said. No patients were in the high-rise building and operations at the hospital a block away weren't affected, Fisher said. The Hospital for Special Surgery specializes in orthopedic operations.

Jeez, just hearing of this now. Awful that people are trapped! For those that are wondering about me, I don't work in NYC anymore. Peppermint does but on 57th. I think E2 goes to school in NYC but in lower Manhattan. I really don't know of others. Going to check out the news now. Langa

According to the news, 2 people on the plane died, Lidle and his instructor. Four civilians and 6 firefighters hurt. The tenants are allowed in the building now. So sad for those on the plane, but thankful no one else was hurt. Very bad weather in NY today - cloudy and rainy, and they think that might have been it. The plane hit the building nosefirst, leaving part of the engine in the building and the rest falling to the ground. Crazy! Langa
