Need vibes my daughter and her guy-UPDATE

Friday afternoon, my daughter Christine gets a phone call at work from a friend of her boyfriend, Jason, telling her that he was hit by a car while riding his motorcycle. She heads for the ER trauma center, where she finds Jason with a broken right foot, lacerations on his right hand and arm, and a huge laceration across his face, from the bridge of his nose to the point of his cheekbone. They could not stitch his face, because there was nothing left to sew together - the skin and tissue was gone. They send him home (he and Chris live together), with a soft cast on his right foot, and dressings on his face, with instructions to contact an orthopedist and a plastic surgeon Monday morning.
Talked to Chris last night. She took him to the plastic surgeon who said his wound was healing pretty well, and that they needed to come back in next week for another evaluation. He did not rule out future skin grafts or surgery yet - so that's a wait and see.
They also went to the ortho, after driving to the hospital to pick up Jason's x-rays. The trauma center on Friday had x-rayed Jason from top to bottom, and found that he had a small fracture of his right foot - that's all they saw. Well, the ortho took one look at the x-rays and found that his LEFT ankle is broken, as well as the small bone (tibula? fibula?) broken as well in his LEFT leg. So much for ER trauma center accuracy in looking at x-rays. The ER sent him home with a soft cast on the right foot and a pair of crutches which means he has to use the LEFT leg to get around. He told them again and again that his LEFT leg hurt, but they insisted nothing was wrong.
Bottom line is, Jason is now confined to a wheelchair for the duration. The ortho could only splint the left leg (couldn't cast it because it was so hugely swollen), and casted the right foot. Jason is an hourly pressman for a large printing company. He stands on his feet for 10+hours a day, lifts heavy loads of paper, ink, plates into his huge machine. He's out of work now, and we don't know how long. There is nobody living near Jason and Chris, so she has to be the caregiver. She works for the same company as Jason, and is a salaried employee, but, she's already used up all of her vacation time, so time off to take care of him, ???? don't know how that will be handled. They need both of their incomes to pay the mortgage and monthly bills.
The good news is that Jason's mother is an insurance agent in SC for auto/home, and she knows the ins and outs of claims. The guy driving the car that hit Jason, who is an adult - not a teen, HAS NEVER HAD A DRIVER'S LICENSE IN HIS LIFE! The car he was driving was owned by someone else, who fortunately, was honest in saying that she loaned her car to this guy, and who, fortunately is insured. Jason's Mom is going for it all. Total the Harley, all medical bills, current and future, pain and suffering, lost wages - the whole nine yards.
I think the ER/hospital should be sued for something for not seeing the breaks in his left leg, and sending him out the door on crutches. Even Chris, when she looked at the x-rays of his left leg could see the breaks. The poor guy was in a major accident several years ago and had to have metal rods and screws put up and down his left hip and leg - was in a wheelchair for 7 months. God only knows what damage may have happened to that with this accident.
I'm sorry this is so long, but I'm absolutely venting! I don't want your hugs or vibes. Just read this, and send them to Jason and Christine.

I'm so sorry to hear this and I will most certainly send some vibes up for your daughter and her boyfriend. This is something that my family has also gone through, and it was one of the hardest things we ever went through, but it also brought us a lot closer, and I pray that will happen for Jason and Christine, too... I want to share my family's story so I can also share what the end result was for us, emotionally. And I'm here if you guys need support.
When I was 16, I had a tumor removed from the left side of my nose. 4 days before the surgery, I had to have pre-op bloodwork, and my dad came to the hospital...my father, who was absolutely petrified of hospitals, showed up to support me because at that time we were worried that I might have cancer. And that was the last time I saw him before the accident. Later that afternoon, he called to say he'd be home sometime soon. 2 hours later, he still wasn't home...
A couple had run a stop sign at about 55 mph and my dad was on a road with no stop sign, also going about 55mph. Their car hit my dad's rear passenger side, then the 2 cars spun, crashed again, and ended up in a ditch. My father was wearing his seatbelt and this prevented him from going forward, but not sideways - from the driver seat, he went through the passenger side window and was pulled back into his seat. He had to have about 25+ stitches in his head.
He had broken his tibia and 5th metatarsal...he went to this orthopedic who said his foot was fine after like 2 weeks and had him walking on it... My dad got sent to a foot and ankle specialist, and he said it was clearly badly broken - my dad ended up having to be in the boot cast for a LOT longer because of the screwup by the first orthopod. Then, a couple of days after my surgery, my dad got one of his crutches caught on the top step and went tumbling down the stairs and broke his arm. He ended up in a wheelchair for months because of that.
When my mom and brother brought my dad home with his arm casted, our whole family just had to laugh. If we didn't laugh, we would have cried - and we had to turn to some type of humor in all this. My dad had been in the process of working with a guy who was going to retire and leave my father as CEO of the company. Unfortunately, the guy was a jerk and he stopped paying my dad after the accident and also ended up firing my dad and blowing the whole business deal...which not only resulted in lost wages, but also in losing a lot of money and time my parents had put into the business, as well as their hopes and goals. And if things couldn't get any worse, 2 weeks later, my brother broke his back playing soccer!
Why do I share all this? To say how we coped really.... You would think that a family would fall completely apart under circumstances like these - and some families do, but I think our family really came together. My mom was totally stressed from having to take care of all of us since she was the only one not injured. Fortunately, many friends and neighbors brought over food pretty much constantly for our family.
My dad and I would talk a lot about things. He continued to try to have a positive attitude, even after everything he went through. We used to pass the Footprints card back and forth whenever each other needed it... My family learned to rely on each other, and we got through it - we learned to be so thankful that we were all alive....I think we treasured each other just that much more. I'll never forget how my dad tried to find the humor in everything. I still hang onto that when facing adversity. I really look up to my dad.
I will most certainly keep Christine and Jason in my thoughts and prayers. I know this is going to be a very rough time for them, and it is often very discouraging to go through this, but they will get through it. My only "advice" would be to take each day as it comes...and try not to let all of the worries overwhelm all at once - especially since there are both health and financial issues to be concerned about here. That is quite a lot to handle...and it's easy to get overwhelmed. But they just need to lean on the support of family and friends, even if they are long distance.
And if there's anything that I can do from here, please PM me or let me know. Even if it's just support. Having been through something very similar with my family, I am always willing to lend support to others who are going through something similar. I know I don't know them, but I'm still here. I know I rambled on here, but this story really hit me - it was like I was reading the history of what happened to my family in many similar ways. And this is connected to some pretty strong emotions for me, and I will always be ready to help when I can when big traumas like these happen. I'll be curious to hear if they decide to sue the trauma team for not catching the fractures. Do you know if the ortho said that a lot more damage was done to the ankle by them not catching it? Sounds like it is awfully swollen.... I'm sorry that happened - but even that, we can relate to as my dad got screwed over by that dumb ortho that had him walking on a broken foot after 2 weeks. We didn't sue, but I don't know what went into that decision for my parents.

Latest news on Jason's situation.
Swelling was down enough to allow Jason to have his CAT scan, which shows two breaks in his left leg, ankle and small bone. The ortho said the break in the small bone could safely be casted. The break in the left ankle...cast or surgery. Jason opted for no surgery, just cast it.
So, now, he has casts on both legs and is confined to a wheelchair. We still don't know about the scarring on his face, letting it heal, then the plastic surgeon will make the decision.
Just to let you know how my daughter and her guy are doing...it's unbelieveable! He's in a wheelchair - right?
He wants to go shopping, so they rig a "slide board" for the car so that he can get in an out of the wheelchair to the car easily, and back out. They go to Wal-Mart (Jason opts to ride the little electric Wal-Mart cart - won't do that again - it's battery died) they buy a cheap secretary's rolling chair, because his wheelchair won't fit through the bathroom door. Jason shifts from wheelchair to secretary chair, rolls his butt to the potty, and shifts on, does his thing, shifts off to secretary chair, to wheelchair, and back,comfy as can be. They also found sweat pants with zippers from the ankle to the knee, which allows Jason to wear something other than shorts, which were making him a tad bit chilly.
All in alll, despite his major injuries, Jason has kept a great outlook (he's been here before, remember), and is doing marvelously well. Christine, who has become the 24/7 caregive is also doing great.
It's still going to be a long haul for the two of them - no income from Jason - but they are still waiting on hearing from the insurance company. Let's just hope they pay off nicely.

Oh man. The more ER horror stories I hear, the less inclined I am to ever go to one even in an emergency.
I'm sorry he has to go through this, and know the burden it has put on all, so sending coping vibes, energies and prayers for a nice healing all the way around, and for the insurance to compensate its due!

Glad to hear they are adapting so well, will continue to keep them in my prayers-speedy recovery and justice from the insurance company. Sounds like they have a pretty good system worked out there, dealing with each challenge. When he's all healed maybe they could be on Survivor, or the Great Race.
