My New Roomies First Day 'Home Alone'

I went last night and picked up my new lil best friend. He is a 10 week old black lab puppy that is pure black with one very small gray patch on his belly. It will take him a few days to adjust to the new place, as this is his first time away from momma and his siblings. I just amped out that I got the pick of the litter. He whined through the night, but I couldn't sleep anyway so won't blame him. Oh, and everyone freaks when I tell them his name: Zombie!  He knows his name by now too, as they have been calling him Zombie for over a week before I got him. He got tired of calling him dog #3 and asked what I wanted to name him.  Grin

Heading out to work in a few which I increasingly dread. My client has gone from being happy delusional to psychotic delusional, and his mother is about to throw him into a home if this keeps up. He told me yesterday he has had dreams of killing me and his little brother. Kind of tripped me out a bit though I tried not to let it show.

Been getting some sleep, but not much. None last night again. Not getting hit as frequent as I was with CH's, but also trying to avoid Trex whenever possible because though it may rescue me from a situation, it perpetuates the CH, I am convinced.

TGIF! I just hope Zombie doesn't tear the place to shreds while I am gone.

Peace,
Carl

Carl, as the proud companion of a 14 year old black lab, there are no words I can come up with at the moment of what you have gotten yourself into--tons of love and companionship and tons of mischief.  I just hope your're ready for all the shananigans, cause labs are famous for them.  Please post pics as soon as you can.  I'm glad to hear the CH hits are fewer.  Zombie will be a great late-night companion when you're having trouble sleeping.

Labs are great.

My favorite dog of all was a lab, a yellow named "Tabac".  Do not expect Zombie to be a watchdog though--he will accept any burglar as a friend, and will even help him carry things out.

And oh, yeah--he'll get into plenty of mischief while you're away.  When mine was a pup, he tore shingles off the outside of the house for his amusement.  Labs are also diggers--mine didn't dig holes, he dug graves.

But they're worth it--the best companions and greatest dog-friends you'll ever have.

Best,

George

Some words of advice on "puppy" training.

Leave the TV on while you're gone. Makes them think they're not alone.

Also, KEEP THE CLOSET DOORS CLOSED or you'll end up with a lot of shoes chewed up. I gave Homer a pair of slippers that he's enjoyed thoroughly. He takes them outside and brings them back in, sleeps on top of them, fights with them -- it doesn't take much to entertain him.

Enjoy the little bugger -- he'll weigh 100 pounds before you know it.  Cheesy

Good luck Carl.
He'll chew everything, your shoes, your furniture, the moulding around your windows. Then he'll shit in front of the fridge.  Tongue
Have fun.

My black lab is named Charlie.  He is 6 1/2 years old.  We got him at age of 1 yrs old.  But we have always made sure he had chew toys that were his to carry around and leather chew strips that he can chew and eat.  He barks and goes nuts if anything moves outside within his view of range.  Doesn't matter if it is a leaf rolling across the yard or a person walking down the street he goes balistic.  I agree with an earlier poster that said he will welcome anyone into the house also.  He goes nuts to warn us of intruder but loves the intruder to death if it comes in.  We got an invisisble fence to keep him in the yard and to keep him off the windows inside.  He would jump up in them and claw the wood work to pieces.  We eat ribs alot and give him lots of rib bones to chew down.  He loves them.  He is awsome to have when you are sick.  He will stay by your side and love you and make you feel better.  I think he will sence things that are wrong and give you loves to make it all better.

Congrats on gettin the puppy......he'll be a GOOD 'honest' friend for life. But it is BEST to crate them when ya leave em......they can chew thru wires or get tangled in them (my mom's did that and strangled itself behind the wall unit) or they can rip up furniture in boredom or get into sumthin dangerous. The thing is 'good habits are as hard to break as bad ones'.......best not to let him develope bad habits when alone like peein all over or tearin stuff up. Crates are pretty cheap and ya can get the small metal cages for 30 bucks at Walmart or find em at Goodwill stores dirt cheap or out of the paper. I use rabbit pen bowls that are aluminum and attach to the rails on the inside for food and use water bottles for water with little rabbit pen pan attatched below it I fill with water so they drink rite near the bottle nozzle and QUICKLY learn to use it. Puppies can be MAJOR DESTRUCTIVE if left to there own devices and not a good habit to learn when entertaining himself. Do you have a livestock supply store around your area ? If so you can get shots there and learn to do them yourself for about 6 bucks a shot. Just get the "puppy protector' cuz it doesn't have the lepto in it yet you should hold off useing till they are about 3 or 4 months old. (can cause a bad to serious reaction and I don't use it). So just get the puppy shot and do it under the skin behind the neck by holding it up. Explains it on the package. I can give ya names of great wormer products to buy at the store for once a month worming (which should be done cuz they never really get rid of them). If ya need any info or tips leme know cuz that is what my job is here at home. Critter whisper's Pam

Two words of warning on the invisible fence:

1. Some dogs are risk-takers, and they will blow by the fence zone because what's on the other side is just too tempting.

2. Even if it works at keeping your dog in the yard, it sucks at keeping other dogs OUT of your yard.

Good luck Carl. Whew. You're gonna be busy.  Cool

One thing about Labs. They are beyond friendly. They all make a beeline for your chair and put their not so dainty paws right in your lap. It's kind of a "HI! HOW ARE YOU? LET'S PLAY!" Nothing like a Lab all the way in your lap too.  Shocked Cool

Looks like fun Carl.
