Prostate Update

Hey guys - Sorry that it has taked me so long to post an update but I have been very busy. I've been all across the USA and have seen about 7 oncologists. Out of the 7 only 2, Johns Hopkins and Slone Kettering agree on a treatment program. They both tell me to wait until the cancer goes on the move and then start hormone and radiation. The reason is that there is such a small amount there they would not know where to direct the radiation. As for the hormone, they say that it will do more harm then good at this point. However, I am going to go to an alternative cancer treatment center in the Bahamas.  Shocked  I KNOW I KNOW - "What the hell are you going to waste your money on this for?" I have done the research and talked to a ton of people who have gone and I have gotten only great reports. I also had a M.D. look into it for me and he says that the science is sound. I will have to stay there for 2 months for the treatment. I will have my lap top with me and will send pics. I go down on Oct. 20th. I will keep you posted. - Jim

I run but it stays right my side
So tear me open, pour me out
There's things inside that scream and shout
And the pain still hates me
So hold me, until it sleeps

You might also consider soymilk and tomato juice. They aren't magic bullets, but some evidence that they can reverse slightly prostate malignincies.  Something to do between psa tests.

Soybean isoflavones possess hormonal and nonhormonal properties that may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, osteoporosis, and certain cancers, and alleviate hot flashes in menopausal women. Among the various cancers whose risk may be reduced by isoflavones, there is particular interest in prostate cancer. Eleven trials have examined the effects of isoflavones on serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels. The dose of isoflavones in these trials from supplements or soy protein ranged from 60 to 900 mg/day (typical Japanese intake is 30-50 mg/day), subject number/group ranged from 8 to 62, and study duration from 20 days to 1 year. Isoflavones did not affect serum PSA in healthy subjects. In contrast, in 4 of 8 trials involving prostate cancer patients, isoflavones significantly favorably affected PSA although in no studies was there an absolute decrease in PSA concentrations. The mechanism by which isoflavones affect PSA could not be determined from the existing research, although hormonal changes do not seem to be a factor. The clinical evidence is sufficiently encouraging to justify considering additional Phase II and III clinical trials investigating the efficacy of soy isoflavones in different populations of prostate cancer patients alone and in combination with other treatments.

    Lycopene and prostate cancer.

Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Department of Urology and Renal transplantation, Rae Breli Road, Lucknow-UP (226014), India. ansarimsa@hotmail.com

Despite being one of the most common malignancies, the preventable measures for prostate cancer remain poorly defined. Dietary intake of tomatoes and tomato products containing lycopene have been shown in cell culture, animal, epidemiologic and case-control studies to be inversely associated with the risk of prostate cancer. Its unique structural and biologic properties enable lycopene to prevent free-radical damage to cells caused by reactive oxygen species, thus acting as a potent antioxidant. Although some studies have provided contradictory results, these should not be considered incongruous to the many larger studies which have shown reliable results in favor of prostate cancer. Further research involving large randomized case-control trials would confirm the potential anticancer effect of this molecule, which might provide new dimensions not only to the prevention but also the treatment of prostate cancer.

Just don't forget to include traditional treatments as well. Who knows? Maybe some of the alternative stuff works though.
