school shooting in MOntreal

This has been on the news all day. I live in Montreal and attended this college in my 40's. It is a wonderful college and very diverse. There were four shooters. The police killed one of them and one took his own life. How do these nuts come together. What carnage. I have been emotional all day. Plus one of my fave patients died this am to start my day, then this.
What is going on with our young people?????Why is this phenomenon of school shootings going on. Such fine young people as victums. Please pray for them and their families.

I feel sorrow for the families effected by these asshats. I think that part of the problem is now a day's, parents aren't parents anymore...they are friends. Parents need to kick their kids in the ass once in a while, tell them that they can't have everything under the sun that they want and give them a dose of reality. It worked for all of us over 35.

Where are the parents who are supposed to be watching their children grow and change and notice warning signs??

The city is in shock this am. One girl 18 years old died. Others are still critical. The shooter was on myspace with pix of him with guns and on a goth vampire site calling himself the angel of death. Very demonic.
Where are the parents. You must remember the shooters were over 18 . One was 25 the one on the goth site. And even young children are very hard to monitor. You don't know what is happening when they are out of your site. It only takes a few minutes on the web to see something horrific. I never had a computer in my home till my oldest was 14 for this reason. Still the world is the world and parents are competing as never before with outside influences from the media. Why just last week we discovered that my little cousin who is 15 put up a provocative pix on my space. She was able to do it after she took a shower and was downstairs in her towel in a space of 15 minutes. Her mother sees her coming out the shower and who could guess that she is downstairs in her towel posting up a pix of her and get this her 9 year old sister in towels. I promptly notified my cousin . Have not heard the repercussions yet. It is so easy in this day and age to get caught up and kids are kids. Think of the shit we all pulled when young and most of turned out OK. Well this day and age the shit that can be pulled is from 0 to sixty in seconds with the internet, web cams, PM's instant messaging, easy access to drugs in school etc. I can't blame the parents 100%.
Some kids are "bad seeds" problems from day one especially with sociopathy which I believe you are born with and at present there is no cure.

What a horrible and heinous act. Why?? Someone please tell me why?? Why are humans the most dangerous and cold creatures on this planet. We don't kill each other for food, we kill each other for .... what?? I don't know what??

Maybe it's because our species wasn't supposed to live? Here's an interesting article I found a while ago that got me to thinking. http://www.livescience.com/othernews/060908_humans_odd.html It just has to do with physical characteristics, but you know how you read one thing and then one thought leads to another? We are definately out of the norm here for our planet, and our brains are wired so complex that in NO way can there be a perfectly functioning human brain.
You know how evolution makes a very unique and strange species, that eventually becomes extinct?? Well... 
so sad about the shooting, my sympathies with the families.

Such tremendous tragedy created by persons with these actions.
And what is a teacher to do, classrooms are full of trapped students. Letting them go, near any gunfire, is also a hard decision.
Quick police work is very thankful help.

There was only one shooter, Ricky - but that doesn't make this any less tragic. The link you attached confirms that, actually.
This next generation of people is so angry at everything. It just is gutwrenching to watch them destroy each other like this. I'm with you, Cat - why?
So much for Gun Control in Canada. That and our stupid Young Offenders' Act.  Our youth gun crimes are at an all time high because of it. The police aren't sure if it was their bullet that killed this young man, or if he turned his gun on himself at the end of it. He had already written his own epitaph on his blog before this happened. Live Fast, Die Young, Leave a Mangled Corpse. I'm praying for his soul too, here. There are 3 others this morning who might not make it.
I long for the days when teachers had teeth and could punish kids without consequence, and so could parents. Kids need guidelines and to be shown how to learn to be disciplined. Now, it's just a free-for-all for them. There are no boundaries and they are empowered to 'stand up for their rights'. We've become FAR too tolerant in this society and, sadly, this kind of thing is the result of that tolerance.

Oh yes I have to commend our civil servants in this case. and the teachers. Everything was done so well in spite of circumstances. Reaction was quick with no errors reported yet. A lot of quiet acts of bravery on the fellow students and teachers coming out reported.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. We have 6 computers in this house, my hubby and I are in computer related careers. My degree is computer science and I work from home.
We have used port blocking to prevent certain sites, but I can only control what they do here at the house. My 12 year old daughter knew she wasn't allowed on myspace, so one of her friends created an account for her using her email address. I am one of the fortunate few parents that my daughter (and my oldest - 14) trust they can come and talk to me. She actually came and told me about the myspace. So I struck a deal with her, we change the email and password to one of my yahoo emails, I have access at any and all times, and she is only allowed on it when I am next to her. Her initial reaction when she told me about the myspace was that she would have to delete it.
There's a saying, keep your friends close and your enemies closer. If I'd made her delete it, she would have simply started it up again somewhere else. We created an agreement that both of us can live with - I can monitor what's going on, she gets to use myspace as a means of expression.
When we were kids, music and other generally 'innocuous' means were our emotional outlets. Life is no longer that simple, the violent video games, the tv shows (Happy Days anyone?) - it's such a different world, and it means that as parents we have to learn to do things differently than our own parents did with us. My mom had no idea of the things I was up to, and I called a few months back saying I now know why some species eat their young, and that I can't understand why she didn't kill me (I was a hell raiser above and beyond the norm) and that there wasn't a jury in the land that would have convicted her.
We (collectively as parents) have to get back to a time when we know our kids teachers, we know our kids friends (to the best we can) and we involve them in conversation REPEATED conversation about the perils that will fall before them as peer pressure.
I know all my kids teachers, I stay in email contact with them regularly, and I am not so naive as to believe that "MY kids would never do that!". We are computer literate parents, that gives us a step up on the kids and their routes on the computer. They are not allowed on them without being in the same room with us. Their music is screened to ensure they understand that sometimes music leads to undesirable emotional states. We watch the television shows they watch, and try to make sure we keep an eye on what they are doing in their world.
No we can't be with them all the time, but we can hope that we have built a solid moral foundation for them. In my house, we have 2 absolutes - Life is the highest value, and Harm none. That is followed with the 3 R's which all kids entering my home must learn...Respect, Responsibility and do whats Right. And all of them can tell you the 3 things I hate most....Lying, Sneaking and Cheating.
It's a much different world with technology, but the core values, morals and ethics still have to come from the home. Teachers are not glorified babysitters....they are not responsible for teaching children to be good citizens - it is a part of the curriculum here where they go to school, it's called Character Counts. But their job is teaching reading writing and arithmetic. My job as a parent, is to ensure they are able to use that education under a structure of values they have learned at home. And that starts very very very early in life and must be done repetitively til they hate you 
When was the last time you told a kid to clean his room only ONCE and they did it? Why would any parent believe that just one conversation regarding the ills of drugs, alcohol, sex, violence etc. would have the same result? It's an ongoing communication, and I am blessed with having 3 beautiful children, ages 6, 12 and 14 that believe in an open line of communication with us their parents.
Ok off my soap box.
My apologies....this tragedy shouldn't be a lecture on where were the parents. It just baffles me...I cannot comprehend that kind of cold detached hatred.
