I may not have a house to go home to. I live in Highland just one block from the area they are talking about in this story. http://nwitimes.com/articles/2006/09/13/updates/breaking_news/d481b7570b4d6a81862571e8004e93a3. txt

Thanks Jonny. I must have screwed it up. I was trying to explain this to my wife on the phone while I was posting it. She's at work right now too and she's freaked.

Major flooding right by my house. 6 have collapsed within one block of my house. My house is 70 years old with a really bad basement that leaks real bad already. Important t hing is that my wife and daughter are not at home right now. If the house is screwed up, it can be fixed/replaced. My family can't. The article: ---------------------------------------- Storms wreak havoc in Region By The Times This story ran on nwitimes.com on Wednesday, September 13, 2006 1:49 PM CDT ADVERTISEMENT * The downpours that blasted Northwest Indiana this morning left much of northern Lake County under water, stranded motorists and even caused numerous basement walls to collapse. Highland appeared to be the hardest hit, with firefighters and utility crews called out to numerous addresses where basement walls were giving way and gas leaks were reported. Many of the addresses reported appeared to be within a block or two of Grace Street, both north and south of Ridge Road. Highland town manager Richard Underkofler said the biggest problems were on the town's north side, between Kennedy and Cline avenues, south of the Little Calumet River and north of LaPorte Street. Though the rain has slowed, he said officials didn't expect drainage to peak until around 3 p.m. today. Underkofler said the town today had received about 150 emergency calls as of 1:15 p.m., and the confirmed numerous reports included the collapse of basement walls. "The saturated high ground water table comes up and puts stress on the basement walls because we have a shallow water table in Highland," Underkofler said. People who were evacuated were being sent to the town's Lincoln Center, the headquarters for Highland's Parks and Recreation Department. Underkofler emphasized that residents in need of evacuation should call 911. And he advised residents with water in their basements not to go into the basement because they would subject themselves to the possibility of electrical shock. This morning's storms arrived after area grounds were already wet, especially after significant rainfall Tuesday afternoon and evening. The National Weather Service reported that by 10:35 a.m. today, parts of Lake County -- specifically the Gary, Highland and Griffith areas -- had received up to 4 inches of water. A flash flood warning was issued until 3 p.m. Areas of poor drainage and low-lying areas were most affected, prompting standing water on many of the region's roads. Standing water was found on the Borman Expressway, as well as numerous side streets -- including main local arteries. Local law enforcement and emergency management personnel reported 4 to 12 inches of water on many roads. After heavy morning storms, the rain is forecast to start to taper off this afternoon and evening, leading into a beautiful end-of-week stretch, with mostly sunshine and highs in the 70s from Thursday through Saturday, and possibly into the 80s on Sunday. For complete coverage of today's flooding, read Thursday's editions of The Times.

I sent ya pm. Fill your basement up to the brim with city water, then no flood water can get in plus it equalizes the outside pressure.

Thanks everybody. Here's the update. I don't know how long I'll be staying today. The river hasn't crested yet. I took the day off today cause I'm supposed to have a neuro appointment. I have to go there soon. When I get back, I'm walking down by the river to see how high it is. If I don't like how it looks, I'm picking up Mackenzie from School and going to my brother in laws house. BlueMeenie. I had no idea you had someone that close to me. I'm not positive where Strong street is but I know it's close. If she is in Highland at all then she had at the least flooded streets and a big mess. The houses that had damage were all very close to the Little Calumet River or Cady Ditch. I think Strong street was a little flooded but the houses there are OK as far as I know. What a mess. The water was so deep and running so fast, my daughters sand box (full of sand) was moved from my front yard to another location about 80 feet west in my back yard. The levee by my house breeched in two places and they're working on it now. The river that is 1/4 mile from my house isn't expected to crest till about 1:00 this afternoon. http://www.nwitimes.com/extras/flood/ The very first picture shows the School that my daughter was in yesterday. I'm pretty pissed because the morons kept it opened and told me that everything would be OK when I called them before shit got that bad. It still looks like an island and it's open today too.

Glad to hear that everybody's okay, Pat. My youngest brother is east of you in St. Joe County. I hear they've gotten a good deal of rain, but not the kind of flooding that you're dealing with. No useful advice to give, but you and your family are in my thoughts today. Best wishes to you and yours, and I hope the river crests soon, without any further problems. Best, George
