Story of the Weeping Camel

Just watched this National Geographic documentary tonight.  Short version is--they followed a Mongolian family which was having trouble with one of their Bactrian camels that had rejected its colt.  Interesting flick.

They tried all kinds of things, and finally elected to hire a traditional musician who came and played a particularly haunting song on a violin that was accompanied by a singer.  D&mnedest thing I ever saw.  The camel started to weep--copiously.  And it WORKED.  The camel accepted the colt.

EJ took a look around the net afterward--apparently the Mongolian people have a whole host of these songs that are specifically directed at different domestic animals--sheep, goats, etc.-- to produce particular effects.  The songs for each animal are different.

I suppose its a measure of something or other that it occurred to me while I was watching:  (You don't suppose that if I travelled to Mongolia and asked nicely, that they might be able to come up with a song that would cure....)

Nah.  Probably a bad idea.

But not any weirder than the chinese herbs and the hot peppers you're supposed to shoot up your nose, and the *&^% mask that plugs into the wall and heats up that I threw in the fireplace years ago and burned up out of hatred and loathing.

One of these days, somebody's maybe going to come up with something for us that actually WORKS.  With luck, it will be something ridiculously simple.  Without luck, it'll be another outrageously expensive pill or shot that has the side effect of making you grow another head, say.

Probably won't be a song, though.

Regards,

George

Ah! The foreigners put on such airs
Wearing the tangerine suits
And their harlequin eyes.
The pain they inspire
Draws in harmonica melodies
And the feathers of birds
Which flame up at their touch.
It all comes to light in the sheer
Debonair.

As I recall, the last time I saw the TFH, it was being worn by a different model.  Glad to see you found a younger, more attractive one.   Grin

George, there's a lot to be said on the power of music over animals.  Dairy farmers who play classical music have documented that they always find their milk cows have higher production.  Seriously.

And...this sounds hokey I know, but...our Barly (Chesapeake Bay Retriever) literally DANCES every time he hears Gary Glitter's Rock n Roll Part 2 - it's the damndest thing.  Same with Happy Birthday - he just gets up and starts wiggling.  He will recognize both these songs every single time if they play in the background on TV, too.  These are his two favourite songs.  We have R & R II on a cd that we play in the boat and he's damn near sunk us a few times when it comes on because he just can't stop himself from dancing.  I shit you not.

It not only works on animals. It may not cure a CH, but it sure helps with overall stressful situations and relaxation.  Can't live without my music.  Tongue

yeah, no kiddin!

However, he just came back from Vancouver Island with a cooler full of salmon and halibut that he caught last week out there.  I'm thinkin they didn't let him crank his tunes on the boat - PLUS they were up every day at 4:00 a.m. and stayed on the boat at LEAST 12 hours a day.  He lost count of how many he actually caught but I figure we'll be growing gills once we get through the catch!  Smiley  He's got a whole new batch of 'fishin stories' though.  God help me.

My dog used to go insane when ever I'd play Dream Theater.

And I agree that humans are heavily affected by music too. That's why I won't listen to music when I drive.

My daughter sometimes gets obsessed with sad songs and has to listen to them repeatedly.

Neal Young - Needle/Damage Done got to her pretty good as well as the song 'Ohio'.

And she loves to dance to the theme music from The Munsters.

Mega flipping DITTO!
Music keeps me sane and alive, and comforts me in the darkest hours.

I would be dead without listening to, creating and escaping through music.
