PayPal Fraud
« on: Aug 19th, 2006, 4:20pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

I was woken up this morning by a call from one of my credit card companies, asking if I had made a purchase through PayPal for $1350.00.  I told them that I had not and asked WTF.  They told me that someone had put in that I did make the purchase and wanted payment.  I told them that it was fake and to cancel my card.  I then logged into my PayPal account and saw that someone decided to deplete my bank account of $500.00 at midnight last night!  I called the bank and told them to get my money back!!!  What a fun day it has been, canceling credit cards, opening a new bank account and such!!  BASTARDS!!!  I can't believe that people suck sooo badly!  I hope whoever it is uses the money to buy a piece of rope, a chair and a sturdy beam...

I strongly belive that is was because of PayPal that I became a victim of identity theft.

Did you all end up clicking on the spoof emails or what?

I'm sorry, but unless you know exactly where the theft came from, why make PayPal users panic?

I don't take kindly to that unless there's proof.  Sorry, that's just how I feel about it.  I've used PayPal safely (especially with their toolbar) myself since 1999. Undecided

It dont take an email for a hacker to hack the paypal site, Melly.

Didn't a bunch of paypal accounts get compromised a while back because their servers were cracked?

I click no spam, don't have any trojan horses on my PC.  PayPal told me that my account had been hacked.  The good news is that whoever hacked it cannot see any info, other than the last four digits of my credit card and bank account, all canceled now.  The PayPal CSR told me that what happens is that someone sets up a PP account, hacks some legit accounts and sends money to the set up account.  They then withdrawl the money and take down the account.  I'm not trying to scare PP users, just letting people know.   I'm guessing that it only came from PP because the two transactions were PP based and none of my other cards had been hit.  YMMV

there has been a paypal scam going on for a really long time. They get in touch with you to tell you that there is something wrong with your paypal acct. Then they ask you to log on and give information.... Someone in your house may have answered the email and given out your information... it really looks authentic.... I dont have a pay pal account so when I got the email I knew it was a scam.  Thats why I don't have a pay pal account.... just don't trust those.....ree

paypal has had a monoply for too long.  If you are a business owner they do some really invasive things with your bank account.  I don't use them anymore either but mostly because they think they are God.
Looking forward to having Google start something up.

If you have a paypal account, you should have your own email no one in your house has access to. If everyone in your house has the password to your email, then anything can happen with any email scam. Or should I say spam.

I don't use it any more, I don't trust it. I constantly get notifications to update an account that I closed a year ago. They can keep it.

That sucks Tom  Angry

I've been lucky with Paypal. Been there since 2001. One thing I never do is use any link of any kind to get there. I always do it the long way. I get all kinds of shit that purports to been from them but I delete it all.

Weird.......I cancell'd my paypay account cuz I was worried about them and all the spoof mail I was gettin......got one that had my last 4 digits of my credit card on it so I freaked and cancel'd my account totally. And they also told me I spent the allowed limit and needed to get verify'd and give them my checking or bank account numbers. But ya know what......I bought sumthin on ebay for a couple bucks and 'just for the hell of it' tried to pay it with paypal........and it went thru !!! And my limit was increased without verifying like they said I HAD TO DO BEFORE to continue useing it. WTF'r Pam  Undecided

How do you OFFICIALLY cancel the dam thing ??? I just found out it was still active........

ps: my credit card co called a while back AGAIN tryin to get us to buy fraud protection.....they go on and on and on about it so Brad told them to send us all there INFO on it and price ect ect so he could read it over. They switched him to anouther operator and she wanted some info and said we had agree'd to recieve the fruad protection and pay for it thru the previous operator and Brad argue'd with her saying NO WAY. They told him they will NOT send the info unless you sign up to recieve it and get charged monthly. Was kinda pricey last time I talked to them.....so much on the dollar on your balances. I don't owe much rite now but it was still ALOT. Kind of scarey !!!

After a fun day with the three credit companies, and the bank, I am getting fully reimbursed for the missing cash.  PayPal is going to refund my money and the bank already credited my account until PP pays up.  What a fun day it has been.  Did you know, you cannot speak with a person at any of the credit companies?  I didn't.  I just wanted to speak with someone to see if my credit had been hit and all there is, is a system to automated report fraud or to order a credit report.  Nice...looking for the service in Customer Service... That's the problem... You're not the credit bureaus' customer... The card merchants and financial institutions are their customers... You're just a number.
