for MCRD in San Diego. I am having a hard time with this, and I had already written out a long post, and then my fucking finger hit a couple buttons erasing everything I had written. I came into Matt's life (I have 5 other brother-in-laws and one sister-in-law that are Jesse's siblings, with Matt being the 3rd one to go into the Marines) when he was only 6 years old. It was 8 months after their mom died from an asthma attack. Kevin, the youngest, was 5 and Jesse (my husband) was 18. I've watched the younger boys grow up into men, and can't help feeling a tad maternal towards them, even though I don't show it at all in front of them. I don't think I'll be going to the recruiters office to see Matt off. I don't want him to feel bad about leaving. So, he is stopping over this morning to say goodbye. I have never been good at goodbyes, so I just have to tell him, 'see you in October when you graduate'. I know some probably don't care, but I felt as if I had to get my feelings out in print and in the company of friendship. Thanks for just hearing me out a little, even though my words are kind of vague. Thanks, mel

Matt is more of a man today than 98% of the "men" in America. Please thank him for his service on my behalf. Bill

Mel, he will be a little more grown up when you see him next, and this must be such an exciting time for him. Hopefully he will be able to email you over the next weeks, so that you can follow along. He deserves congratulations.

Thanks everyone, for being here and everything. edited to add: Well, he's gone now. It was a sort of hurried goodbye, but he has to be at the recruiters office for 10am (it's 8:30 now) and he still has a couple stops to make. I hand wrote him a letter, and put a quote at the top that said, "Believe in your strength and your youth. Learn to repeat endlessly to yourself, 'It all depends on me.'" He'll be OK, I know that now. *sniff*

Sorry your feelin sad......but just think that he is OFF to start a brand new life......a big change to his life is in the makeing......he is a man now and he is off on a venture of nothing but good. We were pretty proud my my daughter when she joined the army cuz she was headed nowhere fast......she really grew up and learned alot and it changed her. She put in 11 years and quit and now she regrets it.....she was in the reserves and had got several promotions which is difficult for a women. We felt she could of made a carreer out of it and done better for herself but she fell in love with a hillbilly guy and gave it all up. She talks about the miltary all the time and how she misses the close companionship they all develope that is hard to explain to anyone else. But she has alot of good memories Pam
