Ok, I don't much agree with Charlie, we all know that...but...I tried that "technique" that he talked about, the thinking the blood from the attack region thingy...well...2 hits down with no trex and aborted in 12 minutes with only ice. Don't go thinking that we are going to see eye to eye on political issues but thanks for the tip!

Yep. I stumbled across something similar to Charlie's technique somehow a long time ago. You really can train yourself to alter your blood flow, and it does seem to help me. It's never aborted one of my headaches, but it helps me to cope with one sometimes. I found it a lot more difficult to learn than Charlie did, though. Maybe because I didn't really believe I could do it. So kudos to Charlie. Wish I'd had his Neuro. Best, George

I've used it a lot over the last few years, it helps me to concentrate on fighting and helps to keep me a little more calm than normal, and that in itself is a huge weapon. Thanks Charlie.

| Did it take you to "Dr. Wright's circulatory technique"? If so, just read it and try to use it during your next attack.

| What I've done is think the blood away from the hit point on the inhale and think it down toward my body on the exhale. You can actually feel your body getting warmer and your head getting cooler and the pain releasing. It took some practice before getting hit but it does work. I aborted another this morning doing this, one that woke me up and was full blown by the time I got up. In 15 mintues it was gone and no trex was used. Give it a try it is worth it.

Having used abortives and Verap for the first time last cycle, I can now say that for me, This technique or similar methods of breathing and mediatative techniques have worked far better than medication. I can usually directly relate the length of a hit to how worked up I get during the hit. The more I allow the pain to dictate my actions the longer and more intense the hit is.

| Totally agree. Long, slow breaths. Systematic relaxation of individual muscles in the face and neck. (As a consequence of long practice in this, I can wriggle each ear independently--cracks up a 4-year-old every time.) Shifting the focus of attention from the knifepoint to an adjacent region where the pain is less intense. (My favorite is just under the skin of the forehead on the headache side.) No fighting, and no pacing if possible--very hard to do, but worth it. The result is a trance-like state where the pain still exists, but attention is not focused on it. I use the blood-flow thing as part of my personal coping technique. This stuff only works on hits that are a kip 8 or below, though. After that, I'm a train wreck. fuggedaboudit. And it is all coping stuff for me....doesn't ever abort or even shorten my headaches. Cluster headaches are more like storms that come and go--the coping stuff just allows me to construct a crude little shelter out of burlap and sticks where I can get in out of the worst of the weather. Regards, George

| OMG George - my hubby can do that too!! Maybe it's a clusterhead thing!! Maybe we should do a poll? We can't wait until our grandbaby is old enough to notice Grampa wiggling his ears. sorry, back to your originally scheduled thread here.... thanks for your tips here too, George - really explains Charlie's post in further detail. | You have no idea how good this makes me feel. How this thing worked for me was to make a 20-30 minute hit shorter, often 10 or 15 or better. Every now and then abort the thing very quickly. It's hard work but then it beats destroying furniture and kicking the cat around. Good luck kids. (even you neocons....) Charlie
