Haven't we seen that strategy before - from bin Laden?? When a miltary in one place does something, retaliate by hitting non-combatants in hi-rise buildings somewhere else? If you think Israel is trying to avoid civilian casualties in Lebanon, you aren't paying attention.

Sure, the Israeli military blamed it on the media. And then they admitted the media wasn't misquoting the Israeli military guy, but that maybe the military guy was the one who made the mistake:

Missiles are coming from a narrow strip in the south of the country, and planes are levelling hundreds of apartment buildings in the north of the country. It has nothing to do with Hezbollah - the 'clean break' strategy was developed years ago, and now they are implementing it.

So here we have another Israeli general (ret.) admitting that his country is targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure to try and indirectly put pressure on Hezbollah - in spite of the fact that the government of Lebanon doesn't have the strength to do anything about them. And people like you can still pretend that they aren't targeting civilians, or that targeting civilians isn't a war crime.

Larnaca, Cyprus (AHN) - United Nations humanitarian chief Jan Egeland Monday harshly criticized Hezbollah for using Lebanon's civilian population as cover in its fight with Israel.
Speaking to reporters following a visit to Beirut, the AP quoted Egeland as saying, "Consistently, from the Hezbollah heartland, my message was that Hezbollah must stop this cowardly blending ... among women and children."
Egeland deplored not only Hezbollah's tactics, but also the fact that the terror group would boast over putting civilians in such danger.
"I heard they were proud because they lost very few fighters and that it was the civilians bearing the brunt of this. I don't think anyone should be proud of having many more children and women dead than armed men," he said.
While in Beirut Egeland also condemned Israel over what he called a "disproportionate" use of force that constituted "a violation of international humanitarian law."
The Fourth Geneva Convention, however, does not preclude military strikes against civilian areas illegally used as cover by enemy combatants.
"The presence of a protected person may not be used to render certain points or areas immune from military operations," reads Article 28 of that document.

I agree, and don't think it goes far enough in criticizing both the murderous shalomers and the murderous salaamers. The Hezbollah rockets can't be aimed, and sending them at cities like Haifa is a war crime. Hezbollah is using civilians as a shield - in the south, which is also deplorable. And Israel also has no interest in civilians except as targets, since most of the weapons are hidden unless they are being fired to the south, and so many civilian targets are far to the north. Israel attacks the innocent to make the guilty 'pay' - except attacking the innocent really only punishes the innocent. I have consitently held that neither Hezbollah nor the Israeli military are saintly, and I don't think it is in the interest of the US to give up our traditional role of mediator and join the dog fight.
