Fishin' Tale (Not CH)

Now I gotta tell ya....I have a grandson who dearly loves to fish. He fits in real well with this G'ma, cause I am obsessed with the sport. Dalton has fished with me for years (he's 11). All those years, he NEVER caught a fish....cause he won't leave the damn bait in the water long enough. I'm talkin' bass fishin', cause that's what I like, and artificial bait. Last month he came over to the lake, and instead of a plastic worm, I put a 1/4 oz. spinner bait on his line, cause I figured he'd have to leave that in the water. Well bless his heart, he caught fish! He's been beggin' ever since to come back and fish. OK he's back, and today I took him up to the big bridge on Toledo Bend. This bridge spans 2 1/2 miles long, and the spot where it crosses the Sabine River, is the Texas/Louisiana State Line. It's about 20 miles from the lakehouse, and I bet he ask me 1000 questions before we got up there. What bait we gonna use? Can we use live bait? How deep we gonna fish? How long we gonna fish? G'ma, how much farther till we get there? Are we bass fishin"? How deep are the fish?.....on and on and on. You see, I'm all for him catchin' fish...but I have learned that there are certain ways to fish with him....cause he'll get bored real quick. So, today I took him to the bridge, tied a big ole crank bait on his line, and we proceeded to troll in the river channel. We hit a honey hole where the river makes a bend, and holy shit, we raked in the striper and white bass. The ice chest was overflowing.....and the fish were floppin' all over the boat. I finally had to turn on the live wells and put the fish we were still catchin' in there. He absolutely had a ball! These were nice fish! Most went 3-4 lbs. He's already askin' when we're gonna go again I just had to share this....cause this is really not my type of fishin', but I enjoyed the hell out of it. I never dreamed that he and I would fill an ice chest AND the live wells. He's hooked! No way he's gonna go back to Texas till he hits that river channel again. It thrills me to see my kids happy It takes very little to make them feel that way. Take a kid fishin'! You'll never regret it...and you'll make a friend for life. Jean

| Great post, Jean. I really enjoyed it. One of the most memorable experiences of my life was teaching a week-long fly fishing class to a group of kids between 10 and 14. What a hoot! I think I learned more from them than they did from me. Nice to hear about your fishin' grandson. Tell us any new stories that come along--please? He's hooked deep, now, f'sure. Best, George

I caught a 6 lb bronze back on crank bait in Little Sandy Res 6 years ago, I wanted to keep her and put her in my 300 gallon tank, but I didn't think she'd make the trip home so I released her. Sandy res is loaded with big fish, but access sucks. Definately a very cool fish Sean...........................

Jean, wonderful story !! But dear lady, please tell us all what we're longing to hear................ who REALLY caught the biggest fish Really great advice, "take a kid fishing".......but if I may add to it............ take a mom fishing is just as great. I love it when my son and I go fishing, something we can share that's quite different. And, for the record, I caught the biggest fish on our last trip....LOL love you Jean, EDNA

No smallies here....those are up north. We have largemouth/black bass. Our lake waters are 95 degrees...too warm for the smallies. Biggest bass for me was a 8.69. That took big bass of the year for me in a bass club I fish. My next largest is a 8.68. I'll not stop till I get a double digit..LOL Jean

Don't ever take Kaleb fishing!!!!! I love fishing...and Kaleb "thought" he did. We only went a couple of times when he was younger. We just fished in the lake for Trout. He get's bored REALLY easy...then starts flinging the pole around...then in the water...I've had to untangle the line from trees...rescue poles from the lake...re-bate (he wouldn't touch the worms), recast every 30 seconds, etc, etc. And he's even caught one before by MY GOD would he touch it?? NO WAY!!! Freaked out! Something about a mother and son time on the lake...I'm surprised he lived Mast

We love fishing too. I live on the Long Island Sound and when my son was little he'd go everyday. I grew up in Northern New Jersey and trout fishing was my thing. I can't remember what I did yesterday but I can remember when I was twelve and caught 3 trout in one day !!! And I certainly remember all the fish my little guy caught right here !

| Anytime you're willin', Jean, and the creek don't rise... Not much to learn, as far as casting goes. A person can teach anybody to fly cast in about two hours. The rest of it takes a lifetime to learn. Plenty of willing trout up here to practice on. (Idaho). All the best, George

Great story, Jean! I loved reading it. Oh, one of my best memories come from a fishing trip I went with my dad... We were fishing around 6pm and got 11 fish within an hour! It was a beautiful night and we had a great time. And mum was busy cooking the fish for the rest of the weekend.. Heh heh... Sanna
