Skype is good, but then again, just about every major IM network has it's own VoIP service now. Of course, the other networks don't have free calling to telephone numbers. Then again, free SkypeOut is limited to US and Canada, and only for a limited time. Finally, you have to consider the compatibility of the various IM and VoIP networks, especially when most internet addicts aren't really looking to communicate via voice. Personally... I would like to see the various networks become more compatible with each other, and third party clients, so that theres better choice in what client to use, yet you don't have to worry about having 5 different IMs runnin' just to keep in contact with everyone.

Download skype, and get yourself a headset with a microphone. They are fairly inexpensive. In my opinion, the best ones are those that have the rca plugs, they have 2 plugs that go into the (usually color coded) pink and green audio ports on your computer.
Add some contacts, and right click on their name. The first option says "start call". Of course, they must be online, and also have a headset. Clicking that option starts the call, and if you get a call, a window pops open. You click the green button to answer... voila!... you are talking to them.
It sounds better than talking on the phone. You can also chat like yahoo or msn. And transfer files up to 4 gigs in size. And, it's encrypted.
You can also call anyone's phone with it too, and you must purchase credit to do it, but it is cheap. And you can call any phone in the USA or Canada until the end of the year for free. And I believe this month only, you can call Europe for free.
