Wednesday evening we had one of the worst storms to hit this area in 50 years, with hurricane force winds. Power is out over half the town and also several towns from st louis MO area to Ofallon, IL. I have power at home but no air, and it has been brutal so my sis in law offered for me to stay here last night.
Down from my apartment, all of the streets were pitch black and no houses had power. It was DARK. I got a few blocks away and had just passed my old childhood home, my mind racing over having to do this show tomorrow night, not knowing half of the songs, and having to REBUILD the guitar I am using tomorrow night.
I got down on Lincoln Ave. and a black guy and a white guy, late teens/ early twenties approached me. "You got a cigarrette man?" I responded "No." I had my back pack hanging off of my left shoulder. "What's in the bag?" I was annoyed. "Hoffa". What happened next seemed to only take 3-5 seconds. The kid hit my face reaching up quickly to grab the pack off of my shoulder and clawed my arm!!! As he leaned forward, I raised my right arm back and brought my elbow down on his neck. The kid went down, the black kid took of running as I repeatedly kicked the other guy, reached down, grabbd my backpack and RAN!!! It all happened so fast I'm still replaying it in my mind in disbelief.
I got to a buddy of mines house shaken and freaking out. I told him what happened and he said that another friend of his was jumped on the same street a couple of blocks down, not long ago by a white and a black kid. It was so dark I couldn't reallly make out thier faces.
First thing I did when I got here to my brother' house is put peroxide on the scratches on my arm. Then, it took awhile to calm down and my sis in law said "What if you really hurt that kid?" Then I started panicking again (like I haven't done THAT enough the past week). After some thought on it, I had calmed down. I look at it this way: It was self defense and in the dark, I didn't know if they had weapons or not. The dude just lunged at me, hit my face grabbing fo the strap of my pack and dragged it off of my arm. I reacted so fast... I told my sis in law I didn't know I had THAT in me. My brother said he hopes I fucked the punk up enough that he'll think twice before trying to harrass or jump someone else. It was also pointed out to me by a friend that with all of the stress I have been under, I just cracked when the situation occurred and all of my frustration came out on these punks.
I've walked these streets a thousand times and never had anything like this happen to me. And it happened right in the hood I grew up in.
Now, I get to go home and rebuild a Bently guitar that has pickups falling in, jack inside of the guitar, etc. and learn 20 more songs for tomorrow's gig. I have also been asked to do another acoustic duo with my buddy Chuck a couple of nights a week. So, taking deep breaths, trying to move without hurting so much (I feel like death warmed over, and we have MORE storms on the way).
What next? Will I be attacked by a slew of Micro-Miniatiure Cuban-born Chinese Circus Midgets for pissing on their parade?

PS - You may think I overreacted, but I had a friend murdered two years ago by two 15 year old meth-heads ho beat him to death. I'm not taking any fucking chances. The dude hit and grabbed and clawed me first. I just lost it on him for doing so.

No, you didn't react. If they had found Hoffa in your backpack, think of what would have happened. You had no choice.  Seriously, I'm with your brother. Maybe he will think twice next time. Sure glad they didn't have guns on them. I read about the outage in St Louis. 1/2 million without electricity. Gonna be more fights if they don't get it retored soon.

Not only did you not over react but I would have finished the job and broke his freakn neck!  or set his head on the curb and stomped till mush. I before moving had similar happen in washington park east stl and beat the guy with a wrench for almost 5 min and when I called the cops I told them he would be easy to spot if he is still alive, I just left him there bleeding. Sorry guys I do not let stuff slide when they try to kill me.

I would have probably beat him more then you did, he got what was coming to him, if anything you should be proud of yourself for teaching a punk a lesson that I hope he will not forget any time soon.

No, you didn't over-react, Carl. Sounds like you got a bit of an adrenaline rush, but you got control of it. I would have stomped the guy into the ground, until he was a bloody pulp. Forget dragging his ass to the phone, I'd have finished the walk, then called them. He would have still been there.
If you happen to see these particular ass holes again, wink at them, then raise your arms a bit. Then watch the stupid fuckers run. Taught the guy a lesson? You bet your ass you did. Good job!!
