How do we feel about stem cell research? I'm on the fence on this one but also a daibetic.

And that is the debate. Do we kill living embryos to do research?
Shame it's such a tough debate cause so much good could come from the research but does it outweigh the sanctity of life?
This bill/veto is actually about - do we spend more Federal $ on stem cell research, not do we do the research. You can do the research on newly created stem cell strains but don't get Federal funds. You can do the research using existing stem cell strains and get Federal funding.

I am Catholic and not supposed to believe in this type of thing, But!
I also believe that if God didn't want us to have the intelligence to figure out these kind of things, he never would have given us the intelligence to do so!
If we can cure many things by doing this research and testing, I say "Go for it!"

Theres a shit load of embroys that are going to be killed OR we could use them to probably ease some peoples pain?
Someone clear this up for me, please!

It is up to YOU to educate yourself and then help your doctor plan your treatment. If you just sit down in front of your doctor and say "make me better" you are setting yourself up for a great deal of pain.

I am not opposed to it I just think its a slippery slope. At what point do you stop growing an embryo ? 1 month, 3 months ? At what point does it become unethical?

The irony that nobody sees:
Right now, there are several technologies that use adult stem cells. But adult stems cells are not as flexible as embryonic stem cells - they can change into some tissue types but not others. If the 'pro-lifers' can sucessfully push for only adult stem cell research, then some day we might unlock that secret. When we get to the point where 'adult' stem cells are so flexible that they can change into any or all tissue types, there might not be any difference between 'adult' stem cells and embryos!! Each adult stem cell would have the potential to grow into another adult person (if it were implanted in a womb or some not yet developed incubator.) Then some people would be wringing their hands about what to do with trillions of stem cells that we have on tap.

I guess the deal is that embryos are created at fertility clinics for those of us that have trouble getting or staying pregnant. They create many many embryos, but only implant one in the woman, the rest are destroyed. Some want to use them for research rather than destroy them.
Why is it ok to kill animals for research?
Remember when the neocons kept saying "the good of the many outweigh the good of the one", as a justification to kill innocent iraqi people? I guess that doesnt apply in the USA.

The days of the New Fontier are now truly a thing of the past. With Bush and some his drunk with power Bible thumper types (These Christian Right types are more Right than religious) are terrified of education. Careful thought isn't their thing.
When nearly every researcher, scientist, and 70% of the populace sides with science, you'd think he'd take a chance and do what Americans would like, not Pat Roberston. Like his Byzantine Medicare drug benefit, his convoluted stem cell research guidelines are cosmetic only. 
Even weird Bill Frist backs the idea. That takes some doing.

Utilitarianism is a slippery slope. I think anyway.
I am against embryonic stem cell research. Regardless of whether it will happen or not, I am definately against my tax dollars being used to fund embryonic stem cell research.
While I do think that it would be a wonderful thing for many diseases to be cured...I do not think that this should be done at the expense of human life. It is, in my opinion, parasitical.
I have been thinking a lot about this story lately, and think that it relates directly to the embryonic stem cell debate:

I think much good could come from stem cell research; however I also think some very bad things can come from it. To put it bluntly, it aint nice to fuck with mother nature. If you look at the very long term ramifications, you are nullifying natural selection. way down the road, mankind's genetic pool will be built on a house of cards.
