...this is a fore warning. Grin

I'm applying a job in 2 newspapers in Canada. One of them is located in Thunder Bay and the other is in Toronto.

Naturally it's far too soon to tell if I get one of the jobs, but if I do, I'll be bugging you already in September! Grin

I thought that it would be fair to tell you already, so the shock won't be too big... Grin

Best wishes & PFdays,
Sanna

Sanna,

Just my personal opinion - if you have a choice, go for Toronto. You will feel isolated in Thunder Bay. It's kind of in the middle of nowhere. Toronto is a thriving metropolis. Thunder Bay seems like an afterthought that sprung up after the white man no longer traded beaver pelts.

Unless you like isolation, in which case, go for Thunder Bay. The sunrise over Lake Superior can be stunning.

Bill,

thank you for your advice. Smiley I appreciate it a lot.

I'm the kind of gal who is at home everywhere, so I don't think that Thunder Bay would be a problem for me.

But I must admit, that if I could choose between the two, I'd pick Toronto. And why? Because I have wanted to visit Toronto for a long time! Smiley

better yet, Sanna - why not apply  out west here?  Vancouver (where Broomie lives) or Calgary (where I live).  West is best!!  Vancouver is absolutely gorgeous with mountains and ocean right in the same city.  Here in Calgary, we are the gateway to the Rocky Mountains.

Vancouver Sun, Calgary Herald - those are the two big papers in these cities.

Just thought I'd put in a plug for the west. Wink  See, Grandma Carol's away right now (she's lives just outside of Toronto), so she can't whack me!  LOL

Have you seen the movie Shipping News? It is about a guy who moves to a small town in the Maritimes in Canada to work for a newspaper.  Good film.

On days like this in NC (90+ degrees and muggy) I dream of places like Thunder Bay, Ontario. A perfect day would start with waking up to a chilly sunrise, pulling on a sweater and some shorts and going down to "Timmie's" (Tim Hortons Donuts) for some coffee and a cruller. Then heading home to pick up the fishing gear and going out on the lake, tossing a few lures in and pulling out some fresh perch, heading home and having a cold Molson beer with a toasted tomato sandwich (freshly picked from the backyard) and maybe some salt and vinegar potato chips, then hanging out for awhile, cleaing the fish caught that morning in the afternoon until I cook some freshly picked corn on the cob, along with the lightly floured pan-fied in butter perch filets and new potatoes with butter. Then a nice camp fire along about dark, a couple more Molsons, then the marshmallows, Hershey and Graham Crackers for fresh S'Mores.

Nice Canadian fantasy....

naw, life is pretty good here in God's country.   We're fine just as it is.

That's just 'cause it's summer though right now and we're livin' the good life.  Once winter rolls in again, we might change our minds....

Wink

And, actually - it's pronounced "Tunder Bay", we only say THunder Bay when we're trying to make it so Americans can understand us.  Tongue

I love Canada. Breathe taking western coast! I have fond memories of walking around Vancuver and Victoria. Loved (excuse me if I spell these wrong) Nanoose Bay and Esquimole.

Esquimalt.  Pronounced "Ess-KWY-mal"  (I think...LOL)   I think you're right on Nanoose Bay though.

It's gorgeous out on the Island (where Victoria is).  I would live there in a hearbeat if I could!!  I was born in northern BC and a part of me never really left the province I guess.

I remember walking into a bar in Victoria in my Navy whites with my buddies and all these eye were glued to the tv. I looked up to see what was so interesting and there was this guy pushing a rock down the ice and others with brooms. LOL, we were like what the hell are the people on, but after the 4th or 5th beer we were bought, we really got into sport.
Seems alot of my stories about Canada start with " I walked into this bar"! How aboot that?

We're really making a case for Sanna to move to Canada aren't we? LOL. I have to warn you Margi that I was trained by the best, no doubt you've heard of the elite Navy Seals. Well there was no way in hell I could do anything like that, so I decided to hone my elite drinking skills. And as long as my liver is still kickin, I say bring it on baby!

If it helps in your decision making, the cost of living in Toronto is really quite high for rents and things like that.

Thunder Bay is a little smaller and is one of my favourite spots.  My oldest daughter was born up there and there's just something enchanting about the whole area.  Beautiful lakes and rivers, cleaner air and all of the good things life has to offer.

Good luck and please keep us posted as to where you end up.

They do say aboot in the East . I live in Montreal. You ask someone what they did today and the answer is Oh I was oot and aboot. And Tim Hortons is the bomb. My youngest went to their camp in the Rocky Mountains in Alberta. He has pix that look like picture postcards. I live in French Canada. Think you could learn French? It's worth it.
