A very dear friend is so emotionally troubled that the only option medical science can give them is to be committed and drugged into a near catatonic state. This friend mentions that they would rather die than to be drugged, and seems to be suggesting they wish to take their own life. Do you try to talk them out of suicide considering the options they must face?

The fact that the person is my very dear friend is more about me than it is about that person. I wouldn't want to lose them, but that is about me rather than about them.
In candor, I'd have to say that I'd tell them that I wish they wouldn't consider suicide--however, I believe that they are a free human being, and any decision they make I would support and understand. It isn't for me to judge them.

Here's one for you:
You are in the pursuit as a law enforcement officer of seizing and selling the assets of criminals. One of the types of items you seize and sell are firearms. You seize and sell a firearm to a woman who is legally allowed to purchase said firearm. She gives the firearm to her son, who is later stopped by a patrol officer whom you know, and who is a friend of yours. The son uses said firearm to kill the patrol officer. Do you bear responsibility for your friend's death?

If a perosn is so emotionally unstable that being committed/medicated is a real option then that person isn't capable of rational thought all the time. Suicide isn't an option counceling is.

When I first read this my first thought was "illegal sale" of confiscated goods.
Since it seems that the sale was legal then no, no responsibity is shared because the weapon was used to kill. The P.D. is responsible for sanctioning a stupid policy of putting mores weapons in circulation when it should have been destroyed but thats not the officers responsibility. Change that policy and some good may have come out of this.

I have been like that friend. 
I was lucky as I realized I wasn't mentally stable and asked hubby to get me help, which he did.
When you are the one that's losing it, anyone who gets you help, even when you don't want it, can become your saving grace.
So yeah, I'd try and get them committed.

I would also try and talk them out of it, and see if I can help by researching and maybe finding a better doctor or counselor or what ever they need to get them some help.
If you are a believer in god or not, suicide is an express train to hell, if you are not a believer would you still want to take that chance, I am not one to talk since these headaches have pushed me closer to this then I ever wanted to be and seemed like a very possible option at the time but now that I am getting some PF it seems like the dumbest thing there is. It is all a state of mind so instead of suicide the friend needs desperate help in finding a way to alter there state of mind so they do not want this.
Hope it works out and they do not have to be committed and still find some relief.

By all means talk to them. The worst thing that can happen is that they go through with it anyway. At least you'll have tried.
I wish I had been able to talk to my cousin nine years ago. She was 45. Miss her.

This was years and years ago, and the policy WAS changed. Weapons are now destroyed. I'm retired now, and out of the loop. I know that on a rational level I'm not responsible for a stupid policy that I only carried out--but it doesn't change the responsibility I feel on a non-rational level. I don't think anyone gets to a "certain age" without accumulating some things that you carry around, whether justified or not. You can forgive yourself, but you don't forget about them.
Sorry--wrote the first post when I'd had a couple of beers and was feeling mawkish and pensive. Always best not to write under the influence. I know better.

No problem...physical or emotional is as final as Suicide. ...medical science may come up with a "cure" for her/his emotional troubles in time.

Haven't we all at some point with our pain wished for death, I know I have. Luckily I had my gf to help me through all of that, we just broke up after 10 years and soon I'll have to deal with the beast alone.

Remember that.. not your fault.God bless you.  Secondly , my dear friend , yes commite , show life worth while in every and any possible way . Couldnt kill , now if there is a DNR , THATS ANOTHER STORY ,OUT OF YOUR HANDS. I woud try to help ,with medical studies these days , there are always options to not opt out.
