We were putting in ties today and lost a pin in the crimping bucket. The guys were putting it back in and were giving me directions to run the cylinder in and out to line up the holes. Well one of them had his hand in the wrong spot at the wrong time and I crushed it between the cylinder and the bucket. It wasn't pretty and I felt soo bad. He is having surgery on it to put the bones back where they belong in the morning. I know it had to hurt like hell. Lessen of the day, watch your hands when working with metal, its unforgiving.

Oh man, dude I am sorry, I know it sucks to know you hurt someone especially if they have to have surgery, even if it was not your fault. Guilt sucks, sure hope he does not blame you for something that does not sound like it was your fault. Hope it works out and he is ok after the surgery. Matt

| The machine did it after he put his hand in a place where it was possible. I cringe at the thought of it happening but if it was me I certainly would not word it that way, even if it was my hand. Sorry for the guys hand, that sux.

they were trying to line the holes up to slide the pin in, I had the point stuck in the ground and was using the controles to move the cylinder, his hand was resting on the bucket and in that spot the cylinder would be if it went to far. I couldn't see and had one guy telling to either go in or out with iit. I feel bad but I was following directions. Normaly I would be the one doing somthing like that but it should have only taken 30 sec to do.

I had an inspector Matt who worked the rails when he was 18 (graveyard shift). I guess in the late fifty's they used a latern when working in the yard. If the lantern was beside the car, you knew somebody was behind it. Well somebody didn't look and backed the engine into the first car, it knocked him down and ran over his leg just under his hip. Your in a dangerous industry bud, accidents will happen no matter how many saftey rules there are. Keep the faith bud, hopefully all will be well. Sean....................................

| Matt, I know you feel bad, but I have worked in a number of situations in diving and salvage where hand signals from the crew were all I had to go by running 100 ton winches and associated salvage gear. Anyone working in that environment knows it's on them to stay clear of the pinch/crush points. Although I know it's a tough spot to be in, I don't think anyone is going to hold you responsible.
