Question for moms
« on: Jul 1st, 2006, 10:26pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

For the past week or so, Marco (now 7 weeks old) has had terrible gas at night. He goes to sleep, but one hour into it he wakes up with loud gurgling in his stomach, and burps and farts then doesn't go back to sleep.

Any ideas? My wife is still strictly breastfeeding.
Thanks!

has your wife figured out what foods make Marco more gassy? It can be different for every kid. For my boys, this one's my third, it seemed to be broccoli, chinese food, and fried things.

Sometimes simply topping him off will resettle Zeke's tummy.

hugs for Marco!

I like the "football hold". It works very well for fussy, gassy and colic-ky babies. Lay him over your forearm, on his tummy. Support his head in the crook of your elbow, with his little face turned out. Use your hand to support his lower body, and let his legs dangle a little. It's like cradling a football in your arm. Hold him, rub his back a little, and repeat....shh shh shh. As long as he's not still hungry, this should help him feel better.

Is it normal for the colic only to happen at night? My wie has been eating pretty much her normal diet. She is a chef and eats very healty. We'll eat bland food today and see how it goes.

Mylicon is part of his diet since about 4 weeks old.

We'll also try the heating pad. The football hold works well, but he won't sleep while held in that position.... When he's hungry, he screams, so that's not it either.

Thanks!

P.S.  All my kids were bottle fed, and didn't get too much gas, so can't help much... Although I would like to second Jonny's suggestion to call the pediatrician.  They may like to see the kid to make sure everything's okay.

When my daughter was two weeks old, she had the same issues.  I used Mylicon drops and the doctor put her on one ounce of pear juice a day.  It worked wonders.

Like the rest I think it is colic. If you dont want to use simethicone drops try using peppermint water. It is an old wives cure. Get either peppermint extract and just a DROP to two ounces of water. Or get some peppermint candy and let it dissolve in the water. Give this mixture to the baby and it will help its stomach. Peppermint calms the stomach. Also have wife stay away from spicy foods and what not.
I know I am not a mom but I have had some expeience with little ones.

Gotta kinda agree with Jonny. When dealing with the wee ones cause the docs know the most and the kiddo cant really tell you what is up so it is hard to actually know what is up.

We have a club!

Call the doctor!

My lil gal goes from curled in a ball relaxed to ridged as can be l;ike a board....

She gurgles and freakin' twitches then sounds like a damn goat when she is gonna let one out.

I feel so bad for her.

Football hold helps as does laying her on her side.
You can also try doing "knee bends" with him.

Bring his knees up to his belly and hold for a little bit.

Belly massages too.

Feel good brother and know you're not alone!

Which encourages the sometimes rapid expelling of flatulence directly into your face. Shocked

Also remember, if you are nursing your infant, what makes you gassy, will make the baby gassy. Also... so stay away from brocoli... hotdogs... cauliflower... stuff that is known to make ya gassy..... I would nix the caffeine too. (coffee)
I remember those days..... One time though we thought my daughter must have appendicitis  because she was screaming so badly, and it was an ear in fection..... call the doctor..... (((((and remember its stressful these new baby days...... NEVER SHAKE A BABY...)))))) God's love to you all   Ree

Sounds a little like colic to me - but check with the doctor first.  One thing I found with my daughter who did, after doctor diagnosis, had colic, was to lay her on her tummy across my thighs while sitting upright in a chair, and gently bounce my knees while rubbing her back.  This really helped to relieve her pain, and believe it or not, she would actually fall asleep sometimes.  There were many evenings where I would have to have my husband cut my meat for me so I could eat my dinner one handed while doing this, but it worked.  Had some long dinners sitting at that table because if she fell asleep, I sure wasn't going to wake her up by moving her too soon.

I recommend calling the doctor and getting Marco in for a quick check.  But, in the meantime, the above method won't hurt, and it might help.  I also used Nani's "football" hold a lot.

Ditto to check with the Doc.

However, Linda had a very good suggestion.  When my little one had gas, I put a hot water bottle - the rubber ones - on my lap covered with a thin blanket (heating pads can get a little hot, and a water bottle is movable and soothing).

Baby face down across lap on top of water bottle, combined with gentle rubbing of the baby's back always did the trick for me.  Luckily, my little one wasn't like that all the time, but it always worked when she was.

I also remember hauling her around the house during her cranky times in one of those baby wraps that allow her to rest on your chest and tummy.  There were many nights we wouldn't have had dinner without me doing that.

Rest assured, she'll get past this.  Unfortunately, someday she'll become a teenager!

Hugs,

Kris

So I called the Doc today  Wink

He says it's normal, to give him milycon, and make sure he's at a 45 degree angle when breastfeeding, to reduce the amount of air he swallows. He also told us to cut his time in the swing, as he's getting addicted to sleepiing in motion

Today so far he has been asleep for almost 2 hrs and not a peep out of him!

I know that when I finally took charge and got over my bit of angst, the baby calmed down substantially.

As far as the swing goes, I figured that one out too.
It's great but she cna't sleep while steady.....started putting her down more in the pack-n-play, crib and bassinette.

MAkes it easier.

......there she goes......diaper change and feeding time......stay strong and enjoy the ri Grinde

Barbara Breast milk is 80% water and totally nursed babies do not need water supplementation. I nursed 3 kids till over a year. I started giving them water at 6 months when starting solids and gave it to them from a cup.

My second child had the colic . I tried every notion, potion old wives, new wives cure and technique known to man including all of the above suggestions and nothing. All I heard for 3 months was screaming when she was up. The doc told me that colic is not a gas thing but rather something to do with circadian rhythm and generally it goes away at 3 months when the baby's time clock sets in. You know what ., he was absolutely right. At 3 months she stopped the screaming and magically a lovely baby appeared. Oh the things we used to do, put her on the dyer, catnip tea, runs around the block. Unfortunately I had to put her in a room and let her keep screaming while I went into my room and cried. I can honestly see how babies get shaken or abused. I was at the edge. The point is to not to feel guilty. It is not your fault.

No honey! Pediatricians now recommend that a baby never be given honey before they are a year old. Honey can carry some pretty scary bacteria for an infant's system.
