Computer spyware question

I'm usually very good about checking for Adware and Spyware on my puter - every couple days usually.
However, it's been about a 2 weeks since I ran my Spybot Search and Destroy. Ran it last night and it came up with about a gizzilion hits. It was able to fix all of them but one that required I reboot - something like "mywebsearch". I rebooted, Spybot ran again and said the problem was fixed.
Now, when I boot up, I get a windows message saying it can't find "mywebsearch.dll."
Any ideas how I can get rid of this windows message? This is very annoying!

Mines doin ODD things and not sure what is goin on......it shut off by itself the other day and restarted and a dialog box said it suffer'd some sort of bad error (and option to send or not send to microsoft what happend) but I lost all my email addresses and favorites. Was it jus a boo-boo glitch ? Half the time I can't get web pages to come up but thought it mite be server problems ? I am connected but can't do squat......alot of this computer stuff is gettin over my head these days. Course I'm short so everything is over MY head Pam

Kris... There's prolly a registry entry trying to call that DLL (or a program that uses that DLL, more than likely, the MyWebSearch toolbar in IE). I suggest, if you know a 'puter geek in your area, ask them to help you find the entries and remove them. Otherwise, maybe one of the 'puter geeks on the board will walk you through the steps over the phone. I'd offer, but I don't have a home phone.
Cootie... I would recommend finding a 'puter geek to format and reinstall your system.
Both... I would recommend switching to a better, more secure, more reliable OS, but I'll let the Linux gurus do that for me.

Go to Start then Run and type in Regedit and click OK
A window will open you want to expand to this path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT||WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\RUN
Then look in the right window for anything with that program name and delete it.
This is every thing that automatically starts when Windows starts up. Be careful this is the brains of Windows so don’t delete anything you are not sure of.
Cootie, sound like your PC created a new profile for you, look under C:\Documents and settings on your PC and see if you log in name is listed twice. If so go to the one that lists you favorites and your documents and copy the folders to the new profile.

Matt... Personally... I would've at least have instructed a user on how to backup the registry before giving instructions on editing it. Plus, that tip only helps if it's a non-system program that loads on startup. Considering that the warning box is complaining about a missing DLL, she may find that the program that is loading that DLL is not named the same as the DLL.
Kris... If you haven't gone tearin' up your registry yet... Here's another, less dangerous method of finding and fixing the registry entries that may be responsible for that warning box... Download HijackThis (http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip)... Run the program, and click "Do a system scan and save logfile" You can either copy and paste the results in an e-mail to me kenn_kurr@verizon.net and I will analize it for you, or there's a website that can auto-analyze it for you at http://www.hijackthis.de/ just copy the results and paste in the input box at the site, or upload the HijackThis log file you created. Don't have HijackThis fix anything until you know what entries should be fixed, or it may remove items that shouldn't be removed.

Kenn, that was why I gave specific walk through instructions and said to look for the same name as the DLL and remove just that entry, witch she did and it fixed the problem.
I have been doing computers for 17 years as a profession and would not tell someone to do something that would brake there system, if I didn’t know what I was talking about, I would not offer suggestions on how to fix computer problems. Don’t think I took offence at your remark, I didn’t, I know there are a lot of people out there that will tell you how to fix your computer because they think they are an expert even though they don’t work on computers for a living, but I do and I am Microsoft certified as well and have been for many years, I just want to help others here that have helped me get through some rough times with this monster and feel giving free tech support is the least I can do to show my appreciation.

Didn't mean to start anything... I just get a chill anytime anyone recommends manually editing the registry to a user. Seen the result of bad registry edits too many times. Although, I guess even one time is too many when ya have to fix it... LOL Doesn't the MCSE recommend backing up the registry before editing it? Mayhaps I'm thinkin' of something else. Glad your advice helped her. Good work!

Ken if you are running XP the restore function under system tools works grate as long as it is turned on. I have used it many times, it resets everything back to what ever date you select, so if you started having problems last Tuesday, you can set the PC to recover the registry and system settings to Monday and the problem should be gone. This is a slick tool as long as it is turned on, anyone running XP you should make sure it is turned on.
