Don't worry ... it's not supposed to hit us !

"Huge asteroid to fly closely past Earth"

"An asteroid possibly as large as a half-mile or more in diameter is rapidly approaching the Earth. There is no need for concern, for no collision is in the offing, but the space rock will make an exceptionally close approach to our planet early on Monday, July 3, passing just beyond the Moon’s average distance from Earth."

Anyone have a telescope ?

I was *just* setting up all the gear anyway, so maybe I'll get a view of it.

For the other astronomy freaks out there, my scope is a 12" Meade LX200.  Suitable as the main scope for any small college or university.  Smiley  It is a bit large for home use, but it's all computerized.  To bad I live right next to the ocean now, where visibility is poor because of persistent fog.

No telescopes here, but there was a book called "The Big Eye", written years and years ago.  About an asteroid about to hit earth, and how the world changed because of it.  Probably published sometime in the 40's.  I read this book in high school and gave an oral book report on it.  My classmates were enthralled, I didn't tell the ending, 7 classmates borrowed my copy of the book over the next few weeks, and I got an A.

About one year ago, I was thinking about this book, did a google and found a copy (it's out of print), and read it again.  It's still as it was 40 years ago.

Thanks. I love this stuff too.

We have a good local private observatory here. Finally, here's something for our paper....they better print it.

Man, that scope had to set you back half a ten spot. Shocked With that size of a refractor and a good GPS and computer you should be able to get a good look at it as long as the fog stays out.

For everyone else...don't get too excited and stay up all night. It's too small for the naked eye and will be going too fast to see with binoculars or a regular small reflector scope. Log onto www.space.com and they'll probably show it.
