Breathe....Please read this!

Hey folks,

Don't do me the favor by reading this - do yourselves a favor and read the following:

http://neonursechic.blogspot.com/2006/06/breathe.html

This afternoon, I took a nap on my couch and my kitten was running around.  He somehow turned on the knob for the stove burner and carbon monoxide gas began leaking into my apartment.  I awoke later, dizzy, rolled over.  Then a few minutes later, I was concerned about the smell and then realized what had happened.  I had a terrible headache, was very dizzy and nauseous, and my vision was blurry.  I was so dizzy that I eventually did fall back to sleep without even telling anyone what had happened because I felt disoriented.  I had gotten myself up to turn off the stove and open the window.

I have a CO detector and it didn't go off, so the CO amount obviously hadn't hit the level the detector needs, but it was definitely causing me to be a little disoriented to the point where if the detector had gone off, I might not have even woken up to hear it at the state I was in.

Anyways, please read the post - it's a warning.  Be safe...  Thank God angels were watching out for me this afternoon, or I may not be here now to tell the story...

Luv,
Carrie

Lizzie,

Was the burner lite? If so then there should have been little CO unless your stove is bad. If it wasn't lite then you was breathing natural gas, which they add the smell to because like CO it has none. Your CO detector will not detect natural gas ( methane ) or Propane ( which us non city people use. You need to buy a gas detector for this. People with no sense of smell who use gas in their house definitely need one.

Good advice.  It wasn't lit...you have to hold the knob in the lite position in order for it to be lit, so if you just knock it, it leaks gas.  That's exactly what it was.   I'll look into buying a detector for that, too.  Thanks!

Wow, that was a close one Carrie.  I'm glad that everything worked out.
I dont know much about this stuff, but I think that the gas inhalation is just as bad as the CO2 or carbon monoxide.  In addition, i think the risk of it catching fire is very great.

I just heard on the news like 3 days ago about a dog that was home alone and somehow turned the stove on and the house burned pretty bad.

Glad you are ok.

Lizzie,

Sounds like you need some child proof knob covers for your stove.

Carrie,

I'm so glad that you're safe! Your guardian angels were there, thank goodness.
Some kitten you've got...

Glad you are OK.  If you ever smell strong gas in the house DO NOT TOUCH ANY APPLIANCES OR SWITCHES!  Open a window and get out and away from the house.  Call the gas company.

Strong gas in the house is like a bomb ready to go off.  1 spark from a light switch or motor can ignite it.  Even your refridge turning on can do it.  I saw what happened to a house once.  Hot water heater ignited a gas leak and the explosion was so strong it took out windows 3 houses away.    It even cracked the foundation of the house the blew.

You mean I could have gone splat????

I don't know why, but that is cracking me up for some reason.  Maybe the gas leak killed a few more brain cells than I thought...  I know...that's not really funny, but for some reason, right now it is!

He was more lethargic than usual, but I woke him up and he did come back to normal after the window was open for a bit, too.

You have to push the knob in and turn it for the gas to even come on.

Actually mine seems to be flimsier than that.  Case in point is that there have been times when I've reached for something in the cabinets above the microwave (which is directly above the stove) and hit the knob with my hip, turning it on.

You sound  like my psychiatrist, who, after I told this story today said, "Your cat?"  and looked at me like I was really saying I did it but blamed it on the cat...errr.....no...  LOL

Dammmmm......you need a new stove dear.......cuz if the kitty did it once he just mite do it again.....by accident of course !! When we moved here they had a small gas tank in the cupboard like ya use with a grill and it leaked all the time.......freaked me out !!!! What a rinky dink setup it was tho and the burners would also come on if ya bumped them. I couldn't wait to get rid of that stove !! Unfortunetly stoves are not cheap. Be careful........it's a gas Pam
