JOHN GLENN SAID

Now I have not checked the facts on this but found it to be interesting, so thought I would post it for you to read. JOHN GLENN SAID Things that make you think a little: There were 39 combat related killings in Iraq in January. In the fair city of Detroit there were 35 murders in the month of January. That's just one American city, about as deadly as the entire war-torn country of Iraq. When some claim that President Bush shouldn't have started this war, state the following: a. FDR led us into World War II. b. Germany never attacked us; Japan did. >From 1941-1945, 450,000 lives were lost ... an average of 112,500 per year. c. Truman finished that war and started one in Korea. North Korea never attacked us .. >From 1950-1953, 55,000 lives were lost ... an average of 18,334 per year. d John F. Kennedy started the Vietnam conflict in 1962. Vietnam never attacked us. e. Johnson turned Vietnam into a quagmire. >From 1965-1975, 58,000 lives were lost .. an average of 5,800 per year. f. Clinton went to war in Bosnia without UN or French consent. Bosnia never attacked us. He was offered Osama bin Laden's head on a platter three times by Sudan and did nothing. Osama has attacked us on multiple occasions. g. In the years since terrorists attacked us , President Bush has liberated two countries, crushed the Taliban, crippled al-Qaida, put nuclear inspectors in Libya , Iran, and, North Korea without firing a shot, and captured a terrorist who slaughtered 300,000 of his own people. The Democrats are complaining about how long the war is taking. But It took less time to take Iraq than it took Janet Reno to take the Branch Davidian compound. That was a 51-day operation.. We've been looking for evidence for chemical weapons in Iraq for less time than it took Hillary Clinton to find the Rose Law Firm billing records. It took less time for the 3rd Infantry Division and the Marines to destroy the Medina Republican Guard than it took Ted Kennedy to call the police after his Oldsmobile sank at Chappaquiddick. It took less time to take Iraq than it took to count the votes in Florida!!!! Our Commander-In-Chief is doing a GREAT JOB! The Military morale is high! The biased media hopes we are too ignorant to realize the facts But Wait . There's more! JOHN GLENN (ON THE SENATE FLOOR) Mon, 26 Jan 2004 11:13 Some people still don't understand why military personnel do what they do for a living. This exchange between Senators John Glenn and Senator Howard Metzenbaum is worth reading. Not only is it a pretty impressive impromptu speech, but it's also a good example of one man's explanation of why men and women in the armed services do what they do for a living. This IS a typical, though sad, example of what some who have never served think of the military. Senator Metzenbaum (speaking to Senator Glenn): "How can you run for Senate when you've never held a real job?" Senator Glenn (D-Ohio): "I served 23 years in the United States Marine Corps. I served through two wars. I flew 149 missions. My plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire on 12 different occasion s. I was in the space program. It wasn't my checkbook, Howard; it was my life on the line. It was not a nine-to-five job, where I took time off to take the daily cash receipts to the bank." "I ask you to go with me ... as I went the other day... to a veteran's hospital and look those men ... with their mangled bodies . in the eye, and tell THEM they didn't hold a job! You go with me to the Space Program at NASA and go, as I have gone, to the widows and Orphans of Ed White, Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee... and you look those kids in the eye and tell them that their DADS didn't hold a job. You go with me on Memorial Day and you stand in Arlington National Cemetery, where I have more friends buried than I'd like to remember, and you watch those waving flags. You stand there, and you think about this nation, and you tell ME that those people didn't have a job? What about you?" For those who d on't remember .. During W.W.II, Howard Metzenbaum was an attorney representing the Communist Party in the USA. Now he's a Senator! If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you are reading it in English thank a Veteran.

From snopes.com Claim: Senate candidate John Glenn delivered a stinging rebuke to a challenger who accused him of never having held a job. Status: True. Example: [Collected on the Internet, 2000] Origins: The item quoted above is indeed a relatively faithful transcript of candidate John Glenn's remarks during a 1974 debate with Howard Metzenbaum for the Democratic nomination to a U.S. Senate seat, but the circumstances that prompted Glenn's words were not quite as they're made out to be here.

One correction: d: Kennedy did NOT start the war in Viet Nam In 1956 Eisenhower PROMISED troops to Viet Nam should they need them. I don't think anyone could forsee what that could lead to, but put the BLAME where it belongs. I salute all those in the military (having been a military wife I do understand that the troops WORK). But Iraq never attacked us either.... We're loosing American lives in Iraq for WHAT? To say we freed a country that isn't going to change a darn thing after we're gone. Need to study the mid-east a little on that one. Every country over there is under a dictatorship and going to stay that way. The people are NOT going to change and we can't make them. And while I'm on my rant. Hilter was a threat to the world. Had he successfully taken over Europe - who would have been next? Hussein wasn't even a close second to Hilter. End of rant... Hugs BD

| No need for blame at all. Nam was a just war fought for just reasons. Too bad the politicians were allowed to run the war. Had it been left to the Generals and Admirals and troops, you'ld be able to vacation on the beaches of the American colony of South Viet Nam today!

As far as who started the war in Nam I think we need to look at France. We just wanted it to be communist free. We need to have a democracy and stability in Iraq and Saddam had to go. War sucks and thats the truth but sometimes it has to be done. My ship replaced the USS Stark back in the late 80's and tho I know it has nothing to do with whats going on today I bet there's 37 souls who are looking down at us with great big smiles. Jeff. I remember well the debate between Glenn and Metzenbaum, from Ohio. I had to make a decision as to which candidate I would cast my precious ballot for. Glenn, of course. I thought he was an honest man then, and I believe he still is. He served his country during wartime, during space exploration. I never did find out exactly what Metzenbaum did for a living, but I didn't care at vote time - Glenn had my vote. Sandy

AND COLIN POWELL SAID ...

"We must not, for example, send military forces into a crisis with an unclear mission they cannot accomplish -such as we did when we sent the U.S. Marines into Lebanon in 1983. We inserted those proud warriors into the middle of a five-faction civil war complete with terrorists, hostage-takers, and a dozen spies in every camp, and said, 'Gentlemen, be a buffer.' The results were 241 Marines and Navy personnel killed and a U.S. withdrawal from the troubled area." 1) Was the war a last resort? 2) Did it reflect a well-defined national interest and enjoy strong public support? 3) Was there a conistent use of overwhelming force? 4) Is there a clear exit strategy? And why did Powell resign right after the election?

The Germans did mess us up in the Atlantic before December 7th. Hitler wasn't very happy with us and sunk some stuff out there. we did bait him though. The thing is that on the 9th, I believe, Hitler declared war on us first. Not exactly a clever move for the self-proclaimed strategist. Iraq ain't the same animal. The thing is though that we were attacked by psychos hanging out in Kabul. The psychos in Teheran waited until we showed up. It's not so much as cultural now as it is that invading Islam kinda ticks them off. This doesn't sound like the John Glenn I know. It looks like a construct of a string of statements over time and carefully selected some bubba blogger. Charlie

This is what they say was John's side of the conversation: This exchange between Senators Glenn and Metzenbaum is worth reading. Pretty impressive impromptu speech! Next time someone accuses you or any veteran of not having a "job" because you're in the military, quote Sen Glenn. ________________________________________ Howard Metzenbaum to John Glenn: Metzenbaum: "How can you run for Senate when you've never held a 'job'?" Glenn: "I served 23 years in the United States Marine Corps. I was through two wars. I flew 149 missions. My plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire on 12 different occasions. "I was in the space program. It wasn't my checkbook, it was my life that was on the line. This was not a 9-to-5 job where I took time off to take the daily cash receipts to the bank. "I ask you to go with me, as I went the other day to a Veterans Hospital, and look those men with their mangled bodies in the eye and tell them they didn't hold a job. "You go with me to any Gold Star mother, and you look her in the eye and tell her that her son did not hold a job. "You go with me to the space program, and you go as I have gone to the widows and the orphans of Ed White and Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee, and you look those kids in the eye and tell them that their dad didn't hold a job. "You go with me on Memorial Day coming up, and you stand on Arlington National Cemetery — where I have more friends than I like to remember — and you watch those waving flags, and you stand there, and you think about this nation, and you tell me that those people didn't have a job. "I tell you, Howard Metzenbaum, you should be on your knees every day of your life thanking God that there were some men — SOME MEN — who held a job. And they required a dedication to purpose and a love of country and a dedication to duty that was more important than life itself. "And their self-sacrifice is what has made this country possible. "I HAVE HELD A JOB, HOWARD!" http://www.snopes.com/politics/quotes/glenn.asp
