I want to step on it, stomp it, burn it, then toss it out the window We have 2 accounts on this PC. My 'side' works fine My son's side is screwed! It won't do anything at all. We cannot access any programs. It just freezes up. Had to hard re-boot twice. WTH ?? Any advice before I start transfering files to disc and delete his account ? I'd like to slap Mr. Gates in his mouth right about now What was he thinking ?? An etch-a-scetch would be more reliable !! UNsolved

Copy the My Documents folder, then delete the profile and create a new profile. Probably an error in the registry for that profile, or he fucked something up, but if it's just an error with that one profile, then get rid of it. The only files that might be lost is his My Documents folder, but you should be given an option to backup the user's files prior to deleting the profile anyways. PFDAN............................................................ ShadowLord P.S. You may also want to run a virus scan and spyware cleaner too... Just in case. SL

| Yes, he's downloading music He say he scans everything. He also said he never had a virus warning from Nortons Internet Security 06'. Going to fix it today. Probably going to have to do what ShadowLord suggested. UNsolved

Don't know if it means anything but over on your Zarqawi Killed thread I get a box that reads 'Connecting to tk1.storage.msn.com' If I try to post to it I get the same message. Might mean something, I don’t know. That box did not come up on this thread. Did you change computers?

I have found PrevX1 to be the best spyware program out there. Picked up stuff no others could. Not only scans and deletes but also sets up a firewall. 1 year free trial.

That's your problem... You trust Norton... I stopped trusting Norton over a year ago when it missed a virus, and it took me a whole hour to get rid of it... Took me a whole day to completely get rid of Norton... Good luck! PFDAN......................................................... ShadowLord

no Bob, I didn't change computers. I assure you I have nothing to do with that. Sounds like your trying to log into a 'secure' server. I typed in that addy and I get a security warning saying that the certificate is invalid / outdated. Better ask someone else who might be able to provide you with some answers. Sorry I can't help ya. Ad-Aware SE is a good one but there is no software that can clean all the crap spyware off your system. You need to run two or three to really get it clean. Here are my recommendations for getting your system running as fast as it did when you first got it. Go to Download.com and first get the Ad-Aware SE then Bet SpyBot they are both free just make sure you do the updates before running them to be sure they are looking for all the latest spyware. Once you have done that go to TrendMicro.com and run there free Virus/Spyware program and that should get you as clean as you can get. I run these all the time on my users computers and I am an IT manager. The other thing I would do that most people don’t ever do is a defrag on the hard drive this will also make the system faster if it is badly fragmented. If you do not know how to run it it is under Accessories then System Tools. If you have any questions feel free to IM me and I would be glad to help out. Matt

Sounds like malware of which spyware/adware is the most prevalent now. Microsoft recommends a clean reinstall to get rid of malware. Once you do that make sure users are not running as admin/root, use any browser than IE, and never install any untrusted software. Open source software can be safer because there are many eyes making sure nothing gets slipped in. After you download your programs, always check the MD5SUMs, preferably ones from another mirror before installing. At your next reinstall you may want to also install Linux and dual boot Microsoft windows and Linux. I recommend Ubuntu Linux 6.06. It is free to download or order free Cd's, or I can send it to you. Opus is right about Linux it is more resistant to these types of problems but it is not for everyone and you may have hardware problems with divers and also applications. He is defiantly right about using a different browser other then Microsoft Internet Explorer, you can down load Mozilla Firefox it is a free browser and does not support activeX and that is what most spyware takes advantage of to infect your system. The down side is not all web pages will display correctly with Firefox so when you hit one of those sites you may need to use IE to access it.

If you MUST use Microsoft: Get rid of Norton as of yesterday. go to http://avast.com and use their free home edition. It is far superior. Get and run Adaware. Delete your son's account, and create a new one. Defrag your hard drive. Go to http://www.opera.com and download their web browser. Just about the best out there. If you want to just not have these problems again and still have fun with your computer. I would suggest the Fedora Core 5 distribution of Linux. You can find it at http://fedora.redhat.com there are others out there, but I happen to like Fedora. Feel free to IM or e-mail me if there is anything you think I can help with. I have 37 years of experience with these things, on and off.

There are addons for Firefox that allows you to open a tab rendered with MSIE in Firefox. Firefox has lots and lots of addons More and more sites that used to be IE only are waking up to Firefox, so IE is becoming less necessary. Just don't install the Mozilla ActiveX plugin... Way bad idea. I'd recommend Avast too... They also have a Linux verison, in case you decide to install OpenSuSE 10.1... Ubuntu 6.06 ain't bad either. SuSE has a pretty good deal going with YAST. Good competition for app-get and RPM. Is there a Mandriva user out there that thinks its worthwile? Isn't Ubuntu based on Debian and an older Linux Kernel Paul? Anyway if you want to go to a better system UNsolved, there is a herd of Alpha Geeks here to give you a hand. After all Star Wars, Shrek and a few other movies were done with Linux. Microsoft.com is hosted by Linux. This website is hosted by Linux. The server's name is Conepuppy Ah nevermind I'm starting to evangilize.

| Ubuntu 6.06 LTS ( long term support 3 years desktop, 5 years server) Kernel 2.6.15 Gnome 2.14 Ubuntu is based on Debian unstable "Sid", current release is "Sarge", current testing is "Etch" ( toy story characters) Ubuntu 6.06 ( dapper drake) was delayed 6 weeks for polishing. Microsoft Windows Vista is 3+ years delayed Most of the apps were polished and integrated with Ubuntu. Debian and Ubuntu repositories are not interchangeable. Opus/Paul
