Since I am just beginning, I am actually doing my brother-in-law's graduation party for nothing. After it's finished (before the party starts), I'll be taking photographs for my portfolio and will also have a sign and my business cards next to the decor. (There will be about 15 floating centerpieces, 2 columns and a string of pearls arch) I want to gauge peoples reactions at the party.
I am not too concerned with advertising right away, as I want to keep it small for as long as possible. I am not looking to make a ton of money, just some extra cash and have fun doing it. The beginning of next week I am off to the courthouse to apply for my tax ID#.
Eventually I will put an ad in the Buyer's Guide, but for now I'm just getting my feet wet. As you know, balloon decorators in this area are rare (I think maybe 1?). I heard from my neighbor lady that JC Penny's in Wausau has some balloon decor in front of their store, and she didn't know who did it, but I hope it's still there when I go to Wausau next week.
This is the 1st time in my life I feel like I've embarked on something that will succeed.

Melly! WORD OF MOUTH! Best advertising you can have! I did 12 yrs of freelance floristry. I did parties and weddings exclusively (personally balloons give me the willies). I found each successful wedding led to more-and my clients were the ones who told people.

That is exactly what I'm counting on Cathi. At this point, I really don't feel the need to advertise, nor do I think I will ever need to. Just the fact there arn't any advertising balloon decorators around here (why do balloons give you the willies? lol) shows me there's a niche.
