Suitcase Loss (but now found!!) - another saga!

I know I've shared a few of the things going on in my life these days and most of it is pretty negative. However, this isn't even really half of all that actually has been happening or going on - and we all have things like that in our lives, so I'm not pretending I have it worse than anyone else - but it just seems like there have been an abnormally large amount of bad things going on in my life lately! So anyways...I was happy and relieved today because the flight here was perfectly on time, everyone was pleasant, the plane even arrived to Atlanta a half hour early, so I had 2 hours between connections. Everything was great from start until..... Baggage claim... My suitcase didn't show up. I was 2 hours early for my flight from Philly to Atlanta and then had 2 hours between connections from Atlanta to Sarasota. So there really was no opportunity for missing the flight due to timing. I brought enough medication to get through the next few days, but I have about 10 bottles of medication that are on the plane - I'm trying not to think about the fact that if the bag is lost for good, I won't be able to get some of those meds because insurance won't pay for them and most doctors won't rewrite prescriptions for meds that are "lost" since so many patients say that as an excuse. The airlines won't cover it because they advise not to pack meds in the checked luggage - the thing is, I brought the meds I need in pill cases, but I couldn't fit about 10 pill bottles in the carry-on bag. I know the rest of the stuff really is material, but I have 3 pairs of shoes in there - one of which I just bought. Plus I recently went shopping for the first time in a year for new clothes, and I really spent the edge of my budget to get a few new nice things, and they're all in the suitcase. My birthday present from my mom last December was a new hair straightener - high end - and it's in the suitcase. Along with 3 swimsuits, 2 pairs of goggles, jewelry, my watch I wear to work, and several other things. And worse yet, my grandfather keeps reminding me about my uncle's lost suitcase one time with 2 new suits and a new overcoat and the suitcase was never recovered. So this keeps making me more and more anxious.... AHHHHHhhhhhhhhhh somebody please reassure me that my suitcase will show up! I arrived on an earlier flight today so I could get as much beach time as possible, but then all my stuff is in the suitcase so I couldn't go to the beach really at all - just took a 20 minute walk with my grandfather. Sorry to vent/rant/etc - my anxiety and frustration is peaking to the point where I literally feel like I'm going to throw up even though I know I just need to stay calm and it will probably show up....arg............. Carrie

It probably got lifted by the honest TSA inspectors because they spotted pills in it, they've got sharp eyes for certain things of personal interest. On a connection flight, who can tell exactly where it went missing. Your script pills will be missing, things of value and some underwear. Make a report and then call the airline, they'll have a luggage resolution department, but someone's going to cover their tracks sending it on a roundabout circuit of wrong turns through lots of hands. Or they could deliver intact to your house. Sorry Liz, with the items you listed there's a lot of temptation for a checked-in piece.

Sure Carrie, it showing up again as simply being misdirected luggage is always a good possibility. Happens everyday. The contents can sway the odds of being misdirected though. Keep on the airlines with your claim, take names and check back. A phone call out of nowhere will come about it.

Carrie- It will probably show up. Bug the airline and tell them there were needed perscription meds in the luggage. (hope the meds were in the script vials) 9/10 times stuff shows up the next day. Always take valuables and meds on carry-on. Rule #1 of travel. Always have perscription meds in origional vials and carry a copy of the script if possible. -P.

A few years ago I flew from Madison WI through Chicago IL to get to Montaray CA for a job interview. All my meds pluss all my interview clothes were in it. It sucked! I paniced. My hubby had it together. We informed the airline in writting that it was lost and its description and where we were staying at. We immediatly left and went to kmart. I bought a swim suit, a couple of suits and a couple of skirts and blouses. Went back to the hotel and an hr latter my luggage showed up at my hotel!! So I returned all my stuff back to kmart since I had my reciept. I had an excellant job interview. No one was the wiser as to what I had gone through and I was offered the job. I am so glad that they not only paid for my airfair but for my husbands airfair as well. I would have lost it without him. It will work out ok Carrie.

Carrie, If its any comfort, your luggage is seeing more of the United States than you. Perhaps when you are reunited it will tell you wonderful stories...seriously-bug the airlines, make sure they know there are important medical supplies in there and don't give up. Kathy

Carrie, call the airline and find out when their next flight is from the destination you flew from to where you arrived without it. It would be on the next plane if left behind. If it went to another city, it will have to work it's way back to where you are at. As Paul98 mentioned, this is the usual reason for the next day. Sarasota may have limited flights this time of year north/south on your airline. I apologize for the harsh view Carrie, I work customer relations for an airline and don't want to BS you, I've come across checked-in meds and jewelry as items of suspect handling.

Most luggage is found. Call them up now and see if they have a track on the suitcase. When they have lost mine, I have always got it back within 48 hours. They should be able to track it and let you know where it is. Did they offer you toiletries? If so, take them. It is a very nice little kit and very useful when traveling. Make sure they deliver it to you WHEREVER you are. They had to travel 45 miles to deliver mine and they didn't blink an eye. YOU SHOULD GET IT BACK. Relax and make sure they deliver it asap!!

I know how you feel. I lost mine on the way to Dallas last year. I got it back in September after I had written off its contents. I had to get some Dallas quack to write me a script for a few days. His office sent me a threatening letter along with their first request which was three months late so I have been reluctant to pay. I sent a few bucks and a letter explaining what courtesy was. Anyway; you can get new prescriptions. I've had to a couple of times. All I tell them and my HMO is that it's either some anti-convulsants now or you can pay for my hospital stays when I fall down the stairs or get run over. Take your pick. Hold on kid. It's more than likely that you'll get it back soon. Charlie

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. 3 more flights have come in from Atlanta to Sarasota on Delta, but no suitcase yet. I've called them twice, explained the med stuff and need for the suitcase, and they were very apologetic on the phone, but unfortunately an apology doesn't get my stuff back. Here's the deal with the meds in the suitcase... I divvied up my pills into 6 days worth of daily pill cases, and I asked my mom if she thought it would be problematic for me to put the rest of the pill bottles in the suitcase because there are times when I have problems with carry-on and running short on meds, and frankly I always feel like it's best if I have them in 2 places since without them, I'm pretty much toast. She thought it would be fine to put the remaining pill bottles in the suitcase. I did keep my triptans with my carry-on and also one other med. However, that still leaves about 10 bottles in the other bag... I gotta say, it's hard to imagine someone wanting to steal beta blockers and reflux meds... LMAO At least I have a 6 days supply that will get me through the vacation, and I guess I'll figure it out from there. The airlines can tell me that my bag was checked to begin with, but after that, they have absolutely no clue where it is. It does have a baggage claim ID on it that they use to search for it...and this is what they will scan once the bag turns up somewhere. I'm a little surprised it hasn't been riding around a baggage belt in circles and they haven't scanned it yet, though! They did check the list of 27 unclaimed bags in Philly, about 125 unclaimed bags in Atlanta, and the unclaimed bags in Tampa since the plane from Philly to Atlanta had a final destination of Tampa. The next flight in will be at around 10:30am tomorrow. My grandma took me to the drugstore tonight to get a few things. She had a few things here I could use as well. I look like a 3 year old playing dressup because I have on her nightgown...haha Tomorrow morning, she's going to take me to get a new swim suit and a few other essentials. The other downside is that my only credit card is no good because there was a bit of an issue and I had to have the number changed, and the new card didn't arrive before I left to come here. I can't just deplete my checking account to buy all new stuff, so my grandma said she would help me out with the clothing until my suitcase turns up. I will definitely pay her back for it once I can.... Ugh... My best friend called me tonight because I text messaged her while at dinner. I was pretty upset about this and just felt like it was one more thing on top of everything else, and I was having a hard time holding back the tears. My mom basically just said, "There are worse problems and at least you got there. Deal with it." She kinda didn't understand when I said it's been very hard for me to hold it together lately and I break down in tears over practically everything. Stupid depression...... Thanks for listening. I really do refuse to let this ruin my entire trip. I'm going to get what I need tomorrow and just sit out at the beach and read my book or something. I'm still on vacation in a beautiful place. I can't let this upset me all week. I just have my fingers crossed that it really will turn up sometime tomorrow morning....!!! Carrie

| That's the spirit Girl! I'm really sorry this happened but luggage more often than not do turn up again. My husband travels every month and he's got the worst luck with luggage. I now pack 2 suitcases, just in-case but in the 9 instances his luggage got lost(the trip to America as well ), it was retrieved within 48 hours. Only once, did it take 2 weeks, to get a very battered suitcase with half its contents back. There is a very good chance that you will get your stuff back, it most probably is playing Ring-around-the-Rosie on its own little holiday.

It is time to turn up the heat on the airline. Call them again and speak to a supervisor or get their main number and talk to a bigwig. Turn the heat up. Tell them that this is not just lost luggage anymore but an airline not even doing the bare minimum to assure delivery of your luggage. Make sure you give them any identifying information on your bag. Explain that there is time sensative materials in the bag and that you need a quick reply. If it is a toll free number, tell him/her you are willing to hold while they find out. Depression stinks, BTW. If you are on a med like Wellbutrin, you shouldn't have a problem getting replacements. What airline is this, BTW?

They did, in fact, finally locate it!!! I called the airlines (Delta) one more time this morning, and after I entered the service number I'd been supplied with yesterday, I was holding my breath waiting to hear the automated voice tell me that "We're sorry. We have no updates on this bag..." But - it said, "We have located your bag, and we are scheduling it to arrive on a flight to Sarasota, Florida." So I called the number again to talk to a human, and she told me that it will be arriving to Sarasota tonight on a flight that gets in at 6:33pm. I checked the info, and the flight is from Atlanta - still not sure if that's where they found my luggage or if it got rerouted through Atlanta after taking quite a journey. If I don't hear from the airport for awhile, I'll give them a call about them bringing the bag out here to my grandparents' place. They have my phone number and the address here. The woman on the phone was very apologetic, but at that point, I was so ecstatic that my bag had been found that I was hardly upset! Just overjoyed and relieved... At any rate, I'd called them before I went to the store to purchase a new bathing suit to replace mine, and I didn't want to lose another entire day on the beach, so my grandma and I went to a discount swimwear place, and I found a cute suit! That and the outfit I arrived in are my only clothing possessions that I have with me right now, so even though I've been up from the beach for an hour and a half, I still have on the suit and a coverup my grandma lent me. Instead, today I bought the suit, then went to the beach to sit and enjoy the weather with my grandfather, then we went for a swim in the gulf, then a short walk, and sat down on the beach to nearly finish my book. Finally just finished it and am waiting to see a beautiful sunset. I did finally find my peace. Depression has really sucked the life out of me lately, and yesterday even though my day started off happily, I felt the same negativity and depression that I haven't been able to escape. But just today I took a deep breath and smiled inside. I'll check the contents of the suitcase once it gets here to let ya know if I actually have all my meds still in it. Frankly, I can't complain about Delta because the flight experience was wonderful until I tried to pick up my suitcase in baggage claim, and everyone I've spoken to has been very polite...but I'm really just quite happy the bag has been found! Hugz, Carrie

Hey Carrie, Glad for you that it was found today. Atlanta is one of the biggest airports with many connections from there and a few items misrouted. Things got better since the first few years of inspections but still, keep certain things close to you. Your first post rang bells that were familiar due to contents but the circumstances from the "unresolved" pile forwarded 9-5 that still can entail, should have been spared by me. Your diligence and attitude are really stupendous.

Could have been they didn't load it on purpose due to aircraft weight and just called it "lost". I had that happen coming back from DavCon in January. They delivered it to my home the next day. Bill
