Today is the commemoration of the assault that broke the grip of Nazi Germany on Europe. D-Day is not *just* an American holiday, it is also a holiday that is recognized in many European countries.
On D-Day, the Allies landed around 156,000 troops in Normandy. The American forces landed numbered 73,000: 23,250 on Utah Beach, 34,250 on Omaha Beach, and 15,500 airborne troops. In the British and Canadian sector, 83,115 troops were landed (61,715 of them British): 24,970 on Gold Beach, 21,400 on Juno Beach, 28,845 on Sword Beach, and 7900 airborne troops.
Thanks, to PL259's daddy (who was in the force that landed on Omaha beach) and others like him, the Hitler's grip was broken on Europe and the tide began to turn.

Thanks, 'darlin. Had many family memebers who went over and didn't come back, in both theaters. The only way to never have a repeat is to never forget.

After looking at the pics from that era my father left me all i like to say :
" ITS TIME TO FORGIVE BUT NEVER FORGET "
Even today its hard for some to forgive the germans.Even those that is born 30-40 years after the war stopped
I think thats a shame,a totally inocent generation is "paying"for what their grandparents did.
Have to admitt even after looking at some of the pics i get hurt somehow

Actually, Norwegians have a hell of a lot to bitch about when it comes to the Nazis. It's helpful for me to think of the Nazis as separate. It misses the mark but it is helpful.

My dad was there. He never talked much about the war, but years later I received this package of V-mails that he had sent to some friends in California. It was like meeting my dad for the first time-war was and is hell. He survived-many didn't. We wouldn't be having this conversation if they hadn't made those sacrifices. There are some things worth killing, and dieing for.

Yes, if we hadn't won, we'd all be speaking German and following Nazi teachings. Sad thing is, we are losing our WW II veterans at an astonishing rate now. If we do not keep this memory alive, our grandkids won't have a clue. WW II was a valuable lesson and I'm afraid if the younger generations forget why it happened, it will happen again.
