True facts....

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE
1930s 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's !!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they
carried us.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, our baby cribs were covered with bright colored
Lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we
rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took
Hitchhiking.

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE
actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank soda pop with sugar in it, but
we weren't overweight because

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back
when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down
the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the
bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Ninten do's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no
99 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no surround sound, no cell
phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat
rooms..........WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no
lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays,
made up games with sticks and tennis balls and although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them!

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't
had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They
actually sided with the law!

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers
and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned

HOW TO
DEAL WITH IT ALL!

And YOU are one of them! CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as
kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good.

and while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?!

How true it all is.  A couple that were forgotten, the slats in the crib were big enough that if you really wanted to, you could stick your head through them.   Now that we are in the market for a crib you have to measure so a soda can doesn't fit through the slats...sheesh... Roll Eyes
Kids sat in the "way back" of the station wagon, no seatbelts, facing backward and waving to people behind us.  And usually, the people in the other cars waved back!  See someone wave to a kid today...that is rare!

Funny how we survived isn't it.  I sent it on to my children and a few other people born in that time  frame.  Of course, people and the world were different then.  I hate when I feel like I have to watch my grandchildren go across the street to play with a friend and make sure that they are not nabbed in the process.  Or when they want to ride their bikes and grandmama's following along in the golf cart.

My friends and I used  to get on a city bus when we were 8 & 9 years old and go down town playing "grown up".  And Halloween------forget about it.  Gone for hours, as far as we could stand to walk, with as much stuff as we could carry.  Sometimes making more than one trip.  It's a shame that children now can't have that same freedom.

To heck with that.  I used to just lay on my belly on the sidewalk and suck on the neighbors lawn sprinkler.  Sometimes had to spit out the first mouthful because of earwigs but after that it was good to go.

I remember falling asleep on the backseat once and all of a sudden I slammed into the backs of the front seats and ended up on the floor.  Mom almost hit a deer. Grin

I always had fun riding in the back of my dad's Toyota pickup, that had a topper, with my cousin for the 4 hour drive up north to fish.  We'd be on a comforter, have a cooler of chips and junkfood, listened to the radio as loud as we wanted and would wave to people as dad passed them, LOL.

But that was before the goverment decided we weren't doing things right and began to change things. Gosh I miss those "old" days and the freedoms.

One thing I remember is a woman in our town with 5 kids. After church one Sunday she yelled at the kids to get in the car, counted heads and drove home. When she got lunch on the table she called the kids in to eat and found out that two of those kids weren't hers and hers went home with someone else. By nightfall all the kids were in the right homes and we still haven't let Joyce live that one down. (The problem was solved easily - she called another woman who had 5 kids and sure nuff - )

Me too, exactly.

From a guy who actually blew his Little League tryouts because his number was too high--only the first 150 numbers were considered, I did or experienced just about everything on the list.

Got pissed on by toads I carried in my pocket, bounced around in my dad's pickup, regularly, and put barrel bombs and cherry bombs in our burn barrel, and here I am. Of course I have seizures and had clusters....

We had a wonderful time.

(by the way, let your kids have some fun. Fewer kids are abused, kidnapped or subject to crime than in the early 1970s. It's only TV that makes us shudder in our boots) The crime rate is way down but that doesn't make good TV.

Love it!

Just reading that brought back a lot of memories, including:
on winter nights, my friends and I, aged 7 and up, walked for a mile in the dark with ice skates over our shoulders until we came to the lake.

There we skated and skated, half frozen but loving it.  On the best nights, somebody's father or big brother would appear and light a big bonfire.

Eventually we walked back home in the dark, wet, cold and entirely happy.

Also: before we had any air conditioning, we slept outside (or rested, anyway) when the heat was unbearable.

Nobody locked the door, even at night.

What a different world!!
