Anyone else? ...

Hey All,
Okay, just doing my "homework" and practicing typing to help keep my motor neurons and muscles keep working together, so I thought I'd see if I was alone in a certain area? If you could pick a song that most resembled your life and how much you feel you could have written it yourself, what would it be? I used to do a lot of writing and was almost somewhat pissed that Rodger Hodgson of Supertramp already wrote my life and views as if he'd lived it and I couldn't improve on it, so no need left to ever write my own. Anyone else have that one song they feel the same about?

The Logical Song

When I was young it seemed that life was so wonderful
a miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical.
And all the birds in the trees, we'll they'd be singing so happily,
joyfully, playfully watching me.
But then they sent me away to teach me how to sensible,
logical, responsible, practical.
And they showed a me world where I could be so dependable,
clinical, intellectual, cynical.

There are times when all the world's asleep,
the questions run so deep
for such a simple man.
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned
I know it sounds absurd
but please tell me who I am.

Now watch what you say or they'll be calling you a radical,
liberal, fanatical, criminal.
Won't you sign up your name, we'd like to feel you're
acceptable,responsible, presentable, a vegetable!

There are times when all the worlds asleep,
the questions run so deep
for such a simple man.
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned
I know it sounds absurd
but please tell me who I am ... who I am ... who I am?

(Hits home so closely with my youth and then many years in "Juvy" in the first part, then again in the next verse my time in the military. The chorus is basically an everyday/night feeling. Have a song that hits so close to home with you?)

You put your right foot in, you put your right foot out
You put your right foot in and you shake it all about
Do the hokey pokey and you turn yourself around
That's what it's all about
==============================

What if the Hokey Pokey IS what it's all about?

I don't mean to make light of your serious take on this. The Logical Song is one of the great ones - where music and poetry meld into one and become greater than the simple combination of its elements.

This is one of the ways I cope - by injecting humor.

 Hey Brew,
Thanks ... first smile brought to my face today. I don't see it as making light of the question ... in fact ... I got a chuckle out of it and am smiling as I try to write. Not a bad choice at all to describe all the crap we have to deal with ... it IS "Hokey Pokey" ... in it's own way. Like that choice!
 Grin

 And Sean,
Not long ago Rex and Heather made me a CD with Johny Cash that has "Hurt" on it. Very moving ... in fact, you could pretty much hear in his voice and tone the helplessness he was feeling that so many of us can easily identify with. but still wanting to make a fight out of it. Good choice there too.

 Take care,
Dave (Who put his right foot in and shook it all about)

It's funny you bring this up, Dave.  Over the weekend I was gonna post some lyrics to this song because it paints a good pic of where my mind is at during this stage of my life.

An explorer he went wandering
To satisfy his pondering
Basically meandering
Unsure of what he'd find
Braving any danger
But to his family he's a stranger
And from time to time he turns around
And this runs through his mind

Life I embrace you
I shall honor and disgrace you
Please forgive if I replace you
You see I'm going through some pain
But now I see clearly
And the dawn is coming nearly
And though I'm human and it's early
I swear I'll never forget again

There's a multitude of story
Some is clean and some is glory
But there is no need to worry
If you're sold or if you're bought
We're just spinning on some granite
That we like to call a planet
And if you need to contemplate
Well here's an optimistic thought

Life I embrace you
I shall honor and disgrace you
Please forgive if I replace you
You see I'm going through some pain
But now I see clearly
And the dawn is coming nearly
And though I'm human and it's early
I swear I'll never forget again

"the burning down"
King's X
Album: Gretchen Goes to Nebraska

where are you tonight
i don't seem to know you
no i'm not all right
where are you tonight
and my heart is nearly gone
there's not much left to offer
if i could somehow know
i could stop the burning down
where are you tonight
are you even really out there
i won't put up a fight
where are you tonight
and the world keeps spinning round
a vicious cycle turning
some of them know love
some of us know the burning down

Wow!
When I first made this post ... well ... I thought I should prepare myself for ridicule. But, instead, I now feel I'm not alone in this area. It's amazing the songs and lyrics that everyone has come up with, they all really hit home.
I don't consider it depressing at all either, in fact, more inspirational than anything else. Music and the thoughts expressed behind it, I find to be another voice out there speaking for us things we'd like to say or feel and when we hear that certain song that may be for the moment or life ... gotta feel somewhat thankful that it is there to express what we sometimes can't.
Love it when you post the words, like Paul Simon said, "Words like silent raindrops fall ..."
Have looked at even the 2 songs I wasn't familiar with, and can see how they relate.
Thanks All for not giving me a hard time over this post, I'm fighting a battle, you've respected that and shared back how you also fight your battles.
Hope to hear more, I love music and what it means to help so many of us carry on.

Korn - Tearjerker

Well I wish there was someone
Well I wish there was someone
To love me

When I used to be someone
And I knew there was someone
That loved me

As I sit here frozen alone
Even ghosts get tired and go home
As they crawl back under the stones

And I wish there was something
Please tell me there's something better
And I wish there was something more than this
Saturated loneliness

And I wish I could feel it
And I wish I could steal it
Abduct it, corrupt it, but I never can
it's just saturated loneliness

Does the silence get lonely?
Does the silence get lonely?
Who knows?
I've been hearing it tell me
I've been hearing it tell me
Go home

Cause the freaks are playing tonight
They packed up and turned out the lights

And I wish there was something
Please tell me there's something better
And I wish there was something more than this
Saturated loneliness

And I wish I could feel it
And I wish I could steal it
Abduct it, corrupt it, but I never can
It's just saturated loneliness

And the bath waters cold
And this life's getting old

And I wish I could feel it
And I wish I could feel it
And I wish I could steal it
Abduct it, corrupt it
And I wish I could feel it
And I wish I could steal it
And I wish I could feel it
Abduct it, corrupt it
But I never can
I never can
Never Can
Never Can
Never Can

The most loneliest day of my life

It's a day that I can't stand

The most loneliest day of my life
The most loneliest day of my life

Such a lonely day
Shouldn't exist
It's a day that I'll never miss
Such a lonely day
And its mine
The most loneliest day of my life

And if you go, I wanna go with you
And if you die, I wanna die with you

Take your hand and walk away

The most loneliest day of my life
The most loneliest day of my life
The most loneliest day of my life

Such a lonely day

Nine Inch Nails - Right Where it Belongs

See the animal in his cage that you built,
Are you sure what side you're on?
Better not look him too closely in the eye,
Are you sure what side of the glass you are on?
See the safety of the life you have built,
Everything where it belongs
Feel the hollowness inside of your heart,
And it's all...right where it belongs

What if everything around you,
Isn't quite as it seems?
What if all the world you think you know,
Is an elaborate dream?
And if you look at your reflection,
Is it all you want it to be?
What if you could look right through the cracks,
Would you find yourself...find yourself afraid to see?

What if all the world's inside of your head?
Just creations of your own
Your devils and your gods all the living and the dead
And you're really all alone
You can live in this illusion,
You can choose to believe.
You keep looking but you can't find the woods,
While you're hiding in the trees

What if everything around you,
Isn't quite as it seems?
What if all the world you used to know,
Is an elaborate dream?
And if you look at your reflection,
Is it all you want it to be?
What if you could look right through the cracks,

I will have to ponder this as I use all sorts of music to temper my moods - I have a venerable "cookbook" of songlists where "X" song = specific feelings.

Opus - Burning Down got lots of play during my last breakup....King's X (Ty Tabor on guitar - sweet phrasing) are super coooool.

The Dance....I never want someone to tell me how to live life, I want to live it myself...and I always have.

Looking back on the memory of
The dance we shared 'neath the stars alone
For a moment all the world was right
How could I have known that you'd ever say goodbye

And now I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance

Holding you I held everything
For a moment wasn't I a king
But if I'd only known how the king would fall
Hey who's to say you know I might have chanced it all

And now I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance

Yes my life is better left to chance
I could have missed the pain but I'd of had to miss the dance

Yes, I know its very Okie of me, but who gives a shit?  Grin

Me too...what I listen to either helps form my mood/mindset for the day or reflects what Im feeling.  I always try to play uppity/dancy type music when I'm in the shower.  It helps my mood and energy level.

Dave I always find songs that seem to explain me or explain my feelings on things.

First one that came to mind was...

Welcome to my Life by Simple Plan
Do you ever feel like breaking down?
Do you ever feel out of place?
Like somehow you just don't belong
And no one understands you
Do you ever wanna runaway?
Do you lock yourself in your room?
With the radio on turned up so loud
That no one hears you screaming

No you don't know what it's like
When nothing feels all right
You don't know what it's like
To be like me

To be hurt
To feel lost
To be left out in the dark
To be kicked when you're down
To feel like you've been pushed around
To be on the edge of breaking down
And no one's there to save you
No you don't know what it's like
Welcome to my life

Do you wanna be somebody else?
Are you sick of feeling so left out?
Are you desperate to find something more?
Before your life is over
Are you stuck inside a world you hate?
Are you sick of everyone around?
With their big fake smiles and stupid lies
While deep inside you're bleeding

No you don't know what it's like
When nothing feels all right
You don't know what it's like
To be like me

To be hurt
To feel lost
To be left out in the dark
To be kicked when you're down
To feel like you've been pushed around
To be on the edge of breaking down
And no one's there to save you
No you don't know what it's like
Welcome to my life

No one ever lied straight to your face
No one ever stabbed you in the back
You might think I'm happy but I'm not gonna be okay
Everybody always gave you what you wanted
Never had to work it was always there
You don't know what it's like, what it's like

To be hurt
To feel lost
To be left out in the dark
To be kicked when you're down
To feel like you've been pushed around
To be on the edge of breaking down
And no one's there to save you
No you don't know what it's like (what it's like)

To be hurt
To feel lost
To be left out in the dark
To be kicked when you're down
To feel like you've been pushed around
To be on the edge of breaking down
And no one's there to save you
No you don't know what it's like
Welcome to my life

Bring on the Rain

Another day has almost come and gone
Can’t imagine what else could wrong
Sometimes I’d like to hide away somewhere and lock the door
A single battle lost but not the war (‘cause)

Tomorrow’s another day
And I’m thirsty anyway
So bring on the rain

It’s almost like the hard times circle ‘round
A couple drops and they all start coming down
Yeah, I might feel defeated,
I might hang my head
I might be barely breathing - but I’m not dead

Tomorrow’s another day
And I’m thirsty anyway
So bring on the rain

I’m not gonna let it get me down
I’m not gonna cry
And I’m not gonna lose any sleep tonight

The older I get, the more this song makes sense.

Reflections Of My Life

The changing
Of sunlight to moonlight
Reflections of my life
Oh how they fill my eyes
The greetings
Of people in trouble
Reflections of my life
Oh how they fill my eyes

All my sorrows
Sad tomorrows
Take me back to my own home
All my cryings
Feel I'm dying, dying
Take me back to my own home

I'm changing, arranging
I'm changing, I'm changing everything
Oh, everything around me
The world is a bad place
A bad place, a terrible place to live
Oh, but I don't wanna die

All my sorrows
Sad tomorrows
Take me back to my own home
All my cryings
Feel I'm dying, dying
Take me back to my own home
All my sorrows
Sad tomorrows
Take me back to my own home
All my cryings...

And if you look at your reflection,
Is it all you want it to be?
What if you could look right through the cracks,
Would you find yourself...find yourself afraid to see?

This is by far my favorite NIN song. I listened to it on loop walking the town one day.

Give me awhile to ponder this thought. I love alot of the stuff posted already, but lemme think on what I could have wrote myself.

Peace,
Carl D

Have always been a huge fan of NIN but lately I'm really into A Perfect Circle.

Don't fret prescious I'm here
step away from the window
go back to sleep...

lay your head down child
I won't let the boogeyman come
count the bodies like sheep to the rhythm of the war drums
pay no mind to the rabble
pay no mind to the rabble
head down go to sleep to the rhythm of the war drums

pay no mind to what other voices say
they don't care about you
like I do
like I do..
safe from pain of truth and choice
and other poisoned devils
see they don't give a fuck about you
like I do...
just...
stay with me
safe and ignorant
go back to sleep
go back to sleep..

lay your head down child
I won't let the boogeyman come
count the bodies like sheep to the rhythm of the war drums
pay no mind to the rabble
pay no mind to the rabble
head down go to sleep to the rhythm of the war drums...

I'll be the one to protect you from
your enemies and all your demons
I'll be the one to protect you from
a will to survive and a voice of reason
I'll be the one to protect you from
your enemies and your choices son..
we're one and the same I must isolate you
isolate and save you from yourself

swaying to the rhythm of a new world order
count bodies like sheep to the rythem of the war drums
the boogeymen are coming
the boogeymen are coming
keep your head down go to sleep to the rhythm of the war drums...

stay with me...
safe and...
ignorant...
just stay with me...
hold you and protect you from the other ones..
the evil ones..
for I love you son...
go back to sleep

Here's one that hits pretty close to home sometimes:

Suicide is Painless
aka Theme from M.A.S.H.

Through early morning fog I see
visions of the things to be
the pains that are withheld for me
I realize and I can see that

[Refrain]:

Suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
and I can take or leave it if I please.

I try to find a way to make
all our little joys relate
without that ever-present hate
but now I know that it's too late, and...

[Refrain]

The game of life is hard to play
I'm gonna lose it anyway
The losing card I'll someday lay
so this is all I have to say.

[Refrain]

The only way to win is cheat
And lay it down before I'm beat
and to another give my seat
for that's the only painless feat.

[Refrain]

The sword of time will pierce our skins
It doesn't hurt when it begins
But as it works its way on in
The pain grows stronger, watch it grin, but...

[Refrain]

A brave man once requested me
to answer questions that are key
"is it to be or not to be?"
and I replied "oh why ask me?"

'Cause suicide is painless
it brings on many changes
and I can take or leave it if I please.
...and you can do the same thing if you choose.

Well I'm ever upper class high society,
God's gift to ballroom notoriety,
I always fill my ballroom
(The event is never small)
The social pages say I've got
The biggest balls of all
Oh I've got big balls
I've got big balls
And they're such big balls
Dirty big balls
And he's got big balls
And she's got big balls
But we've got the biggest balls of them all
And my balls are always bouncing
My ballroom always full
And everybody cums and cums again
If your name is on the guest list
No-one can take you higher
Everybody says I've got
GREAT BALLS OF FIRE
Oh I've got big balls
repeat
Some balls are held for charity
And some for fancy dress
But when they're held for pleasure
They're the balls that I like best.
My balls are always bouncing
To the left and to the right
It's my belief that my big balls
Should be held every night
Oh I've got big balls
repeat
And I'm just itching to tell you about them
Oh we had such wonderful fun
Seafood cocktail, crabs, crayfish...
Ball sucker
