Police torture in Knoxville TN When Tennessee law enforcement officials showed up at the home of Lester Siler, who they suspected of drug use, they asked Lester's wife and son to leave. They didn't know that Lester's wife had turned on a tape recorder in the kitchen. When Lester exercised his constitutional right not to sign a consent to search his house, these officers spent the next two hours torturing him. They beat him with bats and guns, held loaded guns to his head, threatened to shoot him, dunked his head in the toilet, burned him with lighters, attached his testicles to a battery charger, threatened to cut off his fingers, and threatened to "go get" his wife and take his child away from him. Then they arrested him for "evading arrest"." You can here nearly 40 minutes of the tape recording HERE http://wms.scripps.com/knoxville/siler/siler.mp3

Jonny, I am really torn on this clip. His wife did do a good thing by turning a recorder on. But in my opinion and some of the crap I get to see working the way I work, I can understand some of the police's frustration. Trying to take a "known drug dealer" off the street. But then again they need to maybe brush up on their details and get a warrant. I am really confused as to who's side I should take. Rodger

Nah Rodger. I am sure he is probably a piece of shit, but if they had probable cause to believe there were drugs in the house that he was selling, and he refused to sign a Consent to Search, then someone calls the Co Atty and gets a search warrant signed by the judge. One officer drives into town and gets it while the others stay there. Doesn't take anytime to do it right. These guys were wrong from the get go.

| Jimi I agree with that. I mean I know you have seen folks you just wanted to touch and help them see the light. But a respectable person doesn't. Like I said the officers should brush up on their details and obtained a warrant. My point was that a lot of the criminals are protected by the law. Rodger

Once they found out it was being recorded, they should have beat her, too. Remember all this law stuff next time some dickhead is dealing near your kids school. Even the most liberial person tends to get their nose out of joint when it strikes that close to home. Unfortunately, most people don't get the wakeup call until it is too late and a bunch of these asshats have walked. Kinda like the child molester in Montana. The judge gave him 10 years probation instead of the MANDATORY 10 years in prison. Why? Because he was too short. "He wouldn't survive prison and that is cruel and unusual punishment." What about the kid he molested? It isn't cruel and unusual to have some kid toucher try to tag you in the kester? The planet would be better off with half the population removed...I know, depending on the day, I would fall in the removed half! But seriously...

Battery charger to the nads, frustration doesn't cause someone to do that, sadism does. Dirty cops are dirty cops. Now every person they arrested will be apealing their cases and I wouldn't be surprised if more shows up. By listening to the recording you can tell they have done it before.

Tom_K, Did you read what happened to this man? Hell, if these are the tactics that *we* are going to use, then *we* might as well kiss all our freedoms goodbye. I could understand if they had just verbally intimidated him, but this just wasn't the case~ They beat him with bats and guns, held loaded guns to his head, threatened to shoot him, dunked his head in the toilet, burned him with lighters, attached his testicles to a battery charger, threatened to cut off his fingers, and threatened to "go get" his wife and take his child away from him.. I'm not saying that this man shouldn't have been arrested, just that I don't want to see Gestapo tactics. Why in the hell didn't they just arrest him (like they were SUPPOSED to do) and take him to jail? Mr. Siler owuld have been behind bars a helluva lot quicker. http://www.wbir.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=29292&provider=top

| You're right, they shouldn't have gone as far as they did, they should have arrested him and left it at that. These cops are going to be on the inside looking out for a good many number of years. I don't condone what they did, I don't excuse what they did, but I certainly do understand it. I know plenty of cops, I don't know if I could do their job without making a few of the asshats do the chicken on a nightly basis. Here's a bit of advice to Mr. Siler, don't break the law. Then you won't have to put up with that stuff. Cops don't break down my door and do that kind of thing. I'm sorry I have no compassion for drug dealers, kid touchers and the like. You break the law and suffer the consequences. If I were there, I probably would have said, "Hey...You're going about that all wrong. Red is positive..." If I broke the law, I would expect the same. Hell, if I pulled the stunt Rodney King pulled, I'd expect to have my ass beaten, (not to bring all that up again.), but hell, cops get a bad enough rap, then a bunch of idiots go and do this...WTF

You either live here and obey the laws, no matter who you are. If bad people get away with something or if you don't like the laws there is the ballot box. It's how it's done. No other way is acceptable. This place works because when stuff like this happens, it makes us all sick. Charlie

Some local boys can be errant cowboys sometimes and should lose the uniform. There's a couple bad apples when having a position of power in a situation. on May 30th, 2006, 8:37pm, Tom K wrote:You break the law and suffer the consequences. | I've encountered a couple, in one instance an officer preferred a blackjack while another locks your arms. That same officer was later fired for beating a sixteen year old duct taped to a chair. That's going about it all wrong. Having paid consequences both ways, I'd have to say it was the court that got it right and was what changed me, not when hate and lack of respect was instilled by the police.

| This could be why The Shield is so popular... Like I said before I don't defend or condone their actions. They should get the longest stay possible and then some. They should probably get even longer stays due to the fact that they know what the laws are. Not that it is really going to matter since cops on the inside usually don't find themselves living out their sentences. Maybe we need to change the laws so when you get convicted of something, you get the punishment of what you did to your victim. Beat someone, you get beat. Shoot someone, you get shot, etc. Use a battery charger, red is positive, you know the rest. Or bring back the ol' make big rocks into little rocks, make little rocks into gravel, make gravel into concrete and repeat...

| Not yet, but if you allow Law Enforcement to treat a suspected drug dealer like that, then the next time some cop has a beef with you, you might find yourself a "suspected" drug user. All they would have to say when you complained is "Oops, my bad." Law enforcement personnel are bound by the laws they enforce. In fact, they are held to a higher standard so their actions in enforcing the laws are above reproach. The ones who can't live up to that have no business in that line of work. And yes, I did it for almost 10 years. I have no compassion for drug dealers or child molesters or rapists or murderers or any of the other boils on the butt of society. I also have no compassion for crooked or dirty cops.

Man, that is totally insane. I hope these cops are made an example of. And what is the deal with all the sexual torture? What straight man would decide to pull out another man's testicles? It seems these men are gay and frustrated. 20 years will give these cops all the gay lovin they want. B$

| Ok, not defending the cops, but from what I know talking to cops I know, YMMV, a good percentage, 75%? maybe, could be higher or lower, of the people busted are repeaters. I'm talking dealers, shooters, etc. Chances are that this guy was busted on this before and will be again. Doesn't give the cops the right what-so-ever, but I'm sure this guy wasn't an angel. Like I said, doesn't give them the right. Was kinda interesting watching all of the people Ryan pardoned from Death Row, here in Illinois. 90% of them are back in prison or are dead from getting shot committing a crime. It's a fine line, being too soft on crime or too hard. If we are soft too long, does the system break down and we are dealing with a Judge Dread or Escape from New York type of society, or does that happen because of being too hard on crime? Maybe if my initial post was read with tongue firmly planted in cheek, like it was intended, this wouldn't be such a huge misunderstanding of my point. Maybe I need to be more serious when I post

They couldn't have let those cops get away with tactics like that. If they were to let it go, they would be giving the rest of the police forces the okay to do the same. Cops like that everywhere would start a resistance movement, then a war. IMO UNsolved

They couldn't find anything. Mr. X was being a smartass because of the intimidation. They where wanting info about another person. The NEXT DAY, the same cops pulled over Mr. X again searched the car and found nothing. After saying Mr. X didn't have his girlfriend to defend him, they handcuffed Mr. X and beat him until he had a black eye and bruised ribs then let him go. (no tape recorder) Mr. Z got so drunk at a concert, he couldn't hold it long enough to find a restroom so pissed behind a van. He didn't realise it was full of cops. Instead of either arresting him, or letting him go, they commenced beating him with billyclubs until he was bleeding half to death, bruised ribs and black eyes. (no tape recorder) I suppose those two stories where o.k. too Tom.

I remember when the cops in Collinsville busted a drug house - they tied the couple up, yelled at them and threatened their lives, tore the house searching for drugs, smashed furniture and the TV, and then realized that they raided the wrong house. That is what pisses off liberals (and conservatives). Procedures, like presumption of innocence and due process are there for a reason. People should not lose all rights when they are suspected or accused of a crime.
