Sounds like youe Java run time engine isn't working. Got to Sun and get the latest Java engine for your operating system. Then try it again.

Actually... JRE shouldn't be necessary to access chat, but he may have javascript disabled in his browser. Or maybe he's runnin' IE...

I thought the JRE provided the base for the plug in for Java script? I doubt he has it turned off but you never know. Usually I find that Microsoft windows corrupts things and they need to be reinstalled.
The 3R's of windows, Retry, Reboot, Reinstall.

Perhaps he is running Microsoft and is lost. 
Or he might be a Mac user and not know what a PC is. In either case Paul you should get him to run Firefox or Opera, and perhaps that will help him for a few minutes.
