As it stands anyone can walk into this country and have a baby, BINGO!....all the family are Americans.

My question is this......How many of you would like to amend the constitution to read, "If your not here legally, take your kid and go home"?

WE pay for everyone....69 Billion a year!

What say you?

I think if we are going to ammend the constitution, we should use proper English.

Quote:
U.S. Army soldier Zeferino Colunga Jr.  died four months ago from a mysterious illness he contracted while serving in Iraq and was buried with full honors in a Texas cemetery. Last week, with the family still in mourning, the soldier's father was deported to Mexico as an illegal immigrant. Now family members wonder if the deportation of Zeferino Colunga Sr. was connected to their public demand for an independent investigation into the young soldier's death.

I agree, the thing that really gets me is that all of a sudden they go from being illegal aliens to immigrants, now correct me if I am wrong but to be an immigrant you have to be here legally and if you are not here legally then you are an illegal alien.
I think calling them immigrants is just trying to make it sound less then it is and is a insult to everyone who has gone through the legal process to be able to proudly call themselves immigrants.
Now I was born here but my great grandparents came here from Europe and they where proud to have earned the right to call themselves American and never drove around with a flag on the hood of there car or demanded that all form be printed in there native tong and spoke English when ever they where in public and tried hard to learn English and be part of American society.
Sorry but people that say they want to be part of America but try and turn it into there own country piss me off.

George isn't happy. He's been ostensibly leaning over the fence because he has the truly xenophobic and militia fringe of his own party to deal with. I truly believe that is not where he wants to fit in. It's not a slam-dunk way to get votes either.

I thought it was just kids born here that are automatic citizens. I suppose this reflects notions of centuries gone by. It certainly isn't on everyone's short list of things that work well today.

One thing that does work well is that it's incredibly difficut to ammend the Constitution.

I may be wrong on this, but I thought that if you come here illegally and your child is born here, then your child is automatically an American citizen since any child born within our borders is a citizen.  However, the parents or entire family are still illegal.  Am I wrong on this?

Sean - do you mean Indian as in India or Indian as in Native American?  Just curious!

You are mixing up the concepts. An immigrant is simply a person that moves to a place - it is independent of anything else (reasons for moving, legal status, etc.).

Amending the constitution is a real bear so if you hear politicians talking about it they are usually blowing hot wind your way,  but IMHO...

I would like to see Amendment 14 amended again so that just being born on American soil does NOT result in automatic citizenship.

While we are at it, I would like to see it changed so dual citizenship is no longer possible.  If you want to be an American- your loyalty and identity becomes American and only American.

Yep. But, then there is a decision to make. The baby is American, the mother is an illegal sneak-across-the-border type. Do we make the mother abandon her child? Or do we toss a legal American citizen out of the country. An American citizen that has not broken any law(s)?

Isn't there something in the Bible about visiting the sins of the parents on the child?

In the acquaintences I have had, my understanding is that the child born in the US can be deported with the family, and then return at a later date, sponsoring the other family members for citizenship only when he/she turns 18.

Though, my understanding my be flawed.

And, of course, just because a law says something doesn't mean it is always enforced that way.

In fact, things are really up in the air now.  There are even some scientists who theorize that the first Americans could have been European in origin. Shocked

While we are at it, I would like to see it changed so dual citizenship is no longer possible.  If you want to be an American- your loyalty and identity becomes American and only American.

So, my son born to an active duty Air Force serviceman, with 22 years of service, with a wife who is legally resident in this country, should not be allowed citizenship?

As it stands at the moment, there are 2 countries that the US allows dual citizenship with (legally), Canada and Ireland. For me to take my oath of naturalization (after paying the $1200) I have to renounce my citizenship and loyalty to any foreign government.  Canada does not recognize that renunciation.  I would have to write a letter of request of audience with the Governor General of Canada and essentially go before a 'confirmation hearing' and then they would determine if they will allow me to renounce my Canadian citizenship.

Under your proposal, I cannot naturalize, and my son cannot be a US citizen, and if I were to be granted renunciation of Canadian citizenship (which is rare) my son would then have no citizenship to any country - he was born in the US to a father of American citizenship, but you would have him unable to claim birth citizenship by birth right of a father who has served 22 years defending the constitution you wish to amend,  and would not be allowed to claim Canadian citizenship (an automatic right allowed to him currently as he was born to a mother of Canadian Citizenship), but as soon as I was granted renunciation he would be left a citizen of no country.

Would it take care of the problems with the Mexicans and other foreign nationals using that to gain residency? Possibly, but of course, IMO it would fuck over those of us who are trying to do things according to the law and have paid every penny (to the tune of $4000 so far), filled in every form, produced a background of myself from the age of 16 (including a police report from every city I have lived in from the age of 16), provided a full security and clearance check done by the Canadian Gov't, as well as having provided documented proof of the standard medical, financial, and stability requirements to become a permanent resident.

Yup, that makes alot of sense.  Let's fuck every body over.

And to think, my husband has been deployed to a war zone 5 times in his 22 year career defending the freedoms of this country and protecting the constitution from enemies foreign and domestic -- all to have the constitution he has put his life on the line to protect, changed to deny his son citizenship and his wife naturalization if your proposed amendments were enacted.

That's simply not true.

http://www.post-gazette.com/nation/20020515dual0515p4.asp

If it were just Canada, it would be different.  As it stands we just had millions of illegal immigrants waving flags of countries other than the US in an effort to be granted amnesty and citizenship of this country.

And of course there is this fun fact...

Quote:
In response to a survey of newly naturalized citizens in Los Angeles, 90 percent of Muslim immigrants said that if there were a conflict between the United States and their country of origin, they would be inclined to support their country of origin, said John Fonte of the Hudson Institute.

Grin Grin I believe the American Indians might have shared the view that this is our land and the Whites have no right to take it from us.
I feel any person that can make it here should be allowed to stay and try to meet the legal issues.
I'd still be digging up taters in Ireland and Terri would be making Feta in Greece if our ansestors had been twarted the same way as most of us contind to want to twart the new immagrants.
I see this problem as more of a ""failing of the elected officals"" to follow their own policies. If the border Patrol and INS were diligent in their duties we wouldn't hav this problem.
People that hire the undocumented worker and the poloticians that look the other way are the ones to blame here.
I agree with Buying American, however with Giants like WalMart and IBM in the hands of the Chainese already ther isn't much chance for the small business operations here that have been forced to be more humane by our labor laws.
Out sourcing is another way to circumvent our own Labor laws and Standards and If your Big Business and have people to lobby for you and fight in congress life is a diferent game as far as the law and limitations placed on the rest of us!     JMHO  Pappy
