I have to agree. And, using the National Guard or Reserves to guard the border is B.S. Their job is to protect America in case the USA is attacked. It was not their job to go to war in Iraq. Mexico is not attacking us. It is the Border Patrol's job to stop the illegals. The Guard and Reserve troops don't deserve to come home from Iraq and then be sent to the border. Except in time of war it is not the military's job to patrol the border.

| I agree too. My Father came through Ellis Island from Germany... legally. He studied our laws, learned how to speak English and took the test and proudly stood up, raised his right hand and was sworn in to be a US citizen. Amnesty for the millions of illegals is a very cruel slap in the face to people like Cat, my Dad and others who followed the rules.

And YES they are taking jobs away from our citizens by working for $2-3.00 per hour, three or 4 families living in one house and collecting food stamps, etc. We have many workers here willing to work for minimum wage. It is not that Americans don't want to do certain jobs. They just can't make it on what the pay is. It is a fact that if you do not earn in one week what is equal to one months rent or mortage payment, you aren't going to make it. How many homeless people do we have in this country? How many used- to- be middle class people can now be wiped out if they lose a couple of weeks pay due to illness or whatever? I wish you all would go to www.letters-to.com and put this all down in one thread that I could mail to the powers-that-be. That site is all but dead, but I'd revive it in a heart beat just to show our superiors(?) that we have something to say. What happened to our job applications where we had to provide social security cards to prove that we were legal? My grandparents came from Prague and Germany, stood in line at Elis Island, studied English, learned the levels of government and tested out to earn their citizenship..ever so proudly. And now this stupid tax break where the middle class family saves $20 to $30 dollars per year while the rich saves in the 6 figures? It's our own fault, to a point. We let them get away with this crap a little bit at a time until we are so far in deep doo-doo that we can't get out. When are we the people going to say enough is enough? Sorry.......I get really upset when we talk about our government.

| Not exactly - a person born to a parent who is an American citizen is a citizen from day 1, no matter where they are born. It's a legal doctrine called jus sanguine, doctrine of blood. There is a form to fill out at any US embassy, and they will 'convert' the foreign birth certificate into the equivalent of a US birth certificate ... called a "Report of a US Citizen Born Abroad." That's what my daughter has, and she has had a US passport since she was knee high to a grasshopper. The other side of the coin is jus soli, doctrine of soil. Born on US soil = US citizen. I don't know as much about the details of that one, the US Constitution does mention it. Quote:Amendment XIV. Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. |

Right now, we (as in the US) is probably one of the most despised countries in the world. | well, that's not quite correct either. 1) Article I, Section 8; Clause 15 The Congress shall have Power ... To provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions. I do believe that thousands of illegals crossing the border illegally would come under the classical definition of *Invasion*.

| 1) enforce the existing immigration/labor laws 2) 6 months to register for and obtain a visa. Work, school, visitor doesn't matter, apply for what you need. 3) If you haven't applied in time you will be sent home 4) If you violate the terms of your visa you cannot be approved for another one. 5) hire/ train enough border protection agents. I think the number is 6,000 6) keep up the pressure to get it right. The only reason immigration is headlines is because voters are upset and letting people know it. Unfortunatly rule for one is rule for all. Age, gender, health or nationality it makes no difference. By applying even, fair pressure to get legal or get out, many will go home, more will try and get legal and the rest will be sent home.

I agree too.....I believe the answer lies in the economics of the situation.....supply and demand....we (American Companies) demand cheap labor because we demand cheap products (and higher profits).....Mexico supplies the cheap labor. Following the current laws (I-9's etc) on the books would cull a lot of it but the answer lies in curtailing the demand for $2.00 an hour labor, which don’t seem likely....hmmm....punish the companies that willingly employ illeagles? Charlie!

In other countries, if an American wants to work there, he/she applies for a work visa. This has to be renewed periodically (usually every 3 months - depending on the country). If you don't report for the renewal (and a lot of time that means leaving the country for a while and then coming back) - you go to jail or worse (depending on the country). Even in Venezuela (a thrid world country if I ever saw one) they KEEP UP with "guest workers" and come after you if you don't renew your visa. Now, if these OTHER countries can keep up with people who are "guests" in their country WHY the hell can't the US? Over the past 40+ years I've been in and out of the US and coming back in I ALWAYS get questioned by the immigration people. Why aren't they doing this to others? As far as the border goes -- put up the wall and if you catch the illegals - send 'em back. Maybe instead of tapping all our phones, the US government should start checking SS cards on jobsites. Fine the hell out of the employer and send the employee back. And as far as I-9s go, most people don't even bother with them. As I've said before, I've never known anyone to get checked on them, so people just don't fool with them. I always did, but most people I know don't even know what they are (small companies). It's taken a lot of years of "ignoring" this problem to get into this fix, so it'll take a little while to get out of it, but it's time Congress did SOMETHING besides talk! Hugs BD

| Step one is to apply the laws in place already. Personnel is a problem so give local police the power to check and prosecute immigration violations. Right now only Homelandd security can do that. As for the rest its a matter of upgrading the systems already in place to expedite visa applications. BUT it MUST be rule for one rule for all. That includes Canadians, Europeans, Asians, everyone! If you do that the number increase way beyond the 12-14 million Latinos. Are we willing to go that far?

| Unfortunately, I know a few business people that use illegals in their businesses. They don’t pay them $2.00 and hour, they get pretty decent money. I believe the incentive is the elimination of paying workmans comp and social security fees.
