Hello all-
I was just wondering. My cousin's wife(35 years old) had surgery this morning to remove "a" tumor from her breast. When they went in, they found that the cancer had spread to one lymph node and to some of the tissues in the surrounding areas. They got allof it out but had to remove one of the nodes. Understandibly, my cousin is very upset, scared and nervous be cause it was nore serious and/or bigger than they expected. Thought I might be able to get some feedback from some of you. You've all been so very helpful to me and always willings to offer help, advice, prayers and vibes(CH related or not). So I knew just where to go, when I really didn't have much info personally to offer him. Hope this thread is finding you PF and HAF. LOVE YOU ALL!

The big C is just plain scarey. Tell him my wifes grandmother had breats cancer and had a radical mastectomy...(spelling?)...means they had to remove the whole thing, when she was 70 years old. She's 96 now and it never came back. Give em both oodles of support and offer our prayers.

My story is similar to Guiseppi's. My mother had a radical mastectomy 23 yrs ago. All the nodes were removed on the affected side. She went thru some horrible chemotherapy, developed pernicious anemia..........and, we will be with her this Mother's Day, just like every one before this!
Cancer.particularly breast cancer has come a long, long way. People are surviving in astounding numbers.and NOT just surviving, but living long full lives.
Mom is 81 now.
I think Mom's best medicine was her sense of humor, her spirit. It still is, in fact.
Encourage your friend to push through this, just like the beast, NEVER give in! Make sure she has a really good Dr. One who will listen and explain, and is not afraid to push the nevelope. Give her lots of hugs and support and encouragement .
Please keep us posted. I love stories with happy endings..so I will be looking for that!

Vibes to your cousin and especially to his wife! I have family friends, who have fought against breast cancer and are happy and healthy today.

Sorry to hear about your cousin's wife. This topic cuts close to home for me. I had two close friends with breast cancer. Chemo is a real tough treatment and so is radiation. The upside is 5 year survival today is much better than just 20 years ago. If it was cought early enough and depending on what type of cancer it is, the chances are good for remission. I think the hallmark is 5 years cancer free to be considered "cured" but it is something she will always have to keep a close eye on.
The ACS (Am. cancer society) is a wonderful source of info and she can get in touch with support groups. She should talk with someone that has gone through breast cancer. 1/2 the fear is not knowing what to expect.

I am a 22 years breast cancer survivor (will be 23 June 1st.)
I had both breast and lympth node removed.. by the Grace of God I am still here.
I speak regularly at the Breast Cancer Survivor Meetings at Provena/Covenent Hospital in Urbana.
I will keep you and your family up lifted in Prayers. Please remember pfunk, when I had cancer, did not have all the modern technical supplies that they have now. So her chance as excellent.
Please tell your cousin to make sure he lets her know that breast isn't important; that he loves her and that she is still beautiful...

Patrick.when you see the American Cancer Society in your area, please think of the research needed there.........
Most every community in the US, and in many other countries as well, have the Relay for Life. This is a 24 hr fundraiser for all kinds of cancer research. I have been involved for about 10 yrs now. Please get involved in this, or perhaps the Susan G Komen foundation, both of which not only raise funds for research, but for education, support and assistance for those who need it.............and they are very good at raising spirits as well...as I said, attitude...........spirit is more than 75% of this battle!
She's very lucky she has family who cares!

Thank you so very much for your thoughts. And since you brought it up, in the past couple of years I have become pretty actively involved in various events for Relay for Life. My family's two stores sold the purple braclets. At the College of Charleston, those of us in the Phys. Ed. department organize an annual 5K run/walk. And for the past three years my softball coach has organized a one-pitch softball tournament(we generated $6000 at $300 per team). It is a very worthy cause and there is so much more to be done. I would encourage everyone to give, even if it's just a little loose change you have lying around. Much luv to all.
