I've booked my flight and got a good deal to land in New York, now I want to book here:

Central Park Hostel 19 West 103rd Street near Central Park West, New York

Does anybody know this area?

It seems central and there is a shuttle service to and from the airports.

Anybody got more info on this area and its sites?

It would be highly appreciated.

That's considered "Museum Mile"

You're about a 15 minute walk  from the MET (museum of modern art) and tons of others.

Also right near Columbia University.

There are tons of great restaurants near by.

I have never been/stayed there but am quite familiar with the area.

Also, one can really never get lost in Manhattan.
It is one giant grid.

Have a blast!

Buy a map, just of Manhattan, my wife and I drove all over the place one weekend  then on to Connecticut. As far as driving Saturday is better traffic wise than M-F Sunday is almost a ghost town. Subways are the cheapest albeit a little nasty and cabs are everywhere but not so much on Sunday. Parking you own (rental car) is almost as much as the Hotel and could be two blocks away. Always keep at least 50-100 $ bills close at hand, you can't even go to the bathroom without someone wanting a tip.

Hi Jas
Actually, Eric, isnt museum mile on the east side of the park?
Jas, that is not exactly a great area, but its not bad.  My Dad used to live about 3 blocks east of there.
From there you will take the Red Line subway south (downtown) to get to midtown and to downtown.  Midtown is considered like 42nd street, Rockefeller center is there, the jewelry district, the theater district, grand central station, Penn station, central park south is a nice place also.
If you go a little NE of midtown, that is museum mile and a lot of other famous things known as the upper east side......about E80th st and 5th ave, Madison, Lexington avenues.
If you go downtown, that is where the south street seaport is, and wall street, and the ferry to staten island and the statue of libery boat take off from lower manhattan.  The WTC is in lower manhattan.
Between midtown and downtown are lots of great things, including So-Ho, chna town, little italy, alphabet city and many more.

Have a good time, lemme know if you want any specifics.
BMonee

I'm with BMonee on this one.  Not a great area, but not bad.  Too close to the Harlem in my opinion.  Anyway, Pepp might definitely be able to tell you better.

Jas, what airport are you flying into?  If you're flying into LaGuardia it might be easier to stay at a hotel by the airport and a lot of them shuttle you into the city, which is about a 25 min ride or so.  Just an idea.

Either way, you'll love New York!  Jimi and Ms. Ruthie are coming here in June...we're having a small meet and greet of New Yorkers here then. Grin

I think my brother lives on 103rd street.  Tonight he mentioned something about the Upper West Side.  I'll have to ask him if where you are booking is near where he lives!  I think he likes it a lot. Smiley  I've never visited his apartment as we both moved about the same time last fall.

Hope you have a great time!!!

Hi Jas------Central Park West is a booming area. I am on Central Park West everyday. At 81st Street is the Museum of Natural History, always great. MOMA is on Fifth Avenue--which is the other side of Central Park. ( Central Park goes from 59th street ---to---110th Street) . The Dakota Apartment Building is on 72nd street and Central Park West---the hardest apartment building to get into---also where John Lennon was killed........The Time Warner building is in Columbus Circle ( Great Stores) ---that is 59th street and CPW------------This is one of my favorite areas ---( most new yorkers refer to it as New Amsterdam Area)--because the cross blocks ---going west are---Columbus Avenue---Amsterdam Avenue---Broadway---West End Avenue----Some of the City's best walking streets and restaurants. The Art Museums are on fifth avenue---Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim. You can OM me as the city is my playground.

The NY I'd like to see is the one described by Helene Hamffe in '84 Charing Cross Road' and 'Duchess of Bloomsbury Street'.

If the people are anything like she says, Jas, you're going to have a fabulous time and I'm jealous of you.

I'll print all and inspect it thoroughly, take advise and check out the places mentioned.

BMee man, specifics would be great as I do not know a dollar from a penny about New York.

Eric, to me it sounds great, sounds like a revival.

Langa I'll be landing at JFK and will have 4 days before leaving for Milwaukee.

Lizzie, please ask your brother if he knows this place.

Scott, sherbet, you'll have to give me this info in more words! Wink

Hi Jas,

Sounds like you have gotten pretty decent advice from the other NY'ers.

Eric guessed right on my account... I don't care to much for the area above 96th street on the West side.  I know someone close who lived on the West side and 103rd... you can find some mixed characters up there, just be careful where you walk at night, and if you are staying there, just be alert.

Jimi seems to have picked out a decent place to stay for a reasonable price, the Radio City apartments, near Broadway in the upper 40's.   That area really caters to tourists, and the 42nd street element has become rather benign.  There is a lot of patroling and a police station within a 5-minute walk, pretty safe I'd say.  Plus, you are central to all the sightseeing.

New York is not the notoriously dangerous place it was years ago.... ranks amongst the larger safe cities now.

Eric...snooty, I'd say the Omni Berkshire or W Hotel for starters.  Grin

P.S. Jasmyn, downtown is mad cool.

Wow.

Pay attention to this stuff Jas. I'm a real Hick (not from the original Hicksville but a branch  Cool I don't chew on straw though   Like I said. The last time I was in the city climbing buildings and rattling around was........1973  Shocked  The World Trade Center was pretty new and I think they were still looking for a few tenants.

Are the bus tours worth it guys? It might save time and get some of the tourist stuff out of the way so Jas can shop and shop and shop and shop. She might want to eat too.

I have found this site on the net:
http://www.buynewyorktours.com/index.html?gclid=CKnf87evs4QCFQqmQgodhCF2 DA

It gives me a lot of cool ideas but also a few questions.  For you NY savvy people, please can you tell me:

Should I get a multi-day pass or is it preferable to just book day tours?

I land the 9th of July but after a 27 hour flight, I think I might just sleep the rest of the day to recover  Cheesy.  After that I've got till the 13th when I'll fly to Milwaukee.

Now what would you recommend as must see's?

Charlie, I'm not very good at shopping.  I fail miserably at being a woman in that sense and many more like cooking, sewing and... basically when I think about it anything feminine bag.  You have a point though about the bus tours.

Pep, thanks for the advise.  There is a definite analogy to be drawn from my intended visit and letting King Kong loose in the city...    Embarassed
I'm checking out the map that Scott send me and trying to find my bearings, not that I have any marbles left. Wink

Sooo many numbers on streets, my goodness gracious!  Do I need to be good with math? Grin
