Trex reaction

Serious question

Early last week I had a fairly major hit. My doc gave me a Trex stat pen, and some trex samples. She wanted to know how it worked for me....
Ok so I tried it. I was having one of those hits that never want to leave. After 6 hours, I decided to try the trex, even though I HATE needles.
I was at kip 8 all afternoon. 2 minutes after I shoot up, the monster spikes to max. I thought I was going to die.
I am now afraid to try another shot, because it might cause the same reaction. It also took more than 15 min for the headache to die down... I would say to kip3

Anyone else have this happen??

No, I have only had it where trex did nothig. 6 hours, did you take anything else before that? I would have been on that trex a lot sooner. Try spitting the shots, taking a 1/3 shot makes the hit abort 5 min later, but eliminates all side effects for me.

Nah, Trex usually always works for me, unless I get stupid and have a beer or something.  And if you do that, just don't even use it, because 10 minutes after you shoot up, He'll be back...

... BTW, don't ever ever ever, EVEREVEREVER, take two shots within 15 minutes of each other.

I tried that once.  Feels like someone's punching you in the chest.

6 hours ???    Huh

Doesn't sound like a cluster to me. Must have been a bad meegraine.  Wink

BTW, Trex always makes me feel worse before it takes away the pain, but it's well worth it (to me). Also, I can't handle the full 6mg dose. I take between 3 and 4 mg.

Lance, Paul is right, try splitting the dosage.  It is on the "imitrex tip" on the left.

Six hours is not unheard of for a hit to last.  I had one last year that lasted 8 hours and no trex helped, as my uninformed doc prescribed a narcotic, which I used at the onset of the hit.

UNsolved is absolutely correct, trex can make you feel worse before it makes you feel better but if you use the correct dosage the side effects will be less.

At least it got the Kip 8 down to a 3 after 15 minutes.  It is usual that after such a long period in one hit that you won't get full relief.  After hours of such excruciating pain, the body seems to forget how to recover fully.

I hope with all my heart you don't get one of those again.

If you are apprehensive about needles it might cause your BP to spike and that could account for the increase in H/A.  Only reaction I get is a cold clamy feeling up the neck and scalp.  (once I hit a blood vessel and within 5 seconds my vision went dark and I lost hearing and my heart was like a runaway freight train.  Fastest abort in history!  I always pull back on the syringe now to see if I caught a vessel.)  Trex usually works within ~5-15 min.  If you hit a pocket of fat it takes longer.

Thanks Paul,
But you overlooked my one comment. I HATE SHOTS! I need to use the Stat Pen, because there is no way I can give myself a shot the other way.... did I mention that I HATE shots?
I had nothing prior to taking the shot.  I could not eat because of the pacing and holding my eye, and I am only taking Kudzu and Lamictol moring and evening. This was at 4pm.

, while I do get migraines from time to time, the pain is lots different. BUT, migraines do not affect only my right side, right eye being squeezed shut with a vise and a rail road spike being shoved thru at the same time. Runny nose, blood shot eye, cannot sit still for even a moment. No way in hell that I could lie down.  No reaction to light or sounds.
Trust me, I have had these monsters all my life. They are not migraines.... so please don't sound like the ten thousand doctors that gave me that same line.

Thank you Jaz! You have the same wish from me.
Jaz, I also agree with you that the body does seem to have issues recovering from major hits.

I want to clairify that this was the first time that I have ever tried a Trex shot. I only took one shot. Now I am gun-shy for trying a second shot.

I have always hated...hated shots too, but I injected myself eagerly with trex.  I would slam myself with that needle with no second thought when the ch was bad enough.  I used the smaller diabetic needles, that way I got six shots a day intead of two.

Trex always ramped me up hard for 5-8 minutes before the abort started.  02 can help through that period if you have it handy

I remember it doing the same thing to Mast in our hotel room in Iowa.  She shot up, and then ramped up hard.  So obviously, that's a pretty normal occurance.

15 minutes ramped up still seems better than a couple more hours of pain.

Might try some Zomig NS, they will keep the headaches at bay for up to 12 hours after using, where with trex it will be back withing an hour or so.

I hate needles as well.  I will chew off my right arm then give blood if I have the choice. But I will shot trex if it was that bad.  I never imagined that I could do the imitrex tip. But after fighting withthe insurance company to get the stat pens, I knew that I have to make them last and if 2m works as well (if honestly not better) then 6m I learned and did it.  I am to the point that I can do it anywhere and not even think twice about it.

I have had shadows that ramp to k4-k5 for hours (seemed like days on end) on end. I just know that it is going to hit and hit bad when the not a very nice person decided to. or between hits, the shadows would not stop so in the end I felt like it was one big headache.

Not on to your question.  Yes the HA will spike before it gets better before the trex will work.  To the point that I will come close to takeing an other shot (2m) to get it to stop because I an slamming my head into a wall.  But I know that it will help and just need to fight through it for a few more minutes.

I.

Lance,

Search the meds board. There is a howto where someone with multiple pens modified them to give 1/3 shots. If you only have 1 pen, ask and I bet someone has some extras.

Yup, same with me.  When in cycle, and I use the trex shot, there's a couple of minutes before It kicks in that death seems the only way out.  Then it works.  Aaaaah.

A full statdose made me dance even harder.
Cluster was still massive and I felt like my entire head and body was sunburned and "icky"

I only did a full one the initial trial with trex then I split the doses.
Relief was quicker and used less meds.

I then tried zyprexa when I was noin responsive to triptans and oxygen and found that that worked as quick as any triptan and did not have any of those nasty feelings afterward.

Good luck my brother!!!

Lance,

If you didn't have cardio reactions I would sure try the splitting advice above and O2 at the same time.

I had severe cardio reactions, heartbeat accelerating through the roof plus no relief. I had the same reactions with both maxalt and trex so the last one I tried was relpax. This time i was driven to my docs office during the hit and given the meds there. (my neuro's) idea. I regularly get hits that last long enough for me to get almost anywhere that a brave soul is willing to take me. YEAH YEAH I know I can't have clusters Tongue

The doc said the med caused a type of arrhythmia with something called pacs. A one in a million occurrence according to the experts buy I don't know exactly who those experts are.
So now it says in big red writing at my drugstore chain NO TRIPTANS. Of the migraine and cluster folks I have talked to I am the only one this has happened to so hey....give er another shot oops I mean try.

Needles huh ! so that's why you do graphics and not tats Grin

good luck bro...tim

Dragnlance, i meant no disrespect. If you took it that way then i'm sorry. I just could not image a 6 hour cluster attack. If that ever happened to me, I would probably be suicidal (if I couldn't abort it within a reasonable amount of time with Trex or something other)

The pain relief Trex brings comes with a price! Hope you find the right dosage to take to minimize side effects. BTW, someone just recently said Imitrex injections now come in 4mg doses. Maybe thats what you need.

Goodluck

Hey Mike,

We are cool. I am touchy about the "M" word because of all the fights I have had with doctors about it.
The length of my hits is one of the reasons none of the doctors believed me when I told them it was CH.

I didnt mean to jump on you about it, so I offer my apologies for my response.

Lance, Pegg gave me trex to abort  and I cant stand needles so I would put it off and prey that it would let up.  But the longer I waited the longer it took for the trex to kick in and it was alot worse the longer I waited.  If you hate needles as much as I do I can understand not using them but just from the shots Pegg has given me I have learned damn fast not to worrry about the needle the faster you take it the easier it makes things.  You will have to ask Pegg how much she gave me but it worked.  The side effects are not that bad  compared to what it got rid of.  Good luck and I hope this finds you PF.....Jody
