pain killers???

A little while back I really hurt my back. Well I have vicodine at home and I took some. Finished what I wanted to do at the time but the damage was done the headache I got just about put me to my knees for an hour. Is there any pain killers that can be taken to help really bad lower back pain that won't bring on an attack?? And why do some meds and pills set them off. Otherwise the meds Pegg has been trying has had some results and alot of PF days. Jody

I have after trying over 35 different meds and none working for ch I was put on methadone. I also had lower back surgery on L5/S1. It helped but it made me so tired. So I went on the duragesic fentanyl patch. It has kept me ch free and keeps the lower back pain away as long as I remember to take the patch every 3 days. If I forget to change the patch the back pain kicks in. If I forget even longer the ch kick back in.

Jody, I can take 1 pill, or maybe 1 and 1/2 pills and be ok. Granted, that isnt probably gonna help bad back pain, but it might make it a little more comfy.
When you took them, did you drink?
Maybe try a different kind of pill, it might be a little better for you.
I have also heard some people say that the pain patch is a pretty good one, I dont know what drug it is, its some sort of opiate.

I also am useing the 'patch'.....and thanks to a few people on here that helped me that had used them before and told me they weren't bad stuff........cuz I had been givein a script to them over a year ago and was AFRAID to try them. Been on pain meds and even after a few years under a good docs supervison with it all I would suddenly get sick as hell even on low doses. So my new doc prescribed the patch and I talked to a few on here.....and they were rite......it's a lifesaver to sum degree. I don't have ch so can't say much in that area but I feel more normal 'most' days to keep moveing. Which doc said was very important to do and get out of the depression chronic pain causes. I started on too high a dose and got SICKER THEN HELL but got thru it and got situated with lower dose. Doesn't make ya feel dopey or stupid or drugged......am glad I fineally found sumthin. If I wait too long to apply a new one I will have a bad day or do too much. But yeah.....it's NOT bad stuff. Ya need to of used other meds similar before tryin it tho doc said. I've not had onea them terrible tention migraines either since......came close but didn't get bad. Use it or loose it Pam

The drug CHTOM and I and Cootie were talking about is the patch. That is what fentanyl is an opiate.

No he wasn't drinking...when he's having an active period with the beast he knows better than to take a drink...he knows he'll pay heavy for it.
He's had alot of injuries over the years. Between the bike accident (he was in a halo cast for over 6 months 2 broken and two crushed CV vertiba), work injuries (general construction residential and commercial both), rear ended by a Speedy Delivery Truck, schrapnal in Desert Storm, I can't begin to count it all up.
Suffice it to say, I thought I had spinal issues...my docs have said I shouldn't be walking...his have said it's a miracle he's alive. (after the cycle accident)
Thanks for all the support guys...means alot to both of us.

Have you tried phenobarb? When I had my back surgery it worked better than any pain killer they could give me and with my headaches it doesn't hurt them (I take it in cafergot supposotories). It IS habit forming (according to the docs)but it does help back pain and seems less harmful than some of the other stuff.
Walking is also a good therapy (ok, it hurts at first, but it does help). I went thru three surgeries L-4-5. They just couldn't get it right till the third try.
You might ask your doc about this...

Vicodin has triggered attacks for me. Any Codine based pain meds will. Darvacet has worked for me. I had eye surgery last fall during a cycle and told the Dr. that I needed something without Codine.

What about a med called 'Dolgic/plus'.......it has butalbital, acetaminophen and caffeine.....suppose yu can just get 'Dolgic' without the plus of the other meds. Anyhow....never tried it but our other doc gave Brad samples of it for ha's and pain issues. I think he knew of course opiats were bad for ch patients. Guess the stuff is prescribed for migraines ect. But it'd be the same med or very similar type 'I do believe' as the phenobarbital mentiond. At least it is sumthin to check into and a med name to possibly ask about. The ones we got are 50 mg's. If morphine based meds don't aggitate ch there's also invenza caps......tried it for my back sum time ago but couldn't find the rite dose cuz it suddenly made me sick and I gave up on it. (but I am known for a sensitive system for that reaction).......could of tried it again but decided to try the patch. With all your injuries it mite work but then it isn't really for short term use I don't beleive. Suggestionable Pam

Jody: I take celebrex twice a day, 200 mg each, for the back pain. I have 2 herniated disks in my lower back and one in my neck. I am about 95% pain free (from my back) while on celebrex, and i've not had a problem triggering CH. Celebrex is not a pain killer, but it reduces the swelling and that relieves the pain.

Good advice. If you can't get and Rx for that, try Alieve.
Also, as mentioned before, opiates + CH + individuality==> rebounds.

Jody, Vicodin is a guaranteed trigger for a ch nightmare for me. I have had a few different drugs do that, morphine is one that will guarantee a ch for me. I have taken ultram/tramadol/ultracet for back pain and it's helped immensely with the back without causing any headaches.
I'm sure you are already seeing a multitude of docs for the various troubles that plague you, but have you seen a pain management specialist? They are usually anaesthesiologists and perhaps they can do a pain block for your back?
Just something to think about, but you are not alone with certain pain meds triggering attacks.

From the sounds of things, I have no where near the issues you have. I am sorry you have to deal with all that!
When it was available, I was taking Bextra, which helped the inflamation, and that in turn lowered the pain level, without being a trigger for me. I guess it could have been worse, now that I can read the problems related to that.
Other than that, I don't know of any that don't give me rebound headaches later.

I have a TENS machine too which is bloody brilliant but only on my spine and not in my hips which is where the majority of my pain is generated. Once again, I couldn't even consider using it for CH, I'd smash it and kill someone if they tried to slap that beastie on me when getting hit!
I hope all of our different experiences point the way to something that will help for you

The barbuitrol or whatever stuff is hard on yer stomach....I took Ultram for a while for back issues but needed somethin 24/7 with my crap so I moved on to the patch. Mite wanna try Ultram.......it's a synthetic narcotic so you can get refills and it's not as restricted or nothin. Pain gain Pam
