I saw a eppisode of O/C Choppers a while back and they were debating the comfort of ape hangers. I havv been riding for over 32 years and for the life of me, I cannot see the praticality of lowered street bike bars. I'd prefer to have 18"-20" rise for long haul riding. Just wondering what others think.

ps. Yes, the low end torque and verbrato of the exhaust on a winding mountain road on a warm fall sunny day is nirvana.

Never really was into them......and frankly they jus don't look comfortable with somea the highest ones I ever saw.....dunno how they can menuver around or able to make any quick moves to avoid an accident or whatever. Have seen some bikes pull into runs (more so the big city runs verses our more country roads local comfy tavern runs and parties) and geeze zo pete I don't know how they can ride long like that !! Hurts my arms just lookin at em but then I have alot of shoulder damage and I sit on back anyhow.....hee-hee. We are OLD school and always will be.....but new stuff is a fad that comes and goes and interesting but I just don't think alot of them people RIDE MUCH. We rode a hardtail for over 10 years......it does some damage if ya ride alot like we always did. (and still do ride alot but comfort is a bit more of an option these days) Wouldn't want sumones arms to fall asleep tryin to hang onto those apehangers on a long trip.......that could be trouble! Pam, apes are pretty old school. they used to make them out of grocery carts. I rode with mine everyday on back country roads never had handling issues. they actually helped my fucked up back. ride on jim

O h yeah I remember the chopper days.....just never thought much of that style handlebars.......and by old school I basically ment old style......stock style. I guess I can see where they mite cause you not to slouch when riden and help a sore back tho. Rotor cup damage mite be anouther issue.......but luckily I just sit on back and enjoy the ride, fresh air and company Pam

Yea, the E-Z rider apes are to much but 18-20 puts your arms/hands in a natural position and allows a more uprite position. I used to load a duffle bag with gear and tie it forward of the sissy bar. I could lean back on it for long rides. I used to shove a can or ravoli between the cylinders and ride for 30 min and cook diner before I would bed down for the night. Had a lot of fun back then.
You folks ever do the wet sweatshirt in real hot weather? Great in lower humidity. Instant A/C

Here is a question for the bikers in the group. My little sister (45 yrs. old) is on the process of getting her bike cert for the first time. She and her husband, who used to ride but hasn't in a long time, each just bought Harley 883's. While I am sure that Mike will be able to handle the 'little' Harley, I am afraid that it will be too much for my sister to handle. Am I wrong? I have to admit that I am a little afraid for her safety.

Steve, I would encourage her to ride her own, actually. My sis has permanent damage, due to an accident where she literally flew over the top of her husband when he hit the brakes to avoid an accident.
Of course, the flipping things scare me to death anyway..........

She should be able to handle the 883. They are pretty light and she should have no problem. You mentioned that she is getting her cert. If you mean she has or is taking the safety course, that is a good thing. Those who have not ridden in years should always take that course. it is well worth the money. He will enjoy the 883 for awhile, but will probably want a bigger Harley shortly. Enjoy the ride!

Yeah, they signed up for the safety course to be given around Memorial day in Lakehurst NJ. I think it's Lakehurst.

The riders course is an excellent way to learn and te course around these parts uses small bikes like honda rebels and stuff to teach manuvering and techniques and learn the ropes of road rideing. Our group STRONGLY supports it.........I have several girlfriends takeing it this spring. But I do know alot of girls talking about gettin there own bikes that I jus don't think are rideing material but 'what can I say' without pissen em off....I figure they will decide if rideing is for them after the course and goin out a few times. One girlfriend rode one summer and gave it up.......she was way too nervous and it was obvious which I think I would be too myself. I enjoy ridein on back and usually end up bein a backseat rider cuz Brad gets to lookin around at stuff and don't always see things. Too much traffic now days too and young people in cars that pay no attention to anything on the roads and drive too fast. I think ALL TEENS should have to take a drivers course before they can drive.....but oh well. I don't recommend poker runs for new riders but I think alot of girls (and sum guys too) think gettin a bike is way too cool and it's onea the first things they wanna do......but gettin in with a big crowd of bikes really needs expirience. Brad won't even let people ride next to him cuz he doesn't know WHAT there reactions are to stuff.....nor does he prefer to be too close to NEW riders. Old ways save lives Pam
I can sit on back and enjoy the scenery and have some beers.......I don't mind a bit. I'd be a basket case rider anyhow.

You don't even need your own bike for the beginner's course. I used to ride in shorts......but I got tooo much money in my tiger tatts and blackwork........anyway I got alot of slack for it. I would jus dread puttin on jeans when it was 100 degrees and 98 percent humidity. You (not the passenger) can actually park yer feet on a pair of highway pegs and let the air cool ya down goin up yer pant legs if ya have on some boot cut jeans. Brad wears the camo's or army green cotton pants all the time with all the pockets and LOVES doin that. I bout got my head ripped off once wearin a full face shield......looked up at sumthin and the wind went up inside and about lifted me off the bike ! No fun when bee's get turned loose either in there. Noticed when we were in Myrtle Beach for bike week half the people rode in shorts.......lots of guys with nothin on but shorts or tank top and shorts. Here guys get the shit teased outa em if they ride in shorts tho. Half to admit tho in summer it is WAY too hot for leathers. One hot flash and I would be leavein a sweaty trail Pam

They've got breathable synthetics now that are supposed to be as strong if not stronger than leather to wear while riding... Of course, dressing like a racer'll prolly get ya some teasin' too...

Never rode with shorts because of the crap kicked up by cars and trucks. Jenas and "T" shirt in summer mostly.
Did you ever ride into hail? I rode into a squall line once on the Northway in NY. Felt like I was hit with buckshot and damn near went deaf with the noise on the face sheild. Swarm of bees is interesting too! Luckily I had on leather that time.

It was a bee got me, too. We were on bikes slowly walking the sheep in the long paddock when one stung me inside my right elbow. Snatched my arm back and accidentally reefed on the throttle.
Bike reared up, sat me on my bum in the dirt, and it took us two hours to re-gather the woolies.
I wasn't a popular boy.

Yeah we hit hail on the memorial day run we go on every year out of a small town nearby......dam did that ever hurt !!! We all found a tiny tree to stop and gather under......man did that shit sting my face !! Rode home in torrential rain so bad one nite water filled up our boots and I had water pourin down my face about drowning me. Glad we was on the way home when it hit....but at nite on a fast paced narrow busy as hell road with alot of semi's it was scarey as hell. The bike slid a bit a few times to add to my enjoyment. Good thing I was already soaked so no one could tell I pissed my pants. (just jokeing) Stormy rider Pam
