Now this is a bass fisherman's dream! Not to mention about $4 million in endorsements.. By Ed Zieralski UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER 12:51 p.m. March 20, 2006 Mac Weakley photo Mike Winn shows off the 25-pound bass caught by Mac Weakley. SAN DIEGO – Mac Weakley of Carlsbad caught what could be the world-record largemouth bass early Monday at Dixon Lake in Escondido. The bass weighed 25 pounds, 1 ounce on a hand-held scale, which – if approved – would shatter the world record, the 22-pound, 4-ounce bass caught by George W. Perry at Montgomery Lake in Georgia in 1932. The catch will have to be approved by the International Game Fish Association. That may be a problem, however, because Weakley said he foul-hooked the fish – meaning the hook lodged below the dorsal fin on the fish's side, not in the fish's mouth. Weakley was fishing with his longtime friends Mike Winn and Jed Dickerson. Dickerson caught a 21-pound, 11-ounce bass at the same lake in 2003. Update Dixon Lake bass to get shot at world record ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -------- From today's Union-Tribune Record* bass caught at Dixon The men believe this is the same fish that Dickerson caught almost three years ago, and which was also caught by another fisherman as a 20-pounder in 2001. They said the fish has the same identifying black dot under its right gill plate. Weakley released the fish after taking pictures and videos of the weigh-in. But he did not take measurements of the fish, which also may be a problem when it comes to the game fish association approving it as a record catch. Jean

Sean, He knew it was a bass. He's a sight fisherman. This hawg was on a bed, and for those of us who bass fish know...you can really piss these hawgs off by continually throwing a bait in the bed. His bait was in the bed...the fish took a dive at it.....the dude snagged it. Snagging is illegal in California, I understand. Now, I have bass fished most of my life....and it's damn easy to accidently snag one of these when they're on a bed. They move so quick to bump that bait from the bed...with good timing...it would be easy to snag one. I bet the boat traffic on Lake Dixon has increased 100 fold...LOL. Damn...I thought my 8 3/4 lb'er was big....sheesh...it'd take almost 3 of mine to equal the weight of this monster. Take a kid fishin' Jean

Hey Jean I read somewhere that Weakley and two of his buddies offered some guy $4,000 and some rods for that spot where the fish was caught and the guy wouldn't give it up. They camped out so they could be first on the water the next day and that's when he caught it. I think that lake is only about 65 acres and they have a limit of jon boats they let go out daily. They say that's where the next world record will come from. Supposedly this guy has caught a lot of 10lb+ California bass but that fish is off the charts even if he did foul hook it. So when are we going to Dixon Lake?

Jim, It'd take longer to launch than it would for me to come pick you up. Thing is....this fish has spawned by now....she's back to about 20 lbs. Not that catching a 20 lb'er would be bad....but if we're gonna go....let's go for the gusto I'm leaving Sunday to go to Lake Fork for a week of nothin' but fishin. This is a great, big bass lake in Texas...up close to Dallas. Usually we go earlier than this....but last year, lots of the bass weren't even on the beds yet. We decided to go a couple weeks later this year....the temperature here in Texas is pushing 88 degrees...so...I know the fish at Fork have already spawned. If I catch another lunker like I did last year...I'll send you a pic. Love to you and Sue.... Jean
