Minor Dilemma here, advice?
« on: Apr 1st, 2006, 3:45pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

My tenants upstairs left their dog with the dogwalker and I can't get into the apartment because there is something wrong with the key. The dogwalker had to leave.  I can't let the dog into my place because unfortunatly I dont trust him. (He ripped a squirrel to shreads and he has major anxiety) So I have a baby here and a little dog that he could do some major damage too. I feel bad tho, I cant leave him outside because its raining. I can't get in touch with the tenant, so I left him in a hallway in the back of the house with some water and food. He barely fits in the hallway. What the hell do I do here? Should I lock him in one of my rooms? Uhhh. Some advice?

I would take it to a dog sitter and charge them for it, but that's just me.

It's probably best (for him, too) to leave him there, Beth. If he has anxiety, he might feel safer in a small space by himself, than in a strange apt with another dog. Can he be left alone there until someone comes back? I'd hate for someone to walk in and surprise him.

I agree with Nani - I'd leave him in that hallway and then raise proper hell with the tenants when they get back.

You should have a key that allows you into the place - there's something wrong if it won't fit the lock.

Hopefully your tenants will be back soon.  Nice dogwalker though - hope they don't hire him or her anytime soon.

Steph,

Sometimes you just can't fix other people's problems.  With a little one in the house, you have done the best you can.  Make sure you leave a note to let them know where the dog is.

I had exactly the same situation when I got left with someone's dog when Brid was only a couple of months old and I was already pregnant with Barney. It was a nasty yappy little dog who tried to bite me so no way was he getting near my baby. The dog spent the entire weekend shut in the porch or the utility room depending on what I was doing. I felt awful but not as awful as I would have felt if something had happend to my daughter.
Carole is right, you need to rip them a new one about the key too. It's not their fault the dogsitter was unreliable but you need to be able to gain emergency access in case of fire of flooding or whatever. This was an emergency too and you couldn't and they need to sort that out.

If you don't trust it, keep it out of contact with your family and pets.

Don't let your heart get the best of you - The dog will be fine in a small hallway.  Food and water there - it will be more than fine.

Just take it up with the tenant to make sure it doesn't happen again.

You're doing just fine leaving him there with some food and water. He'll get along okay. It's not cruel if you do so and look in on him now and then.

Yeah - I want to know what happened too.  How long were those people supposed to be gone?

Common Bethany, spill!  We want to know if the dog was OK, and if you laid it in to your tenants.  By the way, I would mention to them that should another emergency occur, such as another doggie problem or fire etc., that you are calling a locksmith who will rip out their lovely door , or, if necessary, their door and they will have to pay for it, unless you, as the landlord, have the correct key.

Sorry I didn't update this. So the tenant came home (finally) around 8pm. She brought me a bottle of wine and said she was sorry. Then she went and made a new key for us so that if it happens again we will be prepared. The dog was ok, I kept checking on him and seemed fine. It was a good thing I didn't bring him into my place cause he kept growling at the back door cause he could here my dog. I think he wanted to eat her or something. (shes only 3 pounds). Thanks for all the advice, everything worked out ok dokee. Sons a bitches.  Roll Eyes

Thanks for updating.  I wasn't worried about your little dog and family because you said you weren't going to let their dog in your place for anything (good choice).  I was worried about the dog in the hallway, and mad as hell at the owners of the poor thing!  Hope they were appropriately contrite, and that the bottle of wine was an EXPENSIVE one.
