Kim, Good luck in your last stretch before graduation!! Probably seems like forever away, but the time will really fly now!! I remember counting down the days until graduation, too - and now it seems like it was ages ago, but it's just coming up on one year ago!! I knew you could get through school - and now that the end is near, I hope you get to look back with a b ig sigh of relief that it's over!! hehe Hugz, Carrie

Kim, You're getting there! What have they had you done in school to help prepare for the NCLEX? I hope they've required practice questions or periodic NCLEX-like exams in each subject. THE most helpful study tool I used was the HESI tests. I think you can order a HESI test book at http://www.hesitest.com They also come with cd rom, I think...in order to do practice tests on the computer. I also used Saunders and one other company's NCLEX practice software. I liked the NCLEX 2000 (?) software, too. Focus on concepts more than content - I hope they've stressed that!! The hardest questions for me were the ones where they'd give you 4 patient scenarios, and you'd have to pick which one you need to assess first...or pick which one you can delegate to an aide, etc. For some reason, my thoughts didn't always jive with the answer they wanted. Also - therapeutic communication questions....total BS. Pick the answer that you'd never, EVER say to somebody unless you wanted them to hit you. I hate therapeutic communication.....!!! No seriously, they do have rationales, but I still think they're dumb. Never give somebody the answer when involved with therapeutic communication. Use things like, "How does that make you feel?" or "I see you're feeling frustrated, can you tell me more about that?" or ... you get the drill. Fake communication that just frustrates the living daylights out of the other person!! hahaha Everyone always focuses so much on patho, pharm, etc - but the NCLEX really focuses more on nursing concepts and theories - delegation, nursing diagnosis, care plans, therapeutic communication, 5 rights of medication administration, etc. Don't get me wrong - patho IS important, but not everything. Sometimes the downfall for a student is that they focus only on content and not concepts. Also - I hope they've also explained how the test works in that it is "smart" by tailoring to you. No two people will take the same test. If you get a question right, it gives you a harder question. If you get a question wrong, it gives you an easier one. The point is to get a majority right in all areas...and they need to be of an adequate difficulty level. Can't just get the easy ones right and then get hard ones wrong and have it drop back and then get more easy ones right. Need to show that you can answer questions in all areas of a variety of difficulty levels. That being said - the test is designed so that everyone who takes it basically only gets just over 50% of the questions right...no matter how many questions it gives! I find this to be very stressful. No matter how prepared you feel going into it, everyone I know walked out and felt like they failed it. That's because the test really only allows for a little over 50% correct - so you feel like you got almost half the test wrong!! It's okay - that's just the way it's designed. Very stressful, though - I remember!!! The important thing is to keep doing practice questions and try to do full-length tests every few days to keep your endurance and mind going. I focused on specific area related tests at other times. It helped me to just focus on one concept for an hour or two, and then the next day try a full length test - see where my weaknesses were, and then focus on that area the next day. Don't freak out if everyone you know only gets the minimum amount of questions when the test shuts off. I got almost 100 questions - I felt like my stomach was trying to digest nails with each question past 75 is it? Everyone I knew only had to do the minimum amount of questions. I seriously stressed out. But I passed!! I've heard of people failing with the minimum amount of questions and passing with the maximum amount - it's all based on individual test-taking strategies and concepts! There is no way to determine if you passed or failed based on how many questions you had. (You can kind of theorize that if it shuts off at the minimum, then you've either gotten the percentage right that you needed to pass, or else you really blew it - it will only shut off if it can tell at that point that you won't achieve a passing percentage no matter how many questions it gives you...that is, if you're not doing well) Also remember - it's okay if you don't pass on the first try. Not a big deal. I know plenty of excellent nurses who didn't pass on the first try, and they're doing just fine. Everyone takes tests a little differently. Don't over-study the day before, and get lots of sleep the night before. Wear comfortable clothing and eat breakfast! Good luck - let me know if you want any more of my hopefully somewhat helpful NCLEX study tips!! I know you'll do GREAT!!! Did you schedule yet or do you have to wait until graduation? I was one of the last to take it - took it at the end of July last year. Hugz, Carrie
