try their best to make you feel like a frug addict because you are on different meds and 40mgs of oxycontin 2 times a day for your cluster headaches ? boy i get hammered by some of the blood is thicker that water family? thanks all bill

It is up to YOU to educate yourself and then help your doctor plan your treatment. If you just sit down in front of your doctor and say "make me better" you are setting yourself up for a great deal of pain.

Maybe it could be time for some real meds for Clusters.May I suggest Oxygen.It's like gravy for the brain. Potter

Bill, please don't take this wrong but if you are taking oxy 2 times a day, You are a drug addict!! I am not saying that I and probably many others have never tried narcs but they don't work long term and coming off is a mother.
Please stick around and check out all the alternatives and good luck to ya man. oxy kills more people then it helps

checkout the meds and cluster specific boards and ask some questions, There is enough knowledge to help you find something that will help.

That's not a true statement!! Sheeeeeesh.....
He may be dependent on oxy, but it's prescribed to take twice a day - it's a long-acting pain killer. I used to take it twice a day after I had bilateral knee surgery, and I've never been an addict! He'd be an addict if he crushed it and snorted it or had a craving to go out and get more...constantly increasing his need and supply.
I take MS Contin 3 times a day... am I an addict, too?

Oxy, no matter how you use it quickly leads to a greater tolerance of the drug and hence the need for more. The point I was trying to make is I have never seen any reports that it's long term use has any benefit for clusterheads. And the biggest difference between Oxy and Ms is that oxy is very commonly abused and very commonly blamed for accidental overdose!
I drink and smoke and Yeah I am an addict because of it. My intention was not to drive Bill away from the board but to bring him to more parts of it! I am truly sorry to have offended you!
I am not a pharmaceutical expert like some on this board I am only stating what my neuros have told me.........

I probably overreacted. I'm not sitting here steaming, so don't worry. I guess I just get upset when people have big time stigmas about pain meds.
You're right in that long acting narcotics generally do nothing for clusterheads. When I first went on the MS Contin, it was for the constant migraine that I have. I told my doc I was still going to need my triptans because the MS Contin wasn't going to help clusters at all - he said, "I don't know if I agree with that. It may make a 10 headache a 9." I laughed. He's actually right though sort of! I still get the attacks and they still hurt and cause me to curse and sometimes cry and all the same as they always have - but maybe not QUITE as bad as before starting the MS.
I would never have gone on the MS for just CH, though. I needed to do it for the constant chronic pain I have from my other headache type and also for the AVN, back pain, etc. <sigh>
I agree he would be better off trying more conventional meds for CH rather than oxycontin, but I was more reacting to the "addict" statement. 
I used to work in the ER - I knew the going rate for oxy on the street based on what patients told me when they came in. haha It was a trip...no pun intended My brother and I both have needed to take oxy after orthopedic surgeries, but I only ever took it the first week or so before coming off it, and mostly I took it at night so I wouldn't have to wake up every 4 hours and take more percocet. When I was going on pain management this time around, my doctor told me that his choices were first MS Contin, then methadone, oxycontin, and lastly fentanyl. So far, the MS Contin has been a godsend for me, although not without its own side effects. I still take frova or amerge and use my O2 for CH though - so it's definitely no great help for CH even if it does take it down by a kip level...hehe

I was under the impression that there is 2 things bad about taking oxy (or stuff like it):
1. It does little for CH HAs.
2. Narcs have shown to increase the likely hood of going from episodic to chronic (I was told this by a Dr researching CH for me).
Either way, I'd try O2 and triptans and stay away from oxy. If you aren't an addict, you have to be VERY careful.
I do use ultracet (a very light pain med) when the nerve pain in my jaw acts up and it takes the edge off of that. However, I don't use it every day.

I'm not trying to be a narcotic advocate for CH, so don't think that. But I think regarding #2 that the studies show narcotics can send people into rebound headache, which is now called Medication Overuse Headache (MOH). I don't think there's any conclusive data that says it can turn an episodic CH'er into a chronic CH'er, but I could be wrong. Wouldn't be the first time...or second, third, 10th..you get the idea.
In my case, well...I already was chronic with CH, and have never had PF time from my constant migraine so worrying about becoming chronic and going into rebound weren't things that really apply to me! I tried the conventional treatment route for 5+ years without success (referring to headache treatment in general...have only had CH since 2003), so it took me a LONG time before I moved to pain management. I'm not sorry I did it - but as I've said before, it's not the best choice for everyone. Very individual...like everything else

The only time I've screamed for narcotics to deal with CH is when all abortives failed and I needed to breathe(demerol)...and when prednisone had me so wired I was up for three days and when I relaxed I would get hit...abortives failed ...Demerol...off to la la land,but that's just me.

Wild willy ..please consider some other alternatives. Maybe there is something to what they are saying....remember I dont know all of the other factors playing in your situation.
