OK. I get several kinds of migraine, most with nausea. The initial feeling is the same as onset of ch. Sometimes I feel like a balloon is being blown up behind my right eyebrow. The nausea, often a feeling liike a wasp stinging my scalp, aches and pains like in the feet and legs and hands that you would not expect, usually a light - day or night- and visual disturbance in the upper right quadrant of my vision in both eyes like zigzaggy or badly wavy. The pain is not as sharp as ch. Some of mine last 3 hours, 8 hours, 12 hours, and 3-5 days. I have had them simultaneously with ch. So, light or dark visual disturbances; wasp stinging your scalp, aches in extremities, nausea - all go with the migraine, but of course not for all. Good luck, Nani.

Thanks, Charlotte. Does it hurt on the whole side of your head? Is it a throbbing hurt, that's worse when you move your head?

Nani - mine usually make me feel like my head is going to explode. I have literally held on to the top of my head just to make sure it didn't go anywhere. I also cannot tolerate light, noise, or movement. If it is brought on by tension, my neck and shoulders will feel like they have been filled with rocks. Takes forever to work out the knots. God love ya, you don't need this too. Also, Charlotte, I know about them going on for days. Not my experience, but my daughter was on homebound her entire Senior year of High School because of them.

If it is migraine, you will be able to lay down. See if you can lay down, turn off the lights, and put a cold washrag over your eyes for a few minutes. Did you check to see if you have a fever?

Fever? No I haven't checked. Here's what's been happening: First, a little pressure behind my CH eye. Then waves of nausea. I'm literally gagging on nothing. UGH. Then a wave of throbbing, (kinda like head exploding) pressure. From the cluster "spot" on my neck all the way through that side of my head and out my eye. I'm not needing the dark, or to lay down (though I think I could), and moving my head just increases the pain and pressure. And they are lasting for hours. They aren't localized like what a heavy CH shadow would be for me. It's that whole side of my head. And yes, my neck and shoulders are heavy and sore, too.

Nani my dear, You know that I am blessed with a shit load of headaches It sounds part migraine and part tension. Tension headaches do not sound bad but they can be pretty crippling at times. If you feel like head is going to explode and the back of your neck hurts like hell it may be a tension/migraine combo. They are certainly different types of pain than CH. The only thing I can say about CH that is positive in comparison is that it will stop. The others can persist for hours and days. I hope ya never get a combo of 2, 3 or more HA types at once. I've had the Cluster/Migraine/Ice-pick/Tension/variant HA combo that really fucks ya up......EEK! Hugs and try a really frozen ice wrap around the skull and neck. Eric

| I can vouch for this!!! When I get tension HA's, I have the movement prob, a knot between my lower neck and shoulder blade, plus one at the base of my head (usually left side), and the nausea along with it. Although, the pain area is usually a band from one ear, over the top of the head, to the other ear. (not affecting the ears, just the skull). HA's SUCK!!!!

Does this fit?? The classical symptoms of meningitis are headache, neck stiffness and photophobia (the trio are called "meningism". Fever and chills are often present, along with myalgia. An altered state of consciousness or other neurological deficits may be present depending on the severity of the disease. In meningococcal meningitis or septicaemia, a petechial rash may appear. A lumbar puncture to obtain cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is usually indicated to determine the cause and direct appropriate treatment. Or this?? Signs and Symptoms The symptoms of meningitis vary and depend both on the age of the child and on which bacterium or virus is causing the infection. The symptoms of viral meningitis are usually milder than those of bacterial meningitis. However, symptoms of bacterial and viral cases can be similar, particularly in the early stages of the disease. This makes prompt, accurate identification of the infectious organism crucial to effective treatment and the patient's recovery. The first symptoms of meningitis may surface several days after a child has had a cold and runny nose, diarrhea and vomiting, or other signs of a bacterial or viral infection. Some of the more common symptoms of meningitis include fever, lethargy (decreased consciousness), or irritability. Older children may complain of a headache, photophobia (eye sensitivity to light), and a stiff neck, which is often noted by the doctor during a physical exam. Meningitis also can lead to skin rashes, although rashes caused by bacterial meningitis look different from those caused by viral meningitis. Seizures occasionally accompany meningitis as well. Newborns and infants with meningitis may lack the classical signs described above and simply be extremely irritable or lethargic. Normally, infants who are not feeling well will be comforted when their mothers pick them up. However, a baby who has meningitis may display something called paradoxical irritability - when picking up and rocking a child makes the child more distressed. This can be a sign of irritated meninges. Other symptoms of meningitis in infants can include: jaundice (a yellowish tint to the skin), a stiffness of the body and neck (neck rigidity), a mild fever, a lower-than-normal temperature, poor feeding, a weak suck, and a high-pitched cry. Parents may also notice bulging fontanelles on their baby's head. (Fontanelles are the soft spot at the top/front of the baby's skull, where the bones of the skull join and are still open at that age.) Rodger

Meningitis usually gives a bilateral headache, but still it's good to make sure you don't have a fever, etc... Sounds to me like tension triggering a migraine, but as you know, we're not docs so we can't say for sure... Migraine for me...hmmm...sits in my right eye most of the time, which is my cluster eye. Almost anything triggers it to get worse - light, loud sound, being too tired, etc. I don't always feel nausea with migraine, but sometimes I do. On the worst days, picking my head up off the pillow makes me feel like I'm going to stroke out and die. And when it's like that, I almost wish I would! Throbbing is hallmark, and most migraines are unilateral. For me, when its bad, every step I take feels like I'm setting off an explosion in my head. Triptans work for migraine, but for those longer lasting, harder to kill migraine types, taking the longer acting triptans like frova or amerge seems to do well for most peoople. Lots more I could say, but it would be book-length. So instead - gentle hugs and I hope you feel better Carrie

Gee I am the wierdo with all this ......my 'new' doc said there not migraines if trex doesn't work......NO it doesn't for me. So he says mine are tension related but very severe.......anyone else have tension ha's so bad muscle fibers explode like me......now that is TIGHT !!!! My neck burns too usually. I now have NO MED for them or that the doc wants me to take for them (well I have sum stashed cuz he has changed EVERYTHING so I stopped what I was doin 'that worked'). I have the pain patch on......how the hell long do they take to work anyhow ? But I start to feel shit comein on when I turn my neck a certain way alot too.....esp if we are out and I tense up more.....then I get two golf ball lumps base of my neck......neck muscles are so tight they show it and drawing in pain feeling in shoulders and down my back. I call it my BURNING CROSS. Then it moves up and down kinda spreadin out a bit........I get blood red eyes and red face......even one ear turns bright red. I found out punchin myself in the head didn't work on several occations. With Brad's shop worries rite now tension has been there every day.....feels like all the muscles are TIGHT at nite. No sleep when like that and lots of spasm's and vibrateing legs. I guess the muscle tightness is nerve damage....could you have some sort of old injuries comein back to haunt ya ? OK.....I think I am wearing out the migraine talk......can't beleive no one has WENT OFF yet about it. Sorry and thanks for listen and shoppin at Walmart Pam EDIT: to add HOPE you feel better in the head dept......

Nani, My Migraines cover one whole side of my head which is the cluster side, it changed when CH changed. The pain is nauseating, it throbs with my heart beat and at it's worse goes from 5 to 8 with every beat. I have no aura or any vision problems while attacked. Any sound, light or movement briefly jumps the pain to a 9, it feels like I was hit with a hammer. Driving with a migraine is pure hell, but manageable unlike a CH. Mine usually last 6 hours, well that is as long as I can stand it. Treatment is 4 ibuprofen, and 4 Tylenol, and to lay down in a quiet, dark room with my head flat. I can fall asleep with a migraine, but if i do laying down I will wake with a cluster. My migraines have gone away for now by staying away from MSG and taking Verapamil for CH. I won't even talk about the dreaded Cluster/Migraine which I used to get twice a year. Opus/Paul

Nani, have a family history (BIG time) of Migranes. I get them, the classic Migrane, but not often. Mine start with a vision distortion, like a pinpoint of bright white light, right in the middle of my vision, which slowly expands in jagged circle to the outer limits of my vision. No pain while this goes on. Then, once the vision distortion disappears, the HA starts. It's not one sided, it encompasses the whole upper head, with equal pain both sides. Lasts anywhere from one hr to three days. Always nausea when the headache has been around for at least two hours or more, sometimes even vomiting. Can't stand light, noise, go and lay down in complete darkness with cold compress on head. Any of this sounding like what you've experienced? Like they are saying, could be a combo of HA's, but which HA's. Don't know what to tell you, Hun. If it's migrane, extra strength Excedrin helps me, but does not turn it off. Commercials say use Imitrex, but have never tried it for a migrane. My suggestion would be, since this is new and different for you, check with your Doc. Hope you feel better soon. One type of HA is enough! Sandy

Nani, I guess I'm one of the lucky ones, in that my migraines have all but gone away in the last few years. I still get an aura--exactly the way Sandy_C describes it, any pain after the aura is minimal. What I remember most about migraines when I was getting them a lot, is the throbbing, nausea, and a total need to hold still in the dark. They also responded quite well to bio-feedback methods after I learned how to do it. This is not the case with my CH. Hope you get through this pain quickly. Hugs, Pat.
